If we won the national championship, Hillsborough St. would be burnt to the ground, cars would be flipped over, there would be streakers galore, and news vans would be ambushed. Also NC State students would not be as dumb as their UNC counterparts by leaping through fires. Looting would occur instead. I heard that there were a number of those idiots jump into each other and ended up landing into the fire and needed to be treated for 1st degree burns.

Except if we did celebrate on Hillsborough, Tom Stafford would arrest every student, and ban sports at NCSU. Also, instead of wral broadcasting it as 'just rowdy fans having fun celebrating' as with unc, it would be a full-blown riot of hoodlums.

State beating NCAA-bound teams such as Boston College and George Washington, and touted its 21 wins and national ranking that reached as high as No. 12 in early January. To Sendek, it was more than some psychological ploy to inspire the Wolfpack, which is making its fifth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. “It’s truth,’’ Sendek said. “We didn’t fabricate any of the clips we showed them. They actually did all of those things and have enjoyed a terrific season. It’s important that we recognize that we have this wonderful opportunity for the body of work we’ve accomplished, and we don’t isolate our season to the very end. “The only teams who come into this tournament on a win are the ones who actually won their conference tournaments. It’s a fresh beginning. There’s a lot of really good teams with great resumes, teams with 20-plus win seasons, who would give anything to be in our shoes today.’’ The highlights seemed to have had the desired affect as N.C. State arrived in Dallas seeming more confident than it appeared after suffering an 82-71 quarterfinal loss in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament to last-place Wake Forest last Friday. “We know we’re capable of playing much better than we did the last few games,’’ senior point guard Tony Bethel said. “Maybe we forgot how good we were there for a stretch. But we know we’re a quality team and we deserve to be here playing in the NCAA tournament. We also know if we don’t get back to playing that way again we’re not going to be around long in this tournament.’’ The Wolfpack certainly wasn’t around long the last time it faced California in the NCAAs. The Golden Bears ushered N.C. State out in the first round of the 2003 NCAA tournament in Oklahoma City with a 76-74 overtime triumph. Richard Midgley, then a freshman point guard for Cal, sank a 3-point basket with 3.9 seconds left in overtime to lift his team to victory. Midgley, now a senior, is the only Cal player from that squad who’ll suit up for today’s 7:20 p.m. contest against the Wolfpack at American Airlines Arena. The Golden Bears are returning to the NCAA for the first time since then after going 20-10 and finishing runner-up to UCLA in the Pac-10 Conference tournament. “It was funny. On Sunday, when we were watching the selection show I saw N.C. State come up and obviously for me it brought up some real good memories,’’ Midgley said. “They seem to be a very similar team to what we played that year. They run pretty much the same system and they’re a very dangerous team. “But we have changed a great deal since that time.’’ The Golden Bears were more of a perimeter-oriented team in 2003. This year they’ve relied heavily on the play of Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year Leon Powe. The 6-foot-8, 240-pound sophomore led the league scoring (20.7 points) and rebounding (10.0). “Everything we do now runs through Leon,’’ Midgley said. “Our first objective is to get the ball to him.’’ The Wolfpack will try to counter Powe’s power game in the post with 6-9 sophomore Cedric Simmons. Simmons averaged 11.8 points and 6.4 rebounds during the regular season, and was the only N.C. State player to make the All-ACC Defensive team. “He’s a great player and I can’t do the job on him alone,’’ Simmons said. “It’s got to be a team defensive effort. We’ve played great team defense all year. I just want to play hard and try to make him work hard for everything he gets. “All we have to do is think about what we were doing earlier this season. Coach Sendek reminded us how much we deserve to be here. Now, we have to go out and prove it.’’"
