People just don't understand how backups work. Although I wonder what the retention policy is on an iCloud backup. 60 days? 90 days? A year? I don't do iCloud backups so I don't know. But when you delete a photo, you don't delete it from the backup. That is the one of the primary functions of a backup.

So people should stop complaining about having a picture around after it has been deleted.

Speaking of backups, had Hosted Solutions been taking proper backups of this site, then maybe we'd still have all of the threads going back to 2001. I believe it was being hosted at HS at the time of the great crash. Or maybe the owners just weren't paying for backups. Who knows.

1) I don't think it was done deliberately, it's extremely unlikely all of them came from iCloud too, this was a collection being acquired over years, probably through various means

2) This was definitely a failure of technology, more so than anything else, at least on the iCloud front. Between iCloud backups not being encrypted, no lockout on the login attempts for the backup downloading services (which aren't exposed to the public directly, but trivially easy to sniff out using basing techniques), no lockout on findmyiphone login attempts, and poor security question choices system, this could have entirely been prevented by Apple with different security measures in place. The only 2 things the end users could have done was consciously choose particularly obscure security answers (which defeats the purpose if you don't remember what you chose), or not taken the pictures at all (which is against human nature-- we want to text n00ds to our special someones).

iCloud was touted as secure, and people expect the services to be "reasonably" secure (and they were-- it's still not trivial to rip a backup even with the password), but it wasn't state of the art, and Apple has the resources to make sure it is.

Obviously I can't speak for what goes on behind the scenes, but if you're just talking about what the end user can see you only get access to restore the latest capture taken on your device. Every night the delta is taken and it replaces the previous night's stuff so in theory if you actually deleted the offending content from your phone and ran a backup, it should be removed from iCloud. Or at least you won't get the option to restore from a 2-3 day old backup. Of course, I only have the default 5GB plan, there may be some different options for people that pay for more storage, but I doubt it. It's not really enterprise level backups and really only serves as a way to restore your phone should you break it/lose it and get a new one.

Heh. Funny you mention that. I was working for HS during that time period as the the lead backup guy (which basically meant I was the last person to get hired on 3rd shift). I'm 99% sure we didn't do backups for them. As ancient as our backup system was at the time (It got upgraded right before I left in '08), it was pretty reliable at least and just about every screw up I can remember was due to customers not telling us what they wanted to back up/assuming that we could read their minds and never bothering to double check.

Correct. But they DID choose to shoot the photo/video in the first place, which is inherently risky. I'll 100% admit that I'm victim blaming when I insinuate these celebrities could have done more to prevent the situation, but it's the truth.

Call it bad luck, stupidity, carelessness, or whatever other slut shaming term you wish, the reality is that these things happen and they will keep on happening. Honestly, as bad as this thing is, I think what happened to Erin Andrews was 10119209219021x worse. Willingly taking videos/pics of you having sex and then having other people see it later is a risk worth careful contemplation and consideration of the damage that can happen. On the other hand, having some psycho use a fisheye camera lens to film you unchanging is on a completely different level of psychological/emotional violation. No real way to prevent/prepare for that craziness. I bet people of Tdub still watched/fapped to it though.

I hate to break it to you, but I really didn't have an 'argument' in this thread. I was making some snide/sarcastic quips about the celebrities who got hacked and jokingly blaming them for their misfortunes by suggesting they should have simply thrown money at the problem to shield them from what happened. I wasn't actually being serious.

The only thing that I'm semi-serious about is that I sorta feel bad them, while at the same time, I also think taking nude photos/videos of yourself always comes with the very real potential of having other people seeing them later. It's pretty dumb to blame these celebrity victims after the fact, but it was also pretty dumb of them to take the pics in the first place. It was also shitty for the hackers to steal the pics, and it also sucks that people's cellphones and n00ds aren't as secure as previously thought.

Most people in this thread are here for two reasons: 1. to fap to celeb n00ds, or 2. to laugh about the whole thing because it's pretty ridiculous, yet not all that surprising. For whatever reason, you decided to fixate on my iCloud remarks and be a complete and total nerd about it and hurl insults left and right. I'm not at all 'embarrassed' about anything I've said, mostly because it's all bullshit anyway. If you want to have a serious discussion about this, well, I think you came to the wrong place, since you are the only one who is actually upset about something a stranger wrote on a message board.
