Ok so I have been doing some digging and have yet to find an answer

why are tu-160 engines mounted so far back under the wings (and you need to provide links to your sources)


My initial guess it the length of the engine with respect to air flow.....but I am trying to confirm this

my guestimate is to take advantage of the high pressure below the wings but still give similar flight characteristics to a rear engined plane... it would also keep the thust of the engines away from the tail as much as possible and on a plane w/ that much thrust velocity that could be critical to not rip off the horizontal stabilizer. (notice it is also elevated out of the thrust path)
