^^ Try the hotels at http://www.applecorehotels.com. They have some of the most value for money properties in Manhattan. They are good for NYC standards.

^Cheapest I saw there was like $194/night. Still a bit out of my price range. I'm a cheap bastard apparently

Anybody had luck with the priceline negotiator thing? The fact that you can't see the hotel you're buying kinda sucks.

Read up on this site: http://betterbidding.com/

It's a wonderful tool. Also if you are traveling by yourself it's hard to beat the hostel route.

anybody know anything about this hotel? it has pretty good reviews on Tripadvisor and there's a room for $146/night on there, which is one of the best deals I could find for when I'm going

and not that it's that big of a deal, but the rooms look a lot bigger than the standard NYC hotel room too

I stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Upper East Side and it was really reasonable... $209/night for two double beds

I saw Manny Ramirez coming out of a hotel once and I think it was this one...so...whatever that means...

Awesome burger spot called The Burger Joint right near there, like on the same block in Le Parker Meridien

Heading up to NYC in a little over two weeks. Staying in Jersey City and I'm hoping this whole PATH thing works as well as advertised.

October is right in the middle of fall so it could go either way. Just look the forecast up the week before you go and you should have a good idea. It could be 80 or it could be 40 during the day. Also are you going in the beginning or end of October? That will make a big difference.

I live in JC and am a 5 min walk to both the Hoboken and Newport/Pavonia Path stations. They really are great. We go into the city just to wander around, eat, or see a movie quite often now. Maybe it's just me, but I think it's much smarter to spend less on a hotel by staying in JC so you can spend more playing around in the City.

^true, unless you do some partying. Coming back to Jersey late night can be a PITA. PATH doesn't run as often and a taxi will cost you $texas since you crossed state lines.

we'll be there in late october, so i'm guessing it will be a bit cooler, which is fine by me.

any suggestions on modestly-priced restaurants or bars in the upper west side?

I didn't venture over to the UWS that often, but my two favorite bars over there are Jake's Dilemma and The Gin Mill. If you like decent priced party bars where you can let your hair down that's your spot (they're located on the same block I think).

As far as restaurants I can't help you out really, though there's a great burger spot around there - Jackson Hole Burgers. They have a few locations in the city and one's on the UWS. I know of a great Italian place around 54th and 9th but that's not UWS (don't recall the name but their card is sitting on my night table (very random since I haven't been there in years). Also there's a great mexican place with fantastic guac on B'way around the 60s I think...but I don't recall the name or location. So yeah not a lot of help there

need some help with date selection people. southwest has these $39 flights going, but you have to book by Thursday, and the travel has to be between 9-9 and 11-17

so the question is, when do we go? are there any events anyone knows about? i've checked out concerts, but i'm clueless besides that. we'll probably stay in a hostel, so if anyone has recommendations there that would help too.

Depending on how for up the UWS - you should hit up Pony Bar. 45th & 10th. $5 all micro-brews. Can't beat that deal in NYC, plus the beer is quality.

^good stuff. But that's definitely not UWS

^^Nothing really comes to mind. I'd say late September just b/c its a nice time of year weather-wise.

^^^I looked into that special. I priced up a flight to NYC the last wknd of September...just in time to catch a Yankees Red Sox game. Saturday AM through Monday AM. Each flight is $39 BUT the taxes and fees are an additional $25 each way. WTF

Still an awesome deal but all said and done I'd spend way too much (esp on the Yanks tickets).

9/16-9/20
10/28-11/1

i'm thinking halloween might be cool...but the weather would be nicer in sept. hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

For the most part you'll be walking so it won't be too bad in NYC with a little nip in the air. Plus NYC in the fall should be nice. I'd go with October.

looks like they have hostels all over the city...what neighborhoods in manhattan would be best to stay in? looking for lots of live music and inexpensive food/drink. we can take trains to the tourist spots if needed.

It's fantastic. I went there with my girlfriend at the time like five years ago right before Christmas and we skated in the snow at dusk with all the buildings surround Central Park right around it.

Here is a picture post-snow at dusk. But when I was there last it was snowing like crazy. So fun and beats the heck out of the log-jam that is Rock Center.

** And I know Patrick was saying there is a better, less crowded place than both but Wollman Rink is definitely my favorite of the rinks in the City.

I'm going up to Tarrytown to see my sister the week before Christmas and then flying from Laguardia to San Francisco for Christmas and then coming back to New York City for the new bowl game in Yankee Stadium.

Not a better place on earth to be around the Holiday season...

Something comparable to the John Hancock skylounge in Chicago, or the Stratosphere in Las Vegas?
