Quote :
"Former President Donald Trump went off on a bizarre tangent on Thursday where he denied enjoying “golden showers” and even suggested that former first lady Melania Trump would agree it’s not something he’d like.

“I’m not into golden showers,” Trump said unprompted in a private speech at the National Republican Senatorial Committee retreat, according to The Washington Post. “You know the great thing, our great first lady — ‘That one,’ she said, ‘I don’t believe that one.’”"

^^Try it again. I'm able to access more of the WP article today, and the quote is indeed there:

Right you are. I don't quite follow his statement about the First Lady. Is he saying she believes most of the other "rumors" about him, but that one is too far?

^On one hand: Cool

On the other hand: Goddamit, I (and I'm sure lots of others) am completely tired of hearing about investigations that never seem to lead to indictments/convictions. Sure, we've had some indictments of Stone, Manafort, and Flynn, for example, but they were all pardoned. I want to see some actual consequences here for a change. I know justice can move slow, particularly for the rich/privileged/powerful, but something needs to change when, evidently, there ain't a damn thing you can do about a corrupt president until he's been out of office for probably two years at a minimum (if that). With the Trump administration, evidently you can stop the wheels of justice if you simply ignore the subpoenas and so forth.

I'm just hoping that the wheels will at least move fast enough for there to be consequences before the 2024 presidential campaigns begin in earnest. I'm not at all confident that will be the case, however.

I forgot to also mention that I've also been worried that when all these investigations DO finally complete (assuming they do....), I kind of expect an announcement along the lines, "Yes, we know Trump is guilty, but a prosecution of Trump at this point will further divide this country so, in the interests of the nation, it's time to move on and put this behind us".

I'll acknowledge that prosecuting Trump WILL put the country through hell; I'm rather convinced that no matter how damning the evidence is, a substantial portion of the country will be pissed off at a prosecution of Trump, screaming that it's political persecution. There will quite possibly be terrorist attacks. But not prosecuting these crimes will simply give the OK for Trump (or future presidential candidates) to keep trying to steal the election until they get it right.

Slate states that Trump's administration intentionally removed lines from the CDC guidance, such as recommending face masks for everyone. Basically making this entire thing worse from the start.

So why did he cancel his planned press conference for today?

It was obviously a terrible thing to propose in the first place, but that's rarely stopped him before.

Trump teases a presidential run and dangles pardons for January 6 rioters at Texas rally

"If I run and if I win, we will treat those people from January 6 fairly. We will treat them fairly. And if it requires pardons, we will give them pardons. Because they are being treated so unfairly!"

I normally wouldn’t share the words directly but this seems clumsy even for trump. He’s admitting a whole bunch of crime here?? Not the first time but he’s not president anymore he doesn’t have that shield.

Thinking about cohens (trump lawyer) testimony I can only interpret this as a hit on pence. He wants trump loyalists to go after him, possibly with violence

Trump's accounting firm says they can't stand behind the past 10 years of records.

This is hilarious, but this also seems like the most tangible accountability trump has faced to date. All thanks to NY AG Letitia James

I wouldn't discount the possibility that, rather than having a third party siphon votes away to enable Trump, Trump instead becomes the head of that third party (though if the Republicans do split along Trump lines I'm sure there'll be a major battle over which are true Republicans and which is merely the "third party"). Anyway, in that case I think the creation of a third party nails the coffin for him instead of sealing the deal for him.

No, we're not there yet by a long shot, but I don't think it's difficult for that to happen over the next 2.5 years.

The analysis is easy. Trump pretty much didn’t want anything to do with NATO. Putin would have it now without a shot fired had Trump been re-elected. There is a reason he was so easy on Putin, cause he’d let Putin do whatever and scream “america first”

^^ yeah, Trump really put his oral talents on full display in Helsinki, didn't he?

I think blaming Biden or Trump for Putin's aggression is giving either of them a bit too much credit for the situation. I'm convinced that if Trump were still in office he would have allowed Putin to roll in swiftly and smoothly, and he would have framed it as some epically deranged "trade deal" where Americans somehow came out with an upper hand, or at the very least "everyone wins." On the other hand, Biden is attempting to look an actual political leader and relying on old-fashioned, steadfast 'diplomacy' and the backing of our lukewarm allies, which unfortunately is not fucking working very well.

In either case, this seems more about Putin's delusion/opportunism than two shitty US presidents who can't control a maniacal, imperialist bully. People are going to die, either from the cold when Russia decides to cut off the heat from its own natural gas lines, or they'll die from violence.

I can't think of a less ideal time to rally the troops and ship them off to war than at the tale end of a global pandemic that was highly politicized from day one, but maybe the US Military has better recruitment messaging than I realize.

Germany killing Nord 2 is certainly an inconvenience to Putin, so gg for them- buys everyone some time.

^^^I feel lucky/grateful that I’m able to remember most current events, keep them somewhat chronologically organized in my mind, and then build overall big picture trends or narratives on why the world is the way it is.

It’s obvious a decent chunk of this country has a problem with this.

Just think about how many events one needs to discard or (willfully) forget in order to run with a “Trump was tuff on Putin!!!” narrative.

^^^Fair point. In that case, I'm also quite lucky.

Oh, by the way, more of that famous "tough on Russia" rhetoric from the former POTUS:

Trump sides with Putin as Biden tries to stop a war

https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/23/politics/donald-trump-vladimir-putin-joe-biden/index.html

Quote :
""I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, 'This is genius.' Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine, of Ukraine, Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that's wonderful," Trump said in an interview on "The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show."

The ex-President added: "So Putin is now saying, 'It's independent,' a large section of Ukraine. I said, 'How smart is that?' And he's going to go in and be a peacekeeper. That's the strongest peace force," Trump said. "We could use that on our southern border. That's the strongest peace force I've ever seen. ... Here's a guy who's very savvy. ... I know him very well. Very, very well.""
