The appeal of the wheeling build (aside from the enjoyment of actual wheeling) is the ability to fabricate exactly what you want and the infinite possibilities involved in building a rig. Modifying cars for speed / handling ability, while also enjoyable and something I do myself, is somewhat limited to what you can buy aftermarket and bolt on. Sure, you can build your engine to your exact specs, but off road rigs have engines also, and they get built for their purpose (low end torque, ability to run at extreme angles, low speed cooling). An offroad rig may start out as a Jeep, or toyota, or fullsize, but when it is done it may have a chevy engine running on LPG with 1 ton axles (probably from seperate vehicles) and look nothing like the vehicle it started as. Whereas with a car, say a RX-7, S2000, or even a classic such as my 67 cutlass will always be what it started as. They may have forced induction upgrades or a larger displacement version of virtually the same engine as well as an assortment of aftermarket suspension peices, but the only thing that been fabricated is at most a custom turbo intake manifold, but more likely a speaker box and a place to mount your driving lights.

This is why I enjoy wheeling.

This is not a bash on gearheads and people who enjoy their cars. I enjoy both as do many members on this board like coronakid and BigBlueRam and many others.

Lots of people both offroad and have fast cars. I know of 6 that I work with. Their offroad vehicles do not need bulldozers to clear trails for them and they don't need to wear a helmet because they are doing something much more safe than riding a four wheeler or dirt bike over rocks big as the damn tires on the thing.

As far as a pathetic subculture goes...you should check your tww message board flaming subculture. Last i heard that went out soon after the start of your freshman year in college.

As far as spending thousands of dollars goes, people want to and they enjoy it. Just because you can't drive it on the road doesn't mean it is a waste of money. Last time I checked you cannot drive a hatteras yacht on the road. Nor can you easily drive a corvette through a rock garden. Everything has its purpose and different people enjoy different things. Just because you don't like something or understand it and are bathing in the ignorance of having little or no knowledge about it does not mean it is bullshit, stupid, worthless, or a waste. In fact if you believe that, you are the one that is a waste because you are an ignorant piece of shit if you do not understand that different people enjoy different things and alot of them do not give a fuck what you think.
