^Why not? They're cheap, convenient, and still fun.

^^If you look at cost versus track time, any track event will beat any autoX by a decent margain ($1.81/min for my last event vs $3.33/min (assuming a $20 entry fee and 6 runs on a minute long course, which is pretty optimistic)). Convenient is debatable, VIR is roughly the same distance away as Winston. And fun is no contest, at least in my opinion. You'll go faster around more turns on a road course than you will at your fastest point at an autoX.

Most people don't rate fun in $/min. Most people say 30$ per day is a hell of alot better than 150+++.

Convenient isn't debatable, as I never drew a comparison. But for argument's sake, there are autox closer than Winston.

Again, it was never a comparison. If autox weren't any fun, there wouldn't be 100+ people going to nearly every event scheduled.

But, if you guys still can't get off of your high horse... whatever floats your boat.

Sure, cost per minute of driving is better, but for those of us that can't afford a full weekend of driving, autocrossing is the way to go. It also costs a lot less to prepare a car for autocrossing. I don't need a rollbar, I can borrow a helmet, my tires and brake pads last longer... it's a pretty significant difference.

And it's not like autocrossing isn't fun, and that it doesn't improve you as a driver. Many of the best autocrossers out there do track events too. Ken Kalil comes to every event and usually gets FTD... he road races too. The same can be said about many of the best drivers....

just for future reference. you dont need a cage/helmet/anything special for a track event.

you can borrow a helmet. and you can use stock setups.

but its all good. ive got love for all auto sports.

Most clubs require that convertibles have roll bars, and they're more stringent on the safety equipment that you use (harnesses, helmets, etc have to be more recent and not expired). For instance, you have to have a SA2000 rated helmet for the track, but only a cheap DOT approved helmet for autox.

Turns out my brother probably isn't going, so I don't have any way to get my tires out there. Anybody got a big trunk?

^I understand your viewpoint, however...

Its not $30 for a day. Its $30 for less than 5 minutes of driving, plus you have to work a few hours.

i really dont think the two activities are comparable.. theyre really very different, require different skill sets, different types/amounts of competition, different goals, different rewards, etc etc etc

when most ppl talk about a "track event" it is an HPDE. there is no competition, it is strictly prohibited. no timing devices at all (for insurance reasons)

unless everyone in here is doing time trials or door-to-door racing (i doubt, except that honda challenge guy)

thats what i'm saying. that and the different skill sets are the biggest reasons theyre different.

i'm not an expert at either, but from my experience in both i wouldnt say so. i dont think a great road courser would necessarily be great at autox and i dont think a great autoxer would necessarily be great at a road course.
