does anyone know how FF or RW frame by frame (slow motion)
cant seem to figure that out

on the old system you would hit pause and then use the arrows at the top to play frame by frame

I dont know why everyone has problems with FF and RW, mine works fine. I havent noticed hardly any difference from the speed or lag from the old software.

But anyways I still hate it, I would take the old one back any day.

it doesn't lag for me. the timing is just different. it jumps much farther back after you've been fast-forwarding. i'm sure i'll get used to some of those differences. but there are lots of other flaws that are less forgivable.

it seems to randomly leave off the last few minutes of shows occasionally along with needing to be reset more frequently than I think would be normal

when you rewind, you have to rewind a good amount PAST what you want to see because it will start like 5 seconds after you stop.

Looks like my time is near. I just got the following e-mail from TWC . . .

Quote :
"At Time Warner Cable, we’re making changes to deliver a more personalized Digital Cable experience, one that’s as unique as you are. That’s the power of you .

The first of many exciting innovations to Digital Cable is headed your way. With the Time Warner Cable Navigator™, your new onscreen guide, you will soon have a new way to discover all that Digital Cable has to offer. The future of Digital Cable is coming. And this is the first step.

You are scheduled to receive Navigator on one or more boxes in your home within the next week. The transition to the new Navigator on-screen guide will take about two months to complete, therefore if you have multiple cable boxes in your home, you may not see the new guide appear on all boxes at the same time. We will give you a courtesy call the day before you are scheduled to receive the new on-screen guide for each box in your home. You are not required to be at home during the time the software upgrade takes place.

The new Navigator makes virtually anything you want to find accessible via the “A,” “B,” or “C” buttons. (You will still be able to access the Interactive Guide simply by pressing the “Guide” button on your remote.)

Here’s how your new user-friendly Digital Cable navigation tools will work:

is for Access Menu.

Press “A” on your remote for direct access to what’s on now, Favorite Channels, all On Demand programming and much more. Use the genre categories along the bottom of the screen to view shows that are playing right now in News & Weather, Sports, Kids programming, HDTV and more.

Press to Find Programming.

The Navigator now stores the titles of upcoming shows for up to 7 days. So, whether it’s on now or a week from now, just press “B” and you can search programming by category, title or rating.

is your Back Button.

“C” on your remote returns you to most previous menus.

Additionally, we’re increasing Parental Control functionality, so you can more easily protect your children from programming you don’t want them exposed to. PIN-protected controls let you block by title, channel, rating – and now even by content-advisory labels, such as “Violence” or “Coarse Language.”

Want to see the new features in action? Answers On Demand offers easy-to-follow demonstrations of some of your new Digital Cable functions. Tune to Channel 500 to play these brief instructional videos.

DVR and Saved Settings
If you currently have a DVR, it is likely your saved recordings will transfer to the new Navigator, however there is a slight risk that saved programming may be lost during the upgrade. The success rate increases if your DVR is not full. Therefore, we suggest you delete unnecessary recordings to minimize this risk. Please note that if you have a third party hard drive connected to your DVR (connected to the SATA port), please make sure it is connected to the DVR at all times so your saved recordings will be transferred to the new guide platform. When Navigator is available on your Digital box, it is very important that you review all of your personalized settings as soon as possible after the change. These settings include:
• DVR Schedule (if applicable)- check to be sure the programs you want to be recorded are scheduled, particularly your series recordings.
• Parental Control- make sure all channel, rating or other parental control blocks are accurate.
• Favorite Channels- be sure your favorite channels are in place.
• HD Settings (if applicable)- be sure your aspect ratio and HD output format is set correctly.

Setting the Power On Channel
Please note that when the conversion to the new Navigator guide takes place, your current Power On Channel will not transfer to the new platform and will automatically be set to News 14 Carolina. To change the Power On Channel on your Digital box, please follow these simple instructions:
1) Press the “Settings” button on your remote control.
2) Use the right arrow to scroll to “Display.” Press “Select” on your remote control.
3) Use the up arrow to scroll to “Power On Channel.”
4) Once you’ve chosen your new Power On Channel, press “Select” to confirm and “Exit” to leave the screen.

At Time Warner Cable, we’re committed to delivering cutting-edge technology to your home that you can’t get elsewhere. Navigator is a platform that will allow us to offer other innovations such as: additional HD channels, Caller ID on your TV screen for Digital Phone customers, classic fun games, Enhanced TV, voting on some of your favorite TV shows, instant news, weather, daily horoscopes and fantasy sports. We hope you are not inconvenienced by this transition and hope you enjoy the new Navigator on-screen guide. We value and appreciate having you as a Time Warner Cable customer. Visit twcnc.com/navigator if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Time Warner Cable "

Wow, I can't agree more that this new guide is an absolute piece of shit. I'll do a quick pros/cons list to add to the fodder:

Pros:
- When switching between two channels with the 'Last Channel' button, the new Navigator will keep the timeshift stream going for both channels so you don't lose the ability to rewind if you brainfart and change the channel.
- The DVR menu shows the capacity filled for the DVR storage.
- When playing back a recorded show while it's still recording, the old DVR software would get buggy and stop playback when the show ended and recording stopped, usually just displaying a grey screen until you restarted the recording for the DVR menu. This does not seem to be the case with the new software, minor bug but I'll give a little credit to it for this fix.
- You can sort your recorded shows by title or date

Cons:
- Cannot seek +/- 15 mins with the arrow keys during a recording.
- Rewind/fastforward controls are totally fucked now, while rewinding on the old software it would playback from the exact frame you hit play on, and fastforward was at least somewhat predictable as you could become skilled at nailing a show perfect coming back from commercial at 4x FF, now it's a total crapshoot without any precision, I can't imagine why they fucked this up, can you???
- Hitting the Favorite button while in the guide changes the channel instead of going to the next Favorite on the guide, you can offset this by having the guide sort channel by Favorite first, still fucking sucks as you could at least see the other channels as you scanned the guide by using the Favorite button previously.
- Show descriptions are inconsistent and lacking in general.
- Max FF/RW speed is 3x instead of 4x.
- Cannot sort shows in the guide with the C button, huge step backwards.
- I'm sure there are a number of others that are escaping me at the moment.

It's like they didn't even bother to put this piece of shit in front of a capable testing group to identify missing features to implement, and bugs to fix from the old software. I guess it's a pretty obvious answer however, they clearly care more about cutting costs and their shareholders as opposed to the satisfaction of their customers. I think this is going to be the kick in the ass I needed to cancel cable and get a damn QAM decoder card and build my own DVR, or switch to DTV/Dish Network at the very least.

I have a whole list of complaints, but I can't think of them all. Primarily, I hate that:

- I can't keep recorded shows longer.
- I can't create manual recordings.

Perhaps we should list pros and cons of other DVR providers. I would like to know who doesn't suck.

1 good thing I noticed:

If two shows are back to back on the same channel, and you have one show set to run over, it doesn't completely flip out, instead it uses the second tuner to record the second show from its beginning.

little, annoying bad things:

- Bringing up the recorded shows list doesn't remember which item you had last selected, so watching sequential recordings requires the extra step of scrolling up.

- Going from the program guide to the search UI doesn't automatically put the show selected in the program guide as the default show you're searching for. So if you miss a show, scroll back to it in the programming guide, and want to see the next time it comes on, it requires the significantly more painful extra steps of re-entering the program's name.

- Going from the recorded shows list to the Series Manager doesn't automatically select the series in the series manager, you have to hunt around for it.

The one I have jumps back way to far. I think it kicks back like 30 seconds.. which during a 2 minute commercial is fucking annoying.

This thing is really shit, from the program info(which just cuts off mid sentence) to the record issues, what a hunk of crap. I mean, how do you not think of all this while making the program? I understand them wanting their own programing on the boxes, good for them. So just take exactly what existed and duplicate it. I am sick of companies cutting corners in the short term(and providing customers with crap) and then "patching" things for long term fixes. You know people are complaining and inevitably they'll fix these things, and by that time it would have just been easier to do it right in the first place.

Have you guys noticed anything weird w/ the aspect ratios?

Ever since the navigator upgrade, sometimes it sends me stretched 4:3 stuff as 16:9. TNTHD has done it a few times now. there's no way to fix it... its a real 16:9 1080i signal that contains some stretched out 4:3 shit. gawd.

I have had problems with my signal at times. I finally decided to call them when an entire episode of the office was unwatchable and the following Sunday almost all of the channels were freezing. They came out to look at it and of course it was fine then. Now they are going to send someone else out and possibly put a booster on it.

The way I got slow motion on the old system was to hit PLAY twice. The arrow would then show a straight line after it. I haven't tried it on the new system yet--yes, I just got hit last night with it.

BTW, I called TWC yesterday to complain--we got a "warning" call that the changeover would happen the next day. Well, the supervisor (from the "Executive Resolution Team") told me that the FCC made them change their system. Is this legit?

If you hold down the fast forward button it skips 15 minutes forward, although much slower then the old system. Just found this out (although someone mentioned it last page) so just wanted to put it on this page.

Yes, my TV use to auto adjust depending on HD or regular, now it just gets stuck wide for the most part. Everything is stretched.

NOT a Pro. Before, if you had something you were watching, but wanted to see what else was on, you could leave program A in the PIP, whether it be on screen or not, and surf to your hearts content, then switch PIP and have your full buffer of program A. Now, you have to continually go back to program A each time you want to change channels, because it continually pushes the last channel to the PIP tuner. The only way around this is to keep the PIP on screen, but just because I have PIP doesnt mean I want to use it that way.

slow motion and frame by frame are two different features. i know how to watch in "slow mo" but sometimes prefer to watch frame by frame.

on the old navigator you could use the left/right arrows at the top of the remote under the guide & info buttons for playing frame by frame either forward or reverse while in pause.

cant figure it out on the new system.

Love how they wanted me to drive over to their office in Cary to drop off the box when I canceled for summer. I told him If they dont come pick it up, I am punting that bitch off the top of College Inn's parking deck (I realize this would probably break my foot)

...I actually didn't say that because I dont have the cahone's but they did come get the box in a couple days.

Or how about how now when you are caught up and watching live but forget and try to fast foward, it does nothing? With the old system the timeline would pop up and you'd be able to see you were live. With the new one nothing happens, no timeline, no FF icon, so last night I clicked my button 15 times looking like an adiot before I realized I was caught up.

ok here's one for you guys- someone verify if this oddity occurs to you:

if i turn my tv off while leaving the box on, i will lose my passive recording buffer on the dvr when i turn the tv back on. i'm also greeted by a little message about unsupported format- press A to continue. everything works fine, but the previous hour of recording is gone. i think it has something to do with the box getting cofused by my tv's HDMI connection.

this blows, especially if i wanted to see the prior events of whatever it is i turned the tv onto

i dont think mine does that, i'm pretty sure i can still go back,

but another complaint: the schedule doesn't switch until the hour of half hour exactly, i really don't need to see whats on at 3:00 at 3:29, the old one would switch a little early, and to go along with that there is no longer the "View this channel now" option so when i am looking through the 330 shows at 329, i have move back to 300 to actually view the channel

this exact thing happens to me. what tv do you have?

Also, i'm bothered by the fact that I can no longer do stretch on 4:3 channels and then have it automatically switch to normal for 16:9 feeds. Now i'm force to have black bars (at least they're no longer grey) on the side of my shows when i watch them on 4:3.
