How was what I said a bad thing? Dixon isn't a shithole or anything, but yeah I can totally see why you think Raleigh is a great place to live if that's where you were. I've been to Davis a bunch of times and it's a really nice college town, actually
and fwiw i live in Oakland, not the city, so I'm sure people will chime in about how omfghetto!1 it is...

That argument is so tired. There are plenty of cities with a lot going on that aren't going to cost you $texas to live there. Only way I could see myself making it out to California is if I suddenly found myself making serious bank.
^ Because it just perpetuates that stupid stereotype of OMG IF YOU DON'T LIFE IN THE BAY AREA YOU MIGHT AS WELL DIE! And it also assumes that one never goes to San Fran if they don't live in it spending 20 bajillion dollars on rent. You can just as easily get to Yosemite or Napa or anywhere else worthwhile and not be directly in the Bay Area.

I live 8 miles across the bridge and people say the same thing about it being pointless to live anywhere but SF. But I don't give a shit because I can afford to live in a house and have a car.
The Bay Area IS nicer than a lot of parts of California (def nicer than most parts of NC), so I don't really know why you're trying to argue with me

Bay Area was far and away the nicest and most diverse (in terms of activities) area of the US ive ever lived/been to. Not even close.

The bar drinks are HALF what I pay for drinks in downtown Raleigh. We were paying $8 for 2 double gin and tonics last night. THINK OF THE MONEY YOU SAVE IF YOU DRINK TOO MUCH. 8/11/2011 1:22:36 PM |

My parents retired to Florida about 10 years ago. Some of my step family lives there still and I have a condo there as does my step mom. I'm only there about 2 days flanking Christmas, but basically drink heavily at the house with my dad and get awkward stares from my step mom's religious right family. It works out well

you can get from santa monica to skiing in like 30-45 minutes depending on traffic and the shitty los angeles skiing is still 10x better than anything on the east coast.

What? "besides subrubrs and downtown" What else is there besides the beach? The trolly goes to mission valley/chargers, FRIGGIN MEXICO BORDER, all through downtown (one of the most active bar dense downtowns in the country), and all of the major residential suburbs. It runs quickly and is clean/quite nice unlike most subway systems. I dont see what more you want. If it went to the beach it would be perfect but its damn near. I don't see how anyone could consider it a joke. Maybe you are just saying that because it didn't hit the place you happened to live.
Chicago and NYC have single systems. In SF its a combination of like 5 different systems that you have to use. NYC subway is easy and hits all the spots just gets a low grade for comfort and nice/neatness.

no you can't. property values work on a supply demand basis.

The funny thing is, once you've lived in california, the only places in the raleigh or charlotte area that seem livable end up costing the same as living in california but of course you end up with a significantly lower paying job in nc.

Quote : | " the traffic is awful" |
traffic is worse in the southern cities because you rely more on a car. Unless you live in LA and take 10 or 405 every morning traffic isn't bad in cali. Traffic is nonexistant in San Diego. It was crazy. I used to drive from south of the city through downtown to north of the city and the 5 would always be empty at rush hour. Traffic is only bad when it rains because people freak out and think they will melt.
Meanwhile 40 between chapel hill and raleigh is basically comparable to the worst of LA traffic.

It's cute that you took it while you were being a tourist and it might have happened to run on time, or make it easy to loop around downtown but San Diego's freeway system makes getting around incredibly easy. It doesn't even go to the airport for fuck's sake. Nobody who actually lives in SD- besides poor people and tourists-use it for anything other than going to Qualcom on game day. Nobody in their right mind would take an hour long trolley ride to TJ when it's a 15 minute drive... When did you live in San Diego again??
Quote : | "In SF its a combination of like 5 different systems that you have to use" |
Actually there's only two systems- BART and MUNI. BART is the commuter train that links up with the East Bay, and MUNI is the subway/bus/cable car that is all part of one system. The system sucks because it's unreliable, but there's nothing inherently confusing about it unless you don't know how to read a map.
Quote : | "Traffic is nonexistant in San Diego" |
WTF are you talking about. The 15, 8, and 805 are just as bad as anywhere else during rush hour. Again, it's cute that you were a tourist during an off week when nobody was around, but you don't know what you're talking about.
Quote : | "Unless you live in LA and take 10 or 405 every morning traffic isn't bad in cali." |
Bull fucking shit. Traffic is awful in San Jose, the Bay Area, and Sacramento too. You've obviously never sat on the Bay Bridge for 2 hours because a car broke down, or taken 101, or tried coming back from Tahoe on 80 or 50 during a busy weekend. California is great for a lot of reasons, but traffic is a part of life in every urban environment. Again, when did you live here??

I lived there for 8 months and drove from PB to SE SD for 5 of those months and took the trolly from downtown for 3 of those months. Many systems don't go to airports because of taxi lobby. NYC subway doesn't even go to LGA. I guess thats a joke too.
I can tell you that you are wrong. Either you took it when it was brand new or YOU are just the cute tourist that went in an off week because you are dead wrong. Plenty of young professionals and business persons ride the trolley. You can connect with a bus at old town to get to the beaches pretty quickly. It doesn't go to the rich areas so maybe you are rich then I could see why you don't like it. It will never go to La Jolla.

Thats four different things really. By system, I mean you have to get off and ride a different type of vehicle.

I guess I was too busy riding the AMAZING trolley to get stuck in traffic way outside teh city. I did go to La Jolla and LA a lot and hit traffic on extreme north 5 and 805. I NEVER saw traffic on the mlk? or 5 near downtown or the 8 between 805 and the beach. I guess I just wasn't out in the suburbs enough but in the main parts of the city there was never traffic. I'm sure you have spent several months riding all over every part of the city taking multiple routes from multiple locations to give an expert analysis on sd traffic. .
None of the "traffic" even came close to comparing to raleigh, charlotte, atlanta, nashville, or south florida.

never lived there so you're probably right but i will say if you are commuting across the bay bridge or driving in sf at all then you just aren't doing it right.8/12/2011 7:01:49 AM |

I don't see what makes it so much better than most other rock stations. I guess they occasionally break new bands before the rest of the country, but they still have a relatively small, mostly generic playlist at any given time. For a few months last year, you couldn't go 20 minutes without them playing Foo Fighters, Muse or Phoenix. Wore me the hell out for all three bands.9/3/2011 4:01:20 AM |
