Was going to post about how much I love the wingsuit video in the OP. Every time I see it I love it.
THEN I SAW THE BRIDGE VIDEO.
FUCKING HORRIFYING.
Though part of me still wanted to see a liveleak-esque uncensored footage. 1/19/2012 11:20:04 PM |

Lodi and Byron now, but haven't jumped much out here. I started at CSS and was jumping at Raeford when I was still in NC.

Yeah. My last wing suit trip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acIVQxm8cRM I was back there this summer but to get married so I was forbade from jumping. Verdict is still out for what is more terrifying: BASE or marriage?
^
Who Jeremy? The most recent Eiger incident was a guy who had a legitimate gear issue involving a canopy blowing up on deployment (rare and in this case it was a newer model made with different material). I've always had the philosophy that if it hasn't been out for 5 years you're a test jumper. Skydiving and even more so BASE have seriously limited funds to do long running R&D. Most people are willing to be guinea pigs for the hot new stuff, which has always surprised me.

so can people do loops/somersaults in these suits?
I mean I know it won't be a high arching loopty-loop but at least like a stall + flipover?

It's super easy to do front flips and barrel rolls and a bit harder to do a back flip. The leg wing can get unwieldy. I've seen videos of people going up relative to a stationary person on the ground, but doing a loop without power is hard.

The true lesson is don't push it. Out of 22 BASE fatalities last year, 20 were in a wing suit. Flying aggressive terrain and shooting small gaps in rock will catch up with you. I've got thousands of skydives and hundreds of BASE jumps, and I'm still alive because I'm a pussy--I climb down a lot and don't try to do flips off low shit or fly threw trees and rocks at 120 miles an hour.

^ He did basically a barrel roll low to the ground, like in the above video I posted above*, and hit a tree then came to rest in the couloir. He was responsive when emergency personal got to him. Amazing he wasn't instantly killed.
All of my friends are dead. It took me ten years to know ten dead BASE jumpers--a feat my wife accomplished after being around it for just one year.
Take up heroin it's safer.
*Also, guy from video above is learning to walk again after a malfunction at the same location as the current incident. ** Also, Uli from the 2 meters wide video died in the past week.

Jeb Corliss (who made Grinding the Crack) is the only high profile wingsuit/BASE jumper that is still alive, and he had a pretty horrific accident that damn near took his leg off a couple years back. It looks awesome but is dangerous as fuck. 8/25/2016 6:58:40 AM |

Fifteen years ago people dreamed of being able to fly through terrain in wingsuits, but no one had the balls to try it. Finally some people started pushing the limits and dying. Equipment got better, techniques were developed, and more performant and people pushed it harder. Before they were jumping overhanging cliffs with 10 second rock drops--now it's 300 ft where a tumble on exit is certain death. It's clear there is an upper limit on whats repeatedly possible and I think that's been found. Five years ago the limits weren't known, but it seems pretty solid now that doing some of these jumps every day all summer is not repeatable over a small span of years.
They may have been dumb, but a lot of them taught everyone else valuable lessons on what not to do. They at least had skin in the game and people will ultimately be safer and learn from their mistakes. No one gets into this stuff because they are risk averse.8/25/2016 2:06:51 PM |
