I know this phone's been talked about a lot in other threads, but I think I should keep it in one thread.

I'm seriously ready to bust out the money and buy this phone from Cingular with a 2-year contract ($200 after MIR).

Does anyone have any personal experiences with this phone? How great is it? And any particular things you don't like about it?

You didn't like the size of a S710...and then went and got the smt5600?

Nice.

I've used this phone for over a year, dropped at least one hundred times, and then passed it on to my dad for extended use. Thing held up like a champ.

If you get a memory stick for it, you can use it as a portable mp3 player as well.

My only problem with this phone was the somewhat sluggish UI but compared to competing products it wasn't too bad.

[Edited on August 11, 2005 at 4:12 PM. Reason : and actually at the time a lot cheaper, but size was the issue]

I dunno why people even mention robustness.

My T637 has fallen down multiple times...nothing happened.

In fact, Nokias are the most sturdy.

How is the battery life? Does it come with headphones?

Robustness is important esgargs. If you ever drop a Motorola device you'll know exactly what I mean (with the exception of the StarTAC);

I would rate battery slightly below average if you have the backlight and all screen options enabled. I'd charge every 2 days until I figured out that I should lock my phone when I put it in my pocket. I habitually put all my charge devices on tap every night so I personally don't have issues with battery life.

What I liked:

-Very high end look. The phone feels and looks sturdy and the color scheme is excellent.
-Excellent TFT LCD that also was pretty scratch resistent. Despite all my drops, I never got any gashes.
-Best Camera phone I've ever used, and I've used quite a lot. I've got a book filled with pictures a professional photographer took with this phone. Some of them look like they were taken on an high end digital camera.
-Mem stick + mp3 playback.
-BT

What I didn't like:

-Slightly sluggish UI. All those crisp graphics seemed to have bogged down the processor.
-Not as much bat life as my old nokia until I figured out how to optimize energy consumption.
-Having to answer questions anytime someone saw my phone.

I don't know if the cingular package comes with headphones or not.

JonHGuth, I was not being sarcastic:

Thats a big phone although it is thin and fairly light which, I suppose, is what you meant.

My contract expired in feb

I think they don't care about contracts...they get commission based on how many phones/contracts they sell.

I know someone who got a top of the line cellphone for free just cuz he referred like 10 people to Cingular through the on campus thing.

I'm assuming that anywhere you get this phone for $100 AR it's going to be with a contract.

the s710a is a really cool phone, but are you actually going to use all the features? i like it a lot, but i don't hardly use most of the features. i only use it as a phone and a camera. it does get a little bulky sometimes if you are carrying it in your pocket.

if you wait a few months you can get a w600 or z520. they are smaller, have almost as many features, as well as a 1.3 megapixel camera just like the s710a. the displays are not as nice tho

So can I just go down to the cingular store on campus and get an S710a for $100 after MIR by simply extending my contract by 2 years? I don't need to get the plan?

Also, another thing.. can you connect an s710 to another bluetooth phone? I've got stuff on my T637 that I'd like to transfer, if possible, and I don't have access to a bluetooth computer.

I don't mind signing another contract...its just that alot of times those deals (amazon, best buy etc) are only for NEW customers, existing customers can't usually sign up for a new contract and get the phone for the discounted price

My adivce is to buy one new and unlocked on ebay, then get service with whoever the hell you want.

You can get them on ebay for under 200 bucks. And you WILL save money by not being locked into a fucking two year contract to go with it.

All the cellphones I have bought from Cingular have been unlocked.

In fact I went to an Indian store this summer to get my T637 unlocked and they took a look and were like dude it is not locked.

the z520 does not have 1.3 megapixel, you should know this. can't you tell a difference in quality between the s710a and the w600i vs the z520?

and it may be just me, but i think the w600i camera is a little better than the s710a, and i really like the option to pause and resume the videos you record. plus the video dj is pretty cool.

the s710a has bluetooth. you can connect it to any other device that has bluetooth (including the t637)

i thot it was. i never paid too much attention to it
i've never bothered putting pics on my puter that i took with the z520. i usually use the k750 or s710a since they support memory cards
