March of the Penguins is a documentary about the annual journey of the Emperor penguins as they travel to their breeding grounds. It's narrated by Morgan Freeman and it's an absolutely beautiful movie. The penguins are really cute, and it's a really interesting story.

At the moment it has a 93% on RottenTomatoes.

Opening today at http://www.mygalaxycinema.com.

Showtimes are at 1:20, 3:20, 5:05, 7:10, and 9:10. You might want to come a little early because it looks like we might sell out the seven and nine shows.

more like

"holy crap, things that make people feel like they're in the know and part of the independent scene are popular"

or

"holy crap, being able to say you saw a movie that never played at crossroads20 is popular"

I don't think half of the people who came to see it know what the independent scene is.

As long as they don't fuck with my pants...

I saw a trailer for this and I was like, "WTF is this shit all about? How can a documentary about penguins be worth $7?"

but maybe I'll check it out sometime.

Yeah, especially not the people who come to see Penguins...

I don't think they watch it to be in with some scene, they 'prolly just think the ice birds are cute

The real people like that, the ones I fucking hate, are the ones that come out to like four indie hits a year.

YEAH MAN I LOVE INDEPENDENT FILM. HAVE YOU SEEN DONNIE DARKO?

I'm one of those people, except I don't pretend to have ever made an effort to really get into independent films... I'm just open-minded about them when someone recommends one.

who cares if it's an independent movie or not. A good movie is a good movie no matter how it was made.

i know get this whining about scene kids in another thread
why do people even care why other people are there to see a movie, go because you want to see it and don't worry about everybody else

if you don't know about the march of the penguins to their mating ground, and the trials they suffer i suggest checking the movie out.. i thought it was really interesting. antartica is beautiful, and its really touching to see what the penguins go through for their baby, only to spend a short time with it.. plus penguins are damn cute and they slide on their bellys a lot which is pretty funny to watch

Isn't the type of thing that is supposed to be free for people who get cable? I mean, I've got The Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel, National Geographic Channel, and Animal Planet, but I'm expected to pay $7 for a Penguin documentary?

It's true, this is the first theatrically released documentary of all time.

One of my friends said this movie should've been named Bataan Death March of the Penguins because the penguins are gonna die no matter what. This isn't Milo & Otis with penguins, this is real life. I can't take my five year old cousin to see this, because a depressed Kindergartener is as much of a bummer as a dead baby penguin.

I'ma just have to watch the trailers over and over again.

knowing that the movie will be frequented by children
i think they did a really good job with the mating and deaths of the penguins
they didn't show too much, and said a lot of things in a way that adults would understand and children wouldn't be as likely to get upset over
such as saying that the penguins "went down for a long slumber" or something to that extent
the theatre i was in had a TON of children, and no one seemed to be upset or crying... rather i think the kids payed attention when something silly happened, like penguins slipping on the ice or sliding around on their bellys
the website has some pretty cool pictures though if you just want to see cute penguin pics

not only was this a great movie, but it made the point that this species was one that could easily be made extinct or endangered without even actually saying so.

If all of them group together in one massive area like that in order to breed and birth, then what happens if global warming screws up the arctic and they can't migrate? Or alot of the snow and ice melts and screws up the ecosystem in one of their home areas? Or if we, for some reason, develop in that area one day and therefore screw up their trek?

Any major change in their ecosystem could destroy that entire species.

Also, the babies are cute

what does it mean that my thoughts when i saw them all grouped together like that were, "hey if i detonated a bomb over those fuckers, i could singlehandedly wipe out the emperor penguin population"

then i got to thinking about how a lot of the females were back at the ocean fishing and how they'd react if they came back to absolute fucking carnage

Yeah, this movie wasn't as G rated as I thought, but I appreciate the artistic realness of it. It was very good though and anyone who is obsessed with the National Geographic Channel or the Science Channel like I am should go and see this. Also, take a pretty girl like I did and earn major cool points.
