OK, I have a 2001 VW Jetta and its latest problem is that it refuses to start. The engine is turning over and when you bang on the fuel filter it automatically cranks up. I have replaced the fuel filter 2 times this summer with them both being filthy, pouring out black stuff.

The check engine light just now came on after this being a BIG problem for the past week or so. I have put a new filter on, started using higher grade gas, and I put "Sea Foam" in to clean it out. But it still doesn’t work and the check engine light is still on.

My question is... where should I take it? I obviously don't want to take it to a deal because they will charge me 100 dollars (or close to it) to even look at it. I want some where that is reasonably priced and knows Volkswagens.

Thanks

chris dale at import auto werks in north raleigh
greg ashe at village motor works in cameron village

i would trust either of these guys with anything i cant handle myself. both have a very very good reputation among the local vw crowd.

edit: although i sold my vag-com cable to a buddy, he still has it and so do a couple others. let me know and i'll see if we can scan that CEL for yah. may help figure out the problem.

true...just most of them dont as much as VWs.

my gf was looking at possibly getting a VW, but after doing some research, she decided that that wouldnt be a smart move in the long run.

i dont think the thread was called "sober46an3, what do you think of vws"

so just keep your opinions to yourself and quit trolling

vws are not reliable? They are one of the most reliable cars of all time.

my jetta is frickin 10 years old and the only times it hasnt run have been when i didnt want it to, ie: removed transmission, head, etc...theyre very reliable cars, all cars just have bugs to work out...

with that being said, any of the aforementioned places to take your car, west german, anyplace beethead recommended, or Black Forest can do you right and get things worked out. so give one of em a call and see what they can do for you.

well depending, how much the shop charges per hour of labor would be the biggest cost, but i would venture out on a limb(and maybe im wrong, someone else chime in) id say less than 200, and that might still be stretching it.

my guess would be 200-300 range.. that'd be to drop, clean, and replace the tank. assuming that is the problem.

if you're in durham, check out absolute. evan will do you right.

It ended up being a problem with the Mass Air Flow Sensor. It’s a total of 125. Out of everywhere recommended to me I took it to J & J Automotive on Hillsborough street across from UT and they have been great.
