My mom expressed concern one day while I was texting and driving. I told her about messing with an ipod while driving counterflow in Baghdad. She didn't think I was nearly as cool as I did.

I've put it off for way too long....

Any recommendations on where to order a holster for my .45 Peacemaker? No, not a concealed holster in a fanny pack, I mean the John Wayne leather hip rig, preferably with rings for extra rounds all the way around the belt.

does anyone here use a gun safe in their vehicle, or have feedback on using one? i'd like to get one so that it won't be as much of a problem if i'm carrying during the day and then decide to go to a restaurant serving alcohol.

i've seen the center-of-mass.com in car gun safes recommended on some forums but they look kind of small. i've got room in my vehicle (suv) for something bigger so that i can also stash a box of ammo, big rolls of cash etc. what works well? how did you mount it? was it easy to get in the habit of loading/unloading from your in vehicle safe frequently?

I have a Honeywell safe that I bolted into the back of my hatchback for quite a while.
It is ~ 15 x 12 x 12'' and has a numeric key pad and key lock.

I was probably locking my gun in my car 3 times a day for a long period of time. It is easy to get into the habit of doing it.

Speaking of which, I went ahead and submitted a request for funds for SCCC. We'll see how long it takes to get it. I'm sure they'll find something else to throw up as a roadblock.

Also...took the M4A1 out to the range for some night firing; mind you this is my first time doing this. So I've got the ACOG and the flashlight, but every time I took a shot, the gas from the muzzle clouded up the ACOG for a good five seconds or so. This was with and without the IR filter. Any prior service guys have any tips or tricks to alleviate this?

i'm looking at getting a gun for self defense to keep in the house and maybe take shooting once a year or so. i am thinking i want a pistol and a couple friends have recommended a 40 caliber glock.

i don't really want to spend too much money (maybe 300 bucks or so if possible?) since i am not planning on using it very often...but i want something that is safe, reliable, will do the job, and hopefully that my wife could use as well (she is fairly petite).

what do you guys think?

i'm sure this question was asked somewhere in this thread, but i gave up looking for it after reading 3 pages

that would be good. but if it's for home defense only, you can't beat a shotgun.

If she is fairly petite, you may wish to go with a 9mm. Buddy's wife shot his .40 and found it to just have too much recoil for her, she liked my 9mm.

I'd see if she wasn't willing to shoot the pistol before you purchase so she can give you feedback before the purchase (since this is also for her).

Simple to operate, effective, inexpensive and since you don't plan to train with it extensively, not as sensitive to accuracy issues. You can pick up a Remington 870 at a pawn shop for $200

I wouldn't go with a Glock for a petite woman simply because of the size of their grips. I'd look into an XD or an M&P for that. Anyway, you're looking at starting out around $500 for any of those.

1) Don't go cheap on firearms. Far better to spend a bit of money to get a reliable weapon than go cheap and have it malfunction when you need it most.

2) Used is your friend.

I"m a Europhile in this aspect - Walthers and Sig-Sauers make great pistols. If you're looking for a nice little pistol, Walther PPS. Just be advised that any tiny, concealable pistol you get is not going to be fun to shoot (but that's not what they're for, eh?).

I believe I have the same one or similar to what MaximaDrvr posted about bolted into my truck

I posted about it somewhere in this thread- I'll see if I can find it

ok here is the link to the page I posted it on (it is at the top)

message_topic.aspx?topic=503107&page=32

it works great, and to unbolt it, you would have to have the safe open, so there is really no good way to pry it out of there- it allows me to carry my gun with me everywhere and leave it in my truck with ease of mind

As always, this is IMO...A Glock is not "safe" for someone who only shoots once a year.
It is not safe for many people who shoot more than once a year.
The Glock design itself is safe, the problem is in the person handling the gun.
Glocks have no manual safety and have a light trigger pull. If you do not train to keep your finger out of the trigger guard then the likelihood of a negligent discharge is high.
I never recommend Glocks, XDs, etc to any gun noob for that reason.
The only way to make handling one of these safer for those who aren't as versed in gun handling is to always keep it holstered.

Look at getting a revolver instead; either a 38 special or 357 mag loaded with 38 +P.
A new Taurus or used Ruger will run you about $350.
A revolver is stupid simple, you don't have to worry about the reliability, and the heavy DA pull is much safer for those who can't seem to keep their fingers out of the trigger guard.

If you get a semiauto are you going to train how to quickly clear a jam?
A Glock will jam. I have a Glock 22 (40 S&W) that I can repeatedly make jam by limp wristing it.

Quote :
"and hopefully that my wife could use as well (she is fairly petite)."

Here again, a Glock is a bad idea because the grips are too big. The slide can be difficult for some weaker people to cycle.
40 S&W is a bad idea, there's too much recoil for a noob to shoot decently, especially so for a noob who is smaller and not as strong.

I think you should get a revolver. It's not as cool, but neither is shooting yourself in the leg while trying to put the gun up (that happend to my sister's friend).
If you want a semiauto then get a Sig, CZ, Ruger, etc. Just get something that is double action only, DA/SA, or has a safety that is easy to operate.
Make it a 9mm too. 9mm is plenty of gun as long as you get good ammo.

After you get it, shoot it a lot until you can operate it without thinking and work on the procedure for clearing a jam.

I use one of these with the combination lock:

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=462945

It's nice and small so it doesn't take up a bunch of space. You can secure it to the rail of your seat or something using a cable and just slip it under your seat.

Yes, it seems like a POS and honestly it is.
If you had the time, you could easily break one open with a pry bar, hammer, etc. You can cut the cable with heavy duty wire cutters.
It's not the best thing for keeping your gun. However, the point is you just need some way to store the gun for a few minutes while you're out of the car. This will keep someone from quickly getting to a loaded pistol and will be enough security to keep it from getting stolen by a tool-less thief.

I like it because it's small. An uncovered bigger safe/lock box in your cargo area would be a nice target for a bad guy.

Whats good for an inexpensive shotgun? The most research I have done is th sunday paper Dick's ads. Would a $299 Mossburg be a good purchase mainly for home protection? What would you suggest?

I picked up a Mossberg 500 a few years back for home protection and liked it. I got one with just the pistol grip for under $300 I think.

Plus if you get an all black one with the heat guard on top it's badass looking enough to make an intruder shit himself before you even have to fire it.

^^^the safe I have is small enough that it fits hidden underneath the bench seat in the back of my truck, but not everyone has that option

^^as for the mossberg, I have a 500 and I like it alot

people on here will give you the run around b/w the 500 and the remington 870- truth of the matter is, for something that you are using for home defense, either one will work fine for ya, and there are plenty of accessories out there that can make it as tacti-cool as you would like. lemme see if I can find a picture of what I did to mine.... well, looks like google pic's took down my pictures, and the originals are on my desktop back home, so I will post them whenever I get home

Mossberg also makes a (relatively) cheap tactical autoloader. 930 SPX. It's a 7+1 with a Picatinny rail, only about 500-600.

i really appreciate all you guys input...its been very helpful.

what i'm thinking is i like the ability to lock a 9mm up in a box and set it in a bedside table (and possibly conceal and carry down the road) and access it quickly i someone were to try to break in. with a shotgun, it would be fine for now...but when kiddies come along, i guess i would have an issue of storing it somewhere.

but if a shotgun is definitely the way to go, i guess i can sacrifice the benefits of a compact gun...but it sounds like a 9mm would do the trick too...am i right?

as for revolver vs. pistol...this may be stupid, but i really prefer the look of a pistol (and i imagine the feel as well...i've never held a revolver though). the walther pps, xd, and m&p all look great to me...but are more than i was planning on spending. any cheaper recommendations? if not, i am ok spending some extra money for a quality gun that will work when i need it.

i live in raleigh...is jim's gun shop the best in the area? would i be better off buying from the gun show in november?

You can buy a wall mount with lock to store a loaded shotgun. I don't really like them though because the only ones offered right now have key locks.

While a shotgun is the best thing for shooting someone it isn't always the best thing for ease of storage/access like you mention.
I don't keep a loaded shotgun that's real fast to get too, but I can access one if I had a minute's notice (handgun access is always within 5 second's notice).
Reason being the storage situation. I don't want to walk into my house to encounter a burglar pointing my own shotgun at me and I don't want to constantly unlock a shotgun when I get home and lock it when I leave. Another reason is I'm pretty confident in my handguns. I regularly shoot them in normal range sessions as well as shoot in a local IDPA style get together. I can't say the same for my shotguns. Go with what you shoot best.

You should shoot a revolver before deciding to buy an auto. You should shoot any gun you're thinking of purchasing for that matter.
If I was in Raleigh or you were willing to drive to Rocky Mount then I'd let you shoot a bunch of different guns and learn you a few things about different guns and what makes them good.
Almost any handgun is a good choice as long as you fully understand how they work, how to maintain them, and can shoot them decently.

Taurus handguns are cheaper as are Rugers. They work fine but aren't pretty.
You can also look at the used guns at PDHSC. Sometimes they have good deals.
Gun shows will only save you about $20 after you consider the cost of admission compared to a decent gun shop (like PDHSC). If you want a new gun and PDHSC doesn't have it in stock then they will order it for you. In my past experiences they've always been the cheapest in the area. I've bought 6 guns from them.

the 500 is a great way to go. it's a great and inexpensive shotgun. you can get a remington 870 for about the same price, but IMO, I think the mossberg looks better and is just as dependable.

AND Mr Joshua is right. I have a 500 with a heat shield, 30 mm red-dot sight, and ATI pistol grip adjustable stock. It's a mean looking fucker

mine looks similar, but it has a folding stock (holds 3 shells in the stock butt) and I put a light on the end of it (which would more than likely blind anyone before I would have to shoot them)

also, I think I have the 20" barrel (yours is longer- mine comes out to the end of the shell holder)

I'm not a fan of red dots on home shotguns. They just sit too high for me.
I like ghost ring sights.

I do need to get around to adding a light. Probably just attach a rail to the forearm and use a light clamped on with a scope ring. Ghetto style.
If I ever find a tritium vial then I'll drill a hole in the front sight and put it in.

As far as cheap shotguns, there's the Mossberg Maverick, the New England Firearms Pardner Pump, and a Norinco clone of an 870. All are around or just under $200 and should work ok.

The mossberg 500 is not as durable as the 870, but it's a moot point because anyone asking about a shotgun here will never shoot enough rounds in two lifetimes to break a 500.
I like the Mossbergs for the ergos.

If cheap and home defense are the criteria, then I'd hit the local shops looking for police trade ins (Rem 870, Moss 500, sometimes Ithaca 37). They will be as cheap as a new low end shotgun and will already have short barrels, maybe even mag extensions.

IMHO, I wouldn't sweat sights for a home defense gun. You've got a shotgun in a confined area. If you can't hit a BG over a bead at 15' - 25' then you probably shouldn't own a shotgun.
