In acc play he’s averaging 13.7 and 5.7 in 25 mins. I’m sorry he’s not scoring 2 more points and getting 2 more rebounds to reach your arbitrary 16/8 average.

Bates has been pretty much totally negated on the defensive end. With Huff playing outside of the paint, Bates shot blocking is a non factor.

generally i'm fine just assuming the coach is way smarter than me on stuff like this. but bates' defense was largely negated all night because huff was playing out around the 3 point line and able to drive - something bates wasn't really able to stop. in theory, yes, bates is the better defensive option. i'm not sure that was the case last night, though.

16/8 isn't arbitrary. If he averages that, he is in the conversation for best players in the ACC and with his size/talent maybe he is even a first round draft pick. As it is, he won't make third team and probably won't get drafted.

I'm not in the camp of him not giving a shit, though. I just think our guards can't get him the ball and waste his talent. I'd love to know why we can't seem to develop at least an average 3pt shot, though. He could be deadly with that. Usually good free throw shooters can shoot from outside, so it's strange.

16/8 is still arbitrary especially when it has no context. he's averaging 24 mins/game, 56% on FGs, and 84% FTs in acc play. i mean, shit, i wish he averaged 25/12. but he doesn't. and the fact that he doesn't average 16/8 or whatever other stat we want to pull out of the air does not really indicate his level of effort or anything else. hell, if he played 30 mins/game instead of 24 then there's a good chance he's hitting those benchmarks.
as you said, it's more of indictment on how we run our offense and our guards not feeding him more often. but free of any context (mins/game, shot attempts, efficiency, etc) it's just a made up benchmark that he's not reaching. i think he's got great potential and wish he was more of a focal point of the offense. but i'm not sure that's his fault. he's an efficient player. i wish he was getting even more opportunities.

he's averaging 13/5.6 in acc play. 16/8 is obviously better than 13/5.6. so in that sense, yes, it would definitely be better if he average 16/8. on a per 40 minute basis, he's having the best season of his career (21.4/9.9 in conference play). his rebounding% is the highest it's been in his career, his FT% is the highest of his career, and his FG% is right in line with the rest of his career.

Exactly.

Keatts has some weird ass sub patterns and the fact that the best player on the team is averaging less minutes than 4 other players is stunning.

The context of the 16 and 8 number and what makes it not arbitrary is that those numbers together put you in elite status in the conference and country. By not giving him 30 min a game, Keatts is basically torching any possible draft potential the kid had--not to mention probably not putting us in the best position to win.

Yeah I don’t really feel like arguing it anymore. But 16/8 are still completely arbitrary since we seem to agree if he got more minutes he’d reach those numbers. So he’s the exact same player he is now if he played 6 more minutes to get a couple more points and boards in a game. That doesn’t make him any worse or better.
