I've already taken Artificial Intelligence, Database Management Systems, and Computer Graphics. I need one more. Right now I'm signed up for Game Development, but I'm kind of iffy about it...it could be fun, but I'm really nowhere near as into games as I used to be. I'd kind of like to take networking, but it doesn't fit with the other classes I've signed up for. What 4xx CSC courses have you found worthwhile?

CSC(MA) 416. Introduction to Combinatorics. It's really tough, but hard to fail. It's a really solid challenge and I learned a lot.

HCI (454 I think) is really easy....you could take that.

I'm actually signed up for Networks next semester....looking forward to it. Also signed up for game design, not really that into games much anymore but need to fill an elective

If you're into hardware design you could always take stuff from ECE catalog and get credit. I'd recommend Microprocessor Design (ECE 463).

Had 401(networking) with thuente and that was ok. 405(computer Security) was probably the most interesting. Also took 481 but it was the semester that they made changes where there wasn't a semester long group project using unreal tournament so it was kinda blah. Now I believe it's just a set-up course for the gaming senior design.

Did they get Sammy lined up to do 405 (security) this semester? Take that shit if you can. Will probably be the most useful class you will ever take as an undergraduate (maybe ever?). I use shit from his class like every other day at work.

Networking is a good idea too.

What are your interests in? What do you plan to do after graduation? My interest was in data analysis and security, ending up taking:

CSC401 (Networking)
CSC405 (Security)
CSC422 (Data Mining)
CSC431 (Adv. Data Structures)
CSC440 (Databases)

Although the School Tool is a bit outdated on TWW, read up on reviews of professors for various courses. CSC401 and CSC440 are notorious for being love/hate courses depending on instructor.

I don't know if 401 has changed since I took it (ok, 8 years ago), but when I took it, the material was VERY outdated.

But it does look like they've added some new classes that look really interesting (data mining, for example)

^, ^^, & ^^^

They have lots of awesome looking classes on the books, actually offering them in a given semester is a completely different story. I don't recall ever seeing Data Mining actually being offered. And there were a few others that were few and far between, like E-Commerce (which I did manage to take one semester).

An issue is that some 4xx courses only have one person who teaches it.

CSC413 E-Commerce, was taught by Dr. Wurman who left the university. Then his grad student taught it twice. It was last offered in fall 2007.

CSC456 Advanced Architecture was taught by Dr. Davis who retired.

CSC 485- Innovating in Technology, was taught by Dr. Tharp who is retiring.

Thus one would expect that the 4xx offerings will evolve as new faculty introduce courses in their area of specialty.
