Fuck New Orleans. Flush it out to sea.

The rest of the areas have my sympathy and support.
Only the French would start a city under sea level next to the ocean, and only the USA would fucking try and fix it.
We have millions of acres of available land. Fucking relocate.

I am saying that it is stupid to rebuild in that area.
Even the Dutch have said that, and they are under water as well.
There is a cost-to-benefit ratio. Holland accepts that they will have a super flood once every 10,000 years, estimations for NO are more like once every 250 years.

We have lots of land, the Dutch don't. We don't need a city under sea level.

^ not when the house is under sea level

And actually, this whole disaster is quite good for my company. We make both automotive components and even chain-saw components... can't make enough for chain-saws at the moment, and there is going to be a strong demand for new cars down there soon.

Rebuild the gulf states excluding the coastline (protect that) and NO (relocate it).

We shall create a new economic program; a free trade agreement with this land called Louisiana. It will provide jobs especially at low wages. It will be the Louisiana/America Free Trade Agreement.

And we will call it LAFTA.

Why? I mean, one can argue that it's "stupid" to live next to the Gulf at all, what with the raging hurricanes.

Actually I'd say the reverse: it's stupid to have tiny towns on the coast that are entirely wiped out by hurricanes; it's much better to have strong port cities even if they need giant walls around them.

But you can just ask yourself: if the location of New Orleans is so "stupid," then why have millions of people built a giant economic center around it? Are you saying they're all stupid and you're smart? Why isn't Biloxi a major American city, since presumably they were "smart" and settled on higher ground?

why did people make it into a giant economic center? because it was there and it was close to being in a good spot, thats why. Its at the mouth of the Mississippi River, the biggest river in the US. Relocating it ten miles upriver just didn't make economic sense to the people involved down there, so they figured they could mooch off of the rest of the US taxpayer's dollars to pay for their own laziness.

Well, It aint there no more. So there aint no need to rebuild it in the same place. Cleanup what you can, then build it ten or twenty miles up the river. The net result is the same. It takes four or five extra hours for a ship to get there... whoopty fucking do. They can make that time up in the crossing.

Actually, they have. They wanted to make the Federal Government pay to upgrade their levies because they refused to pay for it themselves. The only difference is that they didn't think they would actually run out of time waiting to be saved by the tax payers of other states.

New Orleans is located at a very good economic point, the delta of the Mississippi. When the French settled the area, that location would be extremely ideal because it would allow for a supply point that had access to the sea and the heartland of North America.

There are billions upon billions of dollars wasted on pork in this country, why don't you go and protest those initiatives?

It is pure folly to rebuild the entire city on that spot. The land is still sinking and will continue to do so as long as water is being pumped out from below. The older neighborhoods were always above sea level and they can be salvaged for a time. Maybe if they bulldoze the flooded housing, bring in 10-15 feet of fill dirt, and built the levees even higher...that will be fine so long as the state of Louisiana wants to pay for it.

Treetwister,

You've got to be trolling. Take a look at a US map sometime. See all those states in the midwest - Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, etc, you know - The Breadbasket of the US. How do you think that all that grain and corn gets out of the country?

The port of New Orleans is the largest in the US and 4th largest in the world for a reason dumbass.

You know how they get it to New Orleans? By truck and plane and train...I said NOTHING to downgrade the importance of the seaport in New Orleans...I simply said the MISSISSIPPI RIVER is nowhere near the shipping channel it used to be...you know how all the ships cargo that comes into New Orleans gets to the rest of the country? Truck, train, plane...

Plane.

Did you just say PLANE?

As in, by air PLANE?

Do you have any idea how expensive it is to ship anything by airplane?

The mississippi is the cheapest way to get goods from the heartland to the ocean.

Where do you kids get some of your notions?

Look dipshit, I spent 2.5 months paddling down the Mississippi this summer. Barges BY FAR are the least expensive way to transport those goods out of the country by a factor of at least 4. I'll dig up the exact numbers this afternoon but you're way off base here.

Airplanes? - are you fucking serious?

It's not just agri goods either. Metal (scrap and otherwise), coal (how do you think it gets to the midwest), fuel, etc.

I'll dig some numbers for you though. It's really amazing how much a barge holds, and how much traffic there is on the river.

Didn't read most of this, but one early comment caught my attention -- that China will pay for it.

Somewhat true, but what typically happens is that money comes out of the most liquid budgets available.. typically DoD. I happen to work for a contractor so I've been hearing about money that is being cut from DoD b/c of this all the time.

So China ends up paying less for our military because of N.O. reconstruction!

p.s.
i bet 70%+ of the things you use daily to "provide" for "you and yours" are subsidized in some way
