it wasn't too bad. I bit grainy -- a la the latter half of Man on Fire -- but it works since the tone is grainy. The fictional plot was humorous and Keira Knightly has a sex scene.

No one would see this if Knightly wasn't in it. This movie would probably be better if it was based on the comic book character.

If anyone wants two free tickets, send me a PM. You would have to come to Poe Hall since I'm working.

Did anyone see the preview for this in the theatres. It started with a Knightley voiceover that was something like "My name is Dahmeeno, and I am a bounty hunter."... I think many people joined me in a "wtf this is gay" chuckle.

Wow, I actually liked it. I thought that the only part that needed serious work was the ending, it was like they were running out of time and did a half-ass job of it.

Overall, I think that it was done really well given that the bread and butter is not the most interesting story ever. The director did a great job. It has a very dynamic cast of characters that work well with each other, and everyone brings something to the table. Keira was NOT in there just for looks either; she did some good acting and one well done monolouge.

i agree the actors were great and all added their own dynamics. but the script was terrible. the dialogue hurt to listen to at times. way too cheesy.

not to mention the shaky nausea-inducing camerawork and perpetual one-second shots. the director did the same thing in man on fire, but he did it with purpose and in moderation. so it worked wonderfully. this was excessive i thought and just made it painful to watch.

there were tons of other similarities with man on fire, but man on fire > domino, by a long shot.

Here's my review in case anyone cares ... I gave it three our of five stars for its sheer entertainment value ...

The fabulous life of a bounty hunter

Jake Seaton

Domino
Rating: * * *
Type: Action/Drama
Length: 120 minutes
MPAA Rating: R
Cast: Keira Knightley, Mickey Rourke, Edgar Ramirez, Christopher Walken, Lucy Liu, Mena Suvari
Director: Tony Scott
Playing: Brier Creek, Carmike, Crossroads, Grand, North Hills

My name is Jake Seaton. I am a movie critic. You’re probably wondering how a guy like me arrived here. What I say will determine whether or not I spend the rest of my life in a theater seat. Let’s start from the beginning.

Yeah, you’ve heard “I am a bounty hunter” in a sultry British accent repeated over and over while watching a montage of an equally sultry British woman firing massive guns with her mouth wide open in a scream of adrenaline. However, do you really know what Domino -- director Tony Scott’s (Man on Fire, True Romance) newest manifestation -- is really about. More than likely you have no clue except Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean, Love Actually) plays a tough-ass bounty hunter.

Sad to say, the film’s premise is just as vague in the cushioned seats of a theater as it is watching a two-minute preview in the comfort of your own home.

From what I could pick apart from the debris left behind by jumpy cinematography and grainy film stock, Domino is based on the real life of model-turned-bounty-hunter Domino Harvey…sort of. In the film form of Domino’s life -- penned by Donnie Darko mastermind Richard Kelly and the relatively unknown Steve Barancik -- Domino is played quite well by Knightley. While we’ve typically seen her in softer roles like in Love Actually and Bend it Like Beckham, and fun parts like in Pirates of the Caribbean, Knightley isn’t really recognized for her grittier personas. Let’s be honest here, how many people actually saw The Hole?

Suffice it to say, the film does follow the real Domino’s life enough that it portrays her as the daughter of actor Laurence Harvey who becomes a model then turns to a life of a bounty hunter. But that is where the parallels cease -- as far as we know, the real Domino was not too open about her life. Cinematic Domino is moved to Beverly Hills with her mother because of her mother’s obsession with Beverly Hills, 90210. It is here where a joke begins that is carried on throughout the film -- Domino loathes Beverly Hills, 90210 and she has the grand honor of working with Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering later in her bounty-hunting career.

While she becomes fed up with the Beverly Hills lifestyle, she embraces the rebel lifestyle. This leads her into a bounty-hunters seminar where she has a chance to make her big break. That’s about it for a plot. There’s constant sexual tension between Domino and Choco (Edgar Ramirez) that climaxes in a love scene and, along with Ed (Mickey Rourke), their bounty hunting antics get captured on film for an upcoming reality show.

For those familiar with Man on Fire, Scott embellishes on the cinematic style made so prominent in that film. The screens are gritty, which only adds to the already gritty nature of the film, and the shots are short and choppy, which also adds to the film’s overall tone. Had this not already been expressed through the trailers, it would have made Domino extremely difficult to sit through.

Domino works because it does what Hollywood film intends to do: Entertain. There is enough humor created through Green, Ziering and Christopher Walken’s characters that the hard-edge nature of the film does not become too overwhelming. On the other hand, there is enough in-you-face violence that the film does not drift too far in the light-hearted direction.

Perhaps the plot would have been held together a little better if the film had stayed truer to the real Domino’s life; but then again, it may have been too tough a subject for the typical audience to handle. "
