My computer just decides to kick me back to the desktop? It leaves the game running, but I have to click on it in the taskbar to get it to come back up--which it takes anywhere between 5 and 10 minutes to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cuz I got the game for my birthday.

The only thing buggy about it is that it kicks me to the desktop. Everything else works fine, albeit slowly even though my comp meets the recommended system reqs.

Do you have anything else running at the same time that is refreshing in the background or something?

This one is light years different.

BTW did you run the patch? The patch addressed this issue of a glitch causing it to go to desktop. Try and hit that up.

I didn't think the patch was out yet?

I tried closing everything in the bg, but that didn't help. I noticed that NortonAV isn't disabled though.

k, first tell us what your computer stats are. Processor speed, Ram and vid card?

If ya don't know, go to Start--> Run-->

type "dxdiag" click yes if a pop up thing appears asking you to update some info.

Then look at "Processor" and "Memory" and tell us what that says. Then click the tab at the top marked display and tell us what it says in the first box marked "device".

The reason I want to know this is if you are at the bare minimum for requirements then if you're running other things at the same time it could cause issues.

I haven't played the game in over a week or so, but did you try the update option given in one of the menus in the game? I didn't realize there was a patch yet.

There isn't really anything you can do until they fix it, its a problem with the software itself, not your machine.

Play smaller worlds with less AI opp. until they fix things properly.

I patched it, but the problem persists.

New detail. This has happened a couple times now, so you might find it noteworthy:

When I close the game for getting all slow and buggy (usually accompanied by a serious decrease in graphic quality), there's a little triangle with a ! in it down in the systray by the clock that says Virtual Memory Minimum too Low...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but does that mean that I need more RAM? I'm thinking a new video card might be in order, too.

If you guys have suggestions for either, I'm all ears.

You may want to check how much hard disk space you have available. You might not have enough to allow the operating system to cope with this resource hog of a game. I'd say a gig is more than sufficient.

Ok, so after a reformat and reinstallation of XP, I've determined that the main source of what causes the game to crash back to the desktop is this mystery program that opens and closes itself. I only see it in the status bar and it closes itself before I get a chance to identify it.

Is there any way to find out what this program is?

After patching up to 1.09 I noticed it is a little quicker to load, and return from switching to my desktop, and the turns cycle a little faster.

I'm running a 3000+ Venice, 1 gig dual channel, and a pathetic 6200 TC and don't really have many troubles. If I get some time I'll try the new patch on a 6 AI huge map (where I had my troubles before) and see how stable it is now.

The program that opens and closes itself wasn't there immediately after the wipe and reinstall. It has to be from one of the apps that I installed immediately afterwards. That narrows it down to the following:

- Microsoft Office with Frontpage
- AIM Triton
- FinePix Viewer (From my Digital Camera)
- FujiFilm Raw File Converter (Same)
- Pixela Image Mixer (Same)
- HP Software for my printer
- Nero Burning ROM Software
- Quicktime
- Norton Antivirus Corporate
- Adobe Acrobat Reader 7
