Quote :
"LONDON (AP) - Daniel Craig was introduced Friday as the first blond James Bond and only the second Englishman to star as Agent 007 in the movie series.

Craig's selection was revealed as he was whisked down the Thames River aboard a military boat to a news conference.

Craig replaces Pierce Brosnan in the role of the suave spy in "Casino Royale," due in theaters next year.

"I'm speechless," the star said, after posing for photos with producer Barbara Broccoli and director Martin Campbell.

"Daniel is a superb actor who has all the qualities needed to bring a contemporary edge to the role," Broccoli and Campbell said in a statement.

Producers announced last year that they were seeking a replacement for Brosnan, who has played Bond in the last four films.

Craig, 37, is the first blond actor to play agent 007. Relatively unknown outside Britain, he has had a busy career that includes roles in the landmark 1990s British TV drama "Our Friends in the North" and films including "The Mother,""Enduring Love" and "Layer Cake."

He played Paul Newman's sinister son in "Road to Perdition," was poet Ted Hughes opposite Gwyneth Paltrow's Sylvia Plath in "Sylvia" and appeared in this year's thriller "The Jacket" with Adrien Brody.

Craig is also the tabloids' dream Bond. He once dated headline-grabbing model Kate Moss and has been linked to Sienna Miller, his "Layer Cake" co-star and on-off fiancee of Jude Law.

Earlier this year, Craig praised 007 as "an iconographic figure in moviemaking."

"I think you'd have to be stupid not to consider something like that," he said, but added that he hadn't given the role "any serious thought."

The film's producers tried to keep their decision secret, but Craig's mother told the tabloid Sun newspaper she was "thrilled to bits."

Ian Fleming's first Bond novel, originally published in 1953, "Casino Royale" is one of the few Bond adventures not to feature the MI6 gadget-maker Q. It was previously filmed as a 1967 spoof starring Peter Sellers.

Before Friday, speculation about the new Bond also included British actors Clive Owen, Ioan Gruffudd, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Gerard Butler and Ewan McGregor, Irishman Colin Farrell and Australians Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger and Eric Bana.

Huge Grant and Colin Firth were candidates? Are you fucking kidding?!?!?

He looks familiar, but outside of Road to Perdition I haven't seen any of his stuff (and I don't recall him from that movie at all).

We'll see how it goes I guess.

^Yeah exactly. Goldeneye was incredible, I loved it. Die Another Die, however, was just plain bad. I don't think this was due to Pierce Brosnan though, he has been a pretty good actor in all the films I have seen him in.

I still like Roger Moore the best of all the Bonds. I will watch this movie over and over just like the rest even if he isnt a good Bond actor.

the ideal new bond would be clive owen

but he didn't want the part

if not brosnan, then Craig will work

Brosnan got shafted with ridiculous plots

he never got his From Russia with Love/Goldfinger/The Spy who Loved Me/For Your Eyes Only/The Living Daylights movie

Goldeneye was great, but the ones after that were disappointing when compared to Goldeneye

Martin Campbell is directing it too, he also did Goldeneye. That was Pierce's best one so maybe this one has a chance. I just hope its more suave like the old ones (Thunderball, GoldFinger) instead of having all that damn CGI

yes, im aware that scotland is part of the united kingdom, i just thought that people still differentiated between scots and brits and even welsh for whatever reason. i've never heard sean connery referred to as british, but always scottish, so i assumed that other people from scotland liked to call themselves scottish. i guess i'm wrong.

oh, and related to the thread, i think james bond should be a chauvinistic womaner who isn't afraid to tell his women to "run along now, man talk" or shove some bitch in the face when she asks him whats for breakfast the next morning, just like the old bond did

British = English + Welsh + Scottish.

Ewan McGregor and Sean Connery are Scottish
David Prowse is Welsh
Daniel Craig is English

All of them are British.

^He kind of reminds me of Christopher Eccleston (See Dr. Who 2005) when his hair is short in those pics.

No you are right, it is just in America that they use the term British. Anywhere else, you are English, Scottish, or Welsh. If for some reason anyone ever needs to know, the difference between the United Kingdom and Great Britain is that GB doesn't include Northern Ireland.

This is kinda the right idea but not. Think of it more as if someone saying "You're a North American." Yeah it is true, you are, but you wouldn't usually describe yourself that way. If you go to England and tell someone they are British, you will probably get a funny look. This mostly stems from deep regionalism. English are very proud not to be Welsh or Scottish, same goes for Scots not being English/Welsh or Welsh not being Eng/Scot. We don't like to be grouped with a common name. Think of it like someone calling you a Canadian or a Mexican.

"Moneypenny and Q Axed from 'Casino Royale'

Producers of the forthcoming James Bond movie Casino Royale have axed the legendary Miss Moneypenny character. Moneypenny, who has waved the suave super-spy off on some of his most perilous missions, been written out of the new film because she only fleetingly appears in Ian Fleming's original novel. Gadget-inventor Q, last played by John Cleese will also be absent from the new film - in which British actor Daniel Craig will play 007 for the first time. The news is the biggest indication the new film will deviate substantially from the spirit of previous Bond adventures. Co-producer Michael G. Wilson confirms, "Neither Miss Moneypenny nor Q will appear. Neither of them are in the book. The film will update the novel but stick very closely to the storyline." "

"Simpson Gets Bond Bosses All Stirred Up

Jessica Simpson is the latest name on James Bond producers' wish list after both Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie pulled out of a Bond babe role in new 007 adventure Casino Royale. Theron and Jolie refused Bond bosses, according to Ign FilmForce, and now they're courting newly-single Simpson to play female lead Vesper Lynd in the new film. Scarlett Johansson has also been linked to star alongside the legendary superspy. British actor Daniel Craig will take over from Pierce Brosnan to make his Bond debut in the film, which is set to start shooting next year."

Wales, Scotland, and England were all distinct countries/kingdoms for hundreds of years, and still have very distinct accents and cultures, although that is something that is beyond most Americans.

texas was a distinct country (and could be again if i understand the state constitution) and was ruled at various times by 5 different countries, and texans certainly have their own accents and customs

immediately between secession and the forming ofthe CSA, several "slave" states were their own nations

for the most part; borders and nationalities are all imaginary in the end

BobbyDigital nailed it. Woodfoot, the comparison between the regionalism of Texas and that of Great Britain isn't nearly the same. It is the same idea, but England, Ireland, and Wales were individual countries for longer then Texas has been known to exist by the white man.
