"Tony Hawk's American Wasteland: First Look
Skate 'til you drop with this huge, streaming non-stop new game. New screens, impressions and movies.
by Douglass C. Perry (IGN.com)

July 19, 2005 - Re-creating the greatest skateboarding game on Earth every year has got to be tough. Yet Neversoft manages each fall to deliver a new version of the Tony Hawk series replete with distinct moves, new levels, and a slew of creative additions. But what could it possibly do to re-invigorate fans who feel distanced by the seemingly superficial changes made in the Underground series? Or who have simply burnt out altogether?

If Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 rewrote the game for street skating, and Tony Hawk's Underground gave the series a new facelift, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is like switching from working at a small 20-man company to a mega-corporation. That's mixing a lot of metaphors, but the basis for American Wasteland is close to genius, close to something we've been hoping to see for years. Once you've unlocked all of the various sections of the city, Neversoft's seventh game in the series enables you to skate through the entirety of Los Angeles from one end to the other without a single loadtime, cutscene, or anything else to stop you from feeding your Tony Hawk skating addiction to its fullest. That means you could potentially skate for dozens or square miles without stopping once. We've seen it in action, and it's remarkable how long the lines can stretch. Imagine how high your combo count could if you continued it from Santa Monica to East LA? As Carl Sagan would say, billions and billions, baby.

New Noob on the Block

There are several modes to dip into, with extra special dibs going to Xbox and Xbox 360 fans (we'll talk about the new online capabilities in a bit). On all versions, you can play the newly refined Story mode, which sees a young misunderstood skater from the Midwest dropped off in Hollywood, eager to become a legendary skater. He is instantly ripped off and humiliated, losing all his belongings (except for a skateboard, naturally), and with the help of the pink-haired punk Mindy, he progresses from helpless noob to skating pro. American Wasteland, which is a nod to the roots of the 1980s, is more like THUG 1 in that you build up your skating skills as the new kid on the block, with skating pros such as Tony Alva appearing to help guide you. Speaking of '80s skating god Tony Alva, his likeness and voice are officially used in American Wasteland

Re-introducing the '70s surf move, the Bert Slide.

Implementing several of the best ideas from Tony Hawk's Underground 1 and 2, American Wasteland's story mode goes one step further than the others. Incorporating all of the create-a-player aspects from the previous set of games, this fall's game includes barber shops, clothes stores, and skate shops as part of the streaming landscape of LA, as opposed to load-time heavy, exterior modes. So, you'll never leave the Story to enhance or improve; it's all built in.

Happily, Neversoft has returned to less obnoxious Bam Margera-style humor (phew!) and more straight-up fun in complex, interactive missions. After getting a mohawk, changing pants, shirt, and shoes, you locate Mindy who points you in the right direction, suggesting missions (rather than level objectives) in the never-ending world. You'll instantly be introduced to an old famous skater, Iggy, who apparently has been squatting on a precious piece of land that's built on an old-abandoned skate park ("Green Pipe's Point"). As part of your overall goal structure, by completing missions you'll locate pieces for the park, helping to assemble one of the biggest and most impressions "create-a-park" levels ever in the series. We're talking huge, like 10 city blocks huge. It's very impressive to see this park; and there are 40 pieces needed to complete it.

Missions are structured similarly to THUG games, specifically THUG 2. You'll complete a bunch of easy things, move on to the next one, and then a big fatty will involve several parts to complete it. These story-pushing missions enable you to destroy some part of the landscape in order to progress, which was one of the more likeable aspects of THUG 2. Only here, they destructible locations are bigger and badder. There may be two- or three-part missions in which you'll have to destroy something really large in order to progress. You might have to destroy construction equipment to open up a sewer pipe connecting you to East LA, or you might have to take down a giant dinosaur statue to collect a piece of a the skatepark puzzle.

In either case, you might have to perform a trick or a combination of tricks in one situation, and then perform another stunt to complete the task. Once you've opened up a new level, you can then instantly skate to that area without a single load screen. Additionally, if you didn't want to skate it, you could take a city bus, and it would almost instantaneously bring you there. Areas of LA revealed to us include East LA, Santa Monica, Hollywood, Downtown, and Beverly Hills, and there are many more. We suspect that perhaps Dogtown, Venice is in it (if not already in the Santa Monica part). There might be an airport, the San Fernando Valley is a likely candidate, as are numerous theme parks…though we doubt any official ones like Disneyland will actually make an appearance.

If you don't want to follow major storyline missions, there are dozens of sponsored challenges that offer up different kinds of goals, as well as NPCs who will ask you to perform moves based on call-outs. If you happen to see cash signs floating in mid-air (you know! Just like in real life!), skate into them to engage in new missions, enter skating events, and earn new equipment, cash, and more. You can also graffiti the crap out of everything, only this time you'll learn new styles of graffiti and you can paint anywhere while skating, on the ground, on busses, etc. It also looks like the off-the-skateboard movement has been improved. The walking, running, and climbing animations are more fluid and realistic, but also more playable, perhaps due to Neversoft's brand new in-house motion-capture studio. That's what it looks like, anyway. We'll have to give it a whirl when Activision finally lets us play it!

No crazy vehicles here, just a sweet new BMX bike.

Neversoft has introduced several new moves in various areas, including a handful that take previous tricks to new heights. You can now pull off one-foot grinds and manuals. This is a seriously great idea, adding new depth and challenge to an already great set of moves. You can pull off double flips and rolls (double tap Dpad to get this going), a backflip, Bert Slides and Bert Rolls (moves based on Hawaiian surfer Larry Bertleman's innovative sliding techniques form the 1970s), and an awesome addition to the Natas Spin. Once you get on a fire hydrant and start a Natas Spin you can modify it by getting into a handstand, sitting position, or into a one-footer. Crazy cool! The Freak Out is back, and there is a handstand move and a pogo board street move too.

Then there is the totally new addition of the BMX bike. Since extreme sports games have essentially bitten the dust, with the sole exception of the Tony Hawk series, BMX games such as Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX and Dave Mirra's Freestyle BMX are simply gone. But that doesn't mean they weren't fun or good. They were. Neversoft, seeing that its extra vehicle "thing" was going somewhere good but not quite nailing it in the last two games, has hit the jackpot with the BMX bike.

Using a totally new set of physics and mechanics for riding bikes, players can now jump from a skateboard to a BMX bike and rack up mad points doing entirely different tricks and stunts. The main tricks seem to be based around whip maneuvers -- standing up and spinning the bike under your body in an aerial move. BMX-er Rick Thorne trains you, and his funky dude-ish personality is, we're told, accurately represented in the game, while Mat Hoffman will also make an appearance. There are all sorts of maneuvers, from flips to stalls to grinds, plus multiple combos.

Classic, Multiplayer, and Online

For those who just want to skip the Story mode altogether, Classic Mode is back. Activision hasn't said exactly what levels it will pull from old games, but dozens of classic Tony Hawk Pro Skater levels have been brought back, fully updated with new graphics and looks.

The newly added offline co-op modes look like a blast, enabling players to split the screen to combine forces and complete goals together.

"While PS2 has always been online, this is the first year Xbox gets to feel the online glory. Neversoft has either relented through sheer fan pressure or has finally decided to take the high road (finally!), and this year, American Wasteland will be Xbox Live compatible for both Xbox and Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 version features Normal Mapping, high resolution textures, and improved graphics, plus blazing framerates. Unfortunately for GameCube fans, no online mode is in sight, though the two-player split-screen adversary and co-op modes will be included in all versions.

Online, players can log in and play classic THPS modes such as Horse and Elimiskate, while Combo Mambo enables you skate for tags or points. Another mode, Pot of Gold, is very much like King of the Hill -- you have to grab the pot of gold and then start comboing before someone steals it from you. Using the new 360 controller for American Wasteland should also be a real treat too.

The Natas Spin gets an enhancement with handstands, sitting positions, and one-footers.

Neversoft has always "gotten it." This series has consistently defined cool in a way few games could ever hope to. While the THUG series was a departure from its roots, American Wasteland looks to create non-stop Tony Hawk action in a fluid, streaming world, incorporating the best elements of the THUG series, while giving players a wild assortment of modes, moves, cultural icons, BMX bikes, and online capabilities like never before. In short, it's rad looking, fellas.

With the addition of '70s artist Jimbo Phillips artwork to provide visual flavor, and a still unannounced early '80s soundtrack to provide it with sonic life, we feel confident saying Tony Hawk's American Wasteland stands to be one of the best iterations in years. PS2, Xbox and Xbox 360 owners can vie online -- and Xbox 360 owners are in for a surprise that Activision has only hinted at -- while the streaming, unlocking city should prove to be a skating experience unlike any we've ever experienced in the series. This could very well be the Tony Hawk you've been waiting for.

If you're interested in this game, be sure to add it to your wishlist. You can keep notes, rank games, get updates by email, and more."

the soundtrack is...interesting

i mean, it sounds good, but its a little heavy subject matter wise for a skateboarder game.

i mean, California Uber Allies is about former California Gov. Jerry Brown.

"Tony Hawk's American Wasteland: Hands-on
We hopped on our boards, busted out a couple triple kickflips and wrote home to tell about it.
by Chris Roper

October 3, 2005 - Many moons ago back on the original PlayStation, Neversoft sort of came out of nowhere and delivered what was easily one of the best extreme sports games ever made in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. The beauty of the game was not only its dead-perfect controls, but also that a niche sport like skateboarding could be translated so well to a videogame and find resounding consumer and critical success as a result.

Neversoft has been delivering updates to the series on a basically yearly schedule since then, with the series changing from the Pro Skater moniker after the fourth title and switching over to Tony Hawk's Underground. While the past two Underground titles focused more on tomfoolery and general destruction, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland sees the series return to its purer skateboarding-oriented roots. The game very much seems to put the focus back into the elements of skating itself, which longtime Tony Hawk fans will certainly appreciate.

The game starts out with your chosen character hopping on a bus and heading to Los Angeles where skateboarding thrives and skaters aren't the bane of the law that they are elsewhere. You'll quickly run into Mindy, a local skater-chick who helps you learn the layout of the city, meet some other important NPCs, explain how the skate shops work and so on, and so forth. From there you'll meet up with some skating legends and begin to build your name amongst the greats. It's not Citizen Kane, but it works.

Step 1: Lure Roadrunner Into Acme Rocket
American Wasteland's goal structure and story progression feels sort of like a combination of THPS4 and the two THUG games. Like the Underground titles, there's an actual background story that you're working through, which starts out with your skater basically wanting to prove himself to the local thrashers in Los Angeles. These main story-oriented goals are usually given to you by Mindy or one of the other major characters in the game, though there are a whole slew of side goals that you can opt to take. For example, roaming drunks will challenge you to perform a series of tricks in a certain amount of time for some cash, which you now need to purchases clothes, haircuts, boards, and such.

While longtime fans of the Tony Hawk series have become "one" with the franchise's control scheme and are able to pull off a 720 Christ Air in their sleep, the Tony Hawk games actually employ a fairly complicated and deep control setup. From manuals to lip stalls to reverts and more, the amount of moves available to players is incredibly large, and new players may find the overall control system a little complicated at first.

Because of this, Neversoft essentially starts you with the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater move set, basically only giving you access to grabs, flip tricks and grinds at the start of the game. This list quickly expands though, where various folks around the city will quickly teach you how to perform the series' other fundamental moves. For example, one of the first skaters you'll meet explains how manuals work and has you ride one out for a short distance. Old players will be able to fly through these challenges in only a few minutes and have access to the series' full move set quite quickly, while new players will learn each move one at a time, greatly helping level out the learning curve.

Like every other title in the series before it, American Wasteland adds to the franchise's already massive list of moves. For example, you now have the ability to string together different Natas Spin moves, similar to the land-based combo strings introduced in THPS4. You're now also able to stall on not only lips but rails as well. And as an addition for hardcore skaters, Neversoft added the ability to perform a Tail Tap on quarter and half-pipes.

The on-foot action has been expanded, as well. You're now able to run up walls, perform flips and more, giving you the ability to reach more places without your skateboard than before. While the off-board elements of the series has been less than perfect in the past, Neversoft has tweaked your character's sneaker time controls as well as the camera, making for much easier control when on-foot. The game is still best when you're on your board of course, but it's quite nice that this aspect of the series has been tweaked, tightened and improved upon.

Half the Wheels, But Just as Fun
Aside from your board and kicks, you have a third transportation option this time around: BMX bikes. Various bikes are located throughout the game and acquiring one simply requires skating up to it and jumping on. At any point you can then switch back to your skateboard and the bike will stay where you've left it, allowing you to leave it, complete a skateboard challenge and the hop back on the bike if you wish.

BMX challenges are all secondary, optional missions. You can't complete skateboard goals while on a bike or vice-versa, but from the time we've spent on two wheels this aspect seems to be a very sweet addition to the series, and so far appears to be the best non-skateboard element Neversoft has added to the franchise thus far.

Bikes are controlled via both analog sticks, with the left stick used for steering and the right used for tricks. Right analog stick tricks are contextual, so depending on what you're doing the stick will have different effects. For example, while riding out a wheelie the trick stick will spin your handlebars; while airborne it'll flip or rotate the body of your bike.

The bike's trick system actually feels more natural than the standard system used for skating. Instead of pressing a button and having your skater perform a complicated move, which really has no real-world similarity to pressing a button, you're flicking the right stick in the direction that you want to flip or spin your bike. It somewhat transfers the feeling of actually doing the move, which is pretty cool. We're pretty psyched to see how well we can master the bike's trick system as it's an entirely different feeling than the skating system, but at the same time feels just as tight and refined as being on a board, at least from the time we've been able to spend on a bike thus far.

Lay of the Land
For the first time in the franchise, all of the levels in Tony Hawk's American Wasteland are connected, and as the game's level data is streamed as you transition between sections, it's possible to skate from one end of the world to the other without stopping. Hell, it's even possible to pull off one ginormous combo, as you skate from end to end of you're incredibly good.

Do know that this is not GTA meets Tony Hawk, however. American Wasteland does not feature one giant city with vast, expansive city blocks that span for miles and miles. The game is still very level-oriented with small, "greatest hits" sections of Los Angeles, connected via tunnels of some sort.

For example, you begin the game in Hollywood where you'll meet up with Mindy. Hollywood is roughly the same size as a medium-sized THUG level in that there are plenty of places to thrash, but it's fairly compact. Mindy tells you that she knows a shortcut to Beverly Hills through a nearby mall, which acts as the transition tunnel between the two levels. You can freely skate between the two stages once you open Beverly Hills, but the loading tunnel separates them. Beverly Hills then connects to Skate Ranch, which again is connected to Beverly Hills via another tunnel. Each of these tunnels is themed in some fashion, so the mall shortcut connecting Hollywood to Beverly Hills features benches and potted plants while the tunnel to Skate Ranch features a whole slew of rails and ramps.

Though it's a little unfortunate that the game hasn't made the jump to one giant, expansive city yet, it's understandable that it's still built around smaller, detail-packed levels. For starters, the Tony Hawk series has always crammed a lot of ramps, rails, obstacles and all sorts of other tidbits into its areas, and as it is now, that level of detail couldn't really be hit with an entire city -- at least not on the targeted current-generation systems. We'd bet a short stack of cash that Neversoft will transition to a GTA-type city once it targets the series solely at next-gen consoles, but for the time being the developer still has to play nice with the Xbox, PS2 and GameCube.

"As mentioned and exactly like the previous Tony Hawk games, most of the game's areas are something of a "greatest hits" of a section of the city. When you're in Hollywood for example, you'll find a small version of the Walk of Fame, a red carpet movie theater and so forth. Beverly Hills seems like a very money-centric setup with store windows and whatnot making up most of the landscape, with the all-important rails and ramps shoved up against the storefronts.

Perhaps the most interesting level we've seen thus far is Skate Ranch. This is where you'll meet Iggy, the game's main NPC that'll provide most of the story progression once you meet him. He's a fictional character who skated with Tony Alva and other greats back in the early days of skateboarding history, and he'll act as something like the Godfather in American Wasteland.

Anyhow, when you first arrive at Skate Ranch you'll find it to be something of a landfill with various low-budget ramps and rails scattered throughout the environment. The park is fun to skate in at the start, but as you continue to progress throughout the game things really start to get interesting here.

At various sections in the game's other environments, you'll be given a challenge to essentially destroy, modify or damage a major part of the environment. Once you complete these challenges, that piece of the city will then be added to Skate Ranch, allowing you to continuously build upon and modify the Ranch's setup as the game progresses.

We had a run-through of Skate Ranch in both its first, basic form, as well as what it can look like later on in the game after it's been outfitted with various pieces of other levels. It's pretty cool to start with, resembling something like one of the competition levels from most any of the past Tony Hawk games, but as Skate Ranch starts filling up with other pieces, it begins to feel like Skate Heaven from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. In essence, Skate Ranch begins to become the ultimate setup for extremely long lines, with everything connected and laid out in a fashion that skaters could normally only dream about.

Skate On
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is scheduled to ship for all three current-gen systems on October 18th, just a couple weeks from now. The Xbox 360 version should hit stores right around the system's launch on November 22nd, so gamers who plan on picking up that system may be in for a bit of a personal struggle over whether to pick up the current-gen game in two weeks or wait another month and go with the 360 version.

Either way, American Wasteland looks like Neversoft has continued to steer the series in the right direction. After seeing THUG 1 and 2 focus more on the Margera-driven idiotic (though fun) madness, it's nice to see the series returning its focus to skateboarding rather than pure unadulterated chaos. Stay tuned as we'll have more info on Tony Hawk's American Wasteland leading up to its release."

One of the earlier Tony Hawk games used a Rage song. Punk's always been linked to skateboarding, so it makes sense to use even the political stuff.

And is it just me, or does that picture of the skate shop remind anyone else of Skate or Die?

Everytime I see the tracklist for Tony Hawk games, I think it sucks. Then later on, I realize I like it because why would I want to listen to music while I'm playing video games that I already listen to when I'm not playing videogames?

I've been playing it for the last hour or so, gave a copy to my roommate

It's fun as hell, the BMX takes some getting used to, but i'm feelin it

The Classic mode is mad fun, just levels and goals like the old THPS games, most levels are remakes of the old ones

bout to grub though, i can give more impressions later

When are you going to give away some more copies?

Namely, when you gonna hook me up with one?

Had a good time.

Disappointed that I didn't get a game tho. First in the PS2 division till those two guys came in at the last minute and beat out my high score. And I still was probably higher than any of the guys in the X-box division. I shoulda knew better and tried it for the X-box

Can't wait for the next one. Won't know where I'm gonna find some peeps to play w/ me, but I'm sure somebody will want to pick up a guy who's a legit level 30 in Halo.

Yeah I had a good time too, also didn't win anything but my roommate won a second game, haha, lucky ass.

And yeah I'll be there for Paintball but looking forward more to Call of Duty 2, we are all around level 27-28 Halo players so I'm glad to see we'll have some good competition.

Also looking forward to the previously mentioned Hold'Em tournament and the True Crimes give-away.
