I have a logo that I need to send to the guy who is going to cut my graphics that is in bitmap form. The guy cutting the vinyl says he needs a vector image.

How hard is that to convert?

It's completely dependent on the type and quality of the raster image.

In other words, it's way easier to convert a high resolution picture of a circle than a low resultion photograph

Very easy to convert, very difficult to convert well.

bitmap = pixels, vector = vectors.

think of it like drawing a picture using only dots, then asking how easy it is to automatically turn that into a line drawing.

wouldn't a circle be impossible?

(note: i don't know the particulars of vector imaging, so maybe there's a way of defining curves)

I think the key there is he said high resolution circle.... You can define something the approximately a circle... For example a regular octagon is more circular than a regular hexagon. You can define a shit load of sides and have a reasonably round object

bezier curves

and yes, i know it's not technically possible, but it'd be so close you wouldn't notice

import into illustrator and create a new layer. Trace over it in illustrator.

^^ and ^^^ it is actually possible. Illustrator and some other vector tools support raster to vector conversion, and using their simplification and smoothing tools you can actually get a circle out the other side of the process.

But its not automatic in any way shape or form.

If the guy is asking this question, I think you're assuming a bit much when you're telling him to use Illustrator.

Vector Magic is probably his most viable solution.
