If it was just the lack of a PG that was our only problem, I wouldn't have an issue with Sidney. But this team doesn't rebound, hustle, defend, or show any passion at all. And the coach consistantly rewards this type of play with more playing time.
I'll post this quote from Sidney after the BC game again
Quote : | "I told the guys from this point on, I’m playing guys that are going to defend. If you can’t defend, I’m going to take you out of the game. I don’t care if it’s two minutes into the game I’m going to take you out. I need somebody that’s going to get stops for us." |
It baffles me why it took him 75% of a season of crappy basketball to finally realize how to motivate 18 year olds to play good basketball.2/19/2008 10:04:23 AM |

Again...there aren't but about two or three idiots that are really calling for Sidney's head right now.
Most of us are just saying that there is cause for concern...and you have to be blind not to see that. I think the main concern is Sidney's coaching ability. Throughout his career, there has been about a 2 to 3 week stretch where he has given us evidence that he is a good coach (ACC tourney to NIT run).
So you can throw all the excuses out there...he doesn't have players to run his system, our starting point guard is out, the back-ups suck, Costner is lazy...etc. But what I'm worried about is his coaching. Like when he decided to keep Javi on Rice and never put Fells on him. Or continuing to play Costner huge minutes when our team consistently gets outplayed when he's out there. Or not giving Tracy Smith any minutes after he was our best player in the Clemson game....etc.
He definitely needs his time. But for a guy who has little-to-no history of good head coaching experience...it is definitely a cause for concern. 2/19/2008 10:42:40 AM |

No one was expecting a NC. But this team has talent. More talent than most of the teams that are beating us. So far Sidney has done a bad job of coaching this team.
If we win 3 of the remaining 5 and a couple ACCT games, then I'll lay off. But the way we're playing we might be able to beat FSU at home and that's it.
I just don't think that needing late season heroics just to make the NIT 2 seasons in a row is acceptable for a coach at NCSU with the talet we have. 2/19/2008 10:43:09 AM |

If this mattered, then the New York Knicks under Isaiah Thomas would be undefeated in the NBA right now. And his coaching in the NBA is nothing you want to use as his defense.

For whatever reason, not many players redshirt in basketball.
That's not just Sidney doing that. Unless you're absolutely terrible or hurt, no other coach would have redshirted him either. (Using history as a basis. Hell, we didn't redshirt Cedric Simmons...I don't think?...and he was much more raw than Smith. He also probably played less as a Frosh)
Quote : | "all im saying is, is that it is still too early for everyone to be jumping off bridges" |
Agreed. I have no idea how good or bad Lowe will be, but I'm gonna wait until about year 4 until I see what kind of coach we have. All I know, is that when we had an experienced veteran return last year we went on a tear and could hang with anyone. He did a helluva coaching job with the right pieces.
A lot of coaches can win with other peoples very very good players...especially in football (See: John Bunting, Barry Switzer with the Cowboys, Jeff Jadgodzinski) and a lot of coaches can't win even with very very good players from other systems (See: Mike Kryzooski, Billy Gillispie).
Let him get his players...then judge him.
By the logic many of you are using, Billy Gillispie should be fired at Kentucky (Or at least 'the jury is out on him'). He's got loads of talent and they are underachieving incredibly. He's one of the top 5-8 coaches in the country...easily.

Yeah you can. If you can't see that Javi has a low ceiling, then you are just blind. I just hope that he can play to the best of his ability, and either one of our recruits comes in and is a great point guard or Degand comes back next year and plays well. I support Javi in doing the best he can and will always cheer for him, but we won't succeed in the ACC with him as our starting point guard.2/19/2008 2:02:00 PM |

I think he might have a low ceiling but it's impossible to tell right now. He's not the most athletic player but good enough and he seems like a smart player, just inexperienced. The easiest thing to fix is not having a lot of experience. The most important things for a point guard to have are composure and on-court intelligence. It's not really easy to judge how well he'll do at these right now. 2/19/2008 2:06:29 PM |

low ceiling including staying hopefully healthy and being a productive backup thats getting tonnnnnns of experience while Farnold is out?
its hard to land good PGs and seeing how UNC's year has gone and ours last yaer, one thing you can never have too much of is experience and depth at the point
while he may not ever be the BEST PG on this team he will certainly be a beneficial backup
and yea half these guys passed on us, we didnt pass on them.
and for the people/coaches that come in without their own players and do well see ROY WILLIAMS for that example 2/19/2008 2:06:43 PM |

If anyone's arguing that Lowe is a better coach than Roy at this point, they're a fool. I think Sidney will be a good recruiter and he'll get better at the other stuff as time goes on. 2/19/2008 2:08:42 PM |

did anyone say that he was a better coach at this point? no we are just saying to give the guy some time to get HIS players in HIS style in here
these guys were recruited to pass and shoot from the perimeter not to chase on D or break you down to the basket, you have to realize that. its gonna take awhile to get away from the Herb days because our guys are still relatively young.
heres a great quote from Sid on Javi tho
Quote : | "I don't think Javy Gonzalez is the issue. I know he's not the issue. Javy is not the problem." |
he went on to say that losing Farnold was huge because he ran a break you down offense and could chase on D.
You have to be patient, the players we have arent what Sidney wants to bring in quite yet and play his style, just give it time.2/19/2008 2:12:32 PM |

No Sid's not blind. That's why Javi was a back-up to begin the year. Sid knew we needed a point guard to back up Degand, so he used a late scholly on Javi. Sid would be blind if he started Javi ahead of a healthy Degand.2/19/2008 2:52:36 PM |

First...I didn't say the backup...I said a backup. Newsflash...third string is a backup.
And 2nd...get your shit straight. Johnson was listed as a fucking shooting guard coming out of high school and Tennessee (I have no idea why, the fucker can't shoot for shit...along with Javi).
I'm pretty sure Sidney knew he had Degand coming in as the starter and a shaky backup in Johnson ...so he recruited another backup in Javi. As a college coach you don't (and can't) sign a bunch of top point guards in the same class. You go after who you think will be your starter, then you go after other guys as back-ups or role players...or possible replacements just in case your first guy doesn't work out.
That's what Javi was. Sidney needed a backup or an insurance policy for Degand...and that's what Javi was. I doubt, at any time, that Towe, Lowe, Harris, or Strickland looked at Javi and said, "Hey...that guy right there is going to be our next All-ACC/Chris Corchiani/Lowe/Towe-type point guard." At the most they probably thought he could be a Justin Gainey type (although Javi should pray that he could hold Gainey's jockstrap).
But maybe, just maybe...they thought he could a point guard like Isaiah Thomas...the same guy who is coaching the playoff-bound Knicks....right....

We signed Javi becuase we thought we had Chris Wright. Hell, we did have Chris Wright until a last minute change of heart.
Wright changed his mind.... we went into panic mode to find a PG and we got Javi. It's not like Javi was our all-or-nothing #1 choice at PG.
...and I still don't think Javi is that bad of a player. I don't get why everyone is bashing him. I think he's improved tremendously and will become a solid PG

Yeah...I remember that article. I also remember awesome articles about Trevor Ferguson and videos of him pulling up from 30 feet out and dunking on people people in high school. I also remember articles about how fucking awesome Marcus Stone was in high school. And Jordan Collins was the first ever 4-year starter at Dematha and one of the top 10 players in his class as a freshmen and sophomore.
Javi was also one of last decently rated point guards left on the board.
^And Packbacker is right. Javi was a panic recruit. You don't sign panic recruits to be the star point guard for your program. You sign them to fill in holes and hope they surprise people.
Well Javi is surprising no one. And again...he's not horrible...but at best he could be a solid starting point guard when our main guy is injured or a solid backup when Degan gets back or Mays gets in.2/19/2008 3:57:10 PM |
