^ try not to sweat it too much. once you're in law school, for the most part, it's really hard to flunk out.

Is there any benefit to casually studying the law on your own? I mean, I am strongly considering law school about 18 months from now - 2 years, and I really enjoy all the dynamics of law. When my friend took the bar exam I grilled him afterwards for about an hour about the cases he was presented with and gave him some of my ideas about them based on a lay perspective just to see how accurate I could be. Would it hurt me or be a help to try and find some basic law texts and just peruse them for the fun of it?

Best Advice is when you leave that exam, don't talk to anyone else about it.

Pretend like it never happened and that whatever exam is next is the first one you have to take.

Rinse and repeat. You don't want to start second guessing yourself even if you fucked it up.

As for the casual study of law, I would read legal theory books, but would stay away from case law text books. I think professors prefer to have a clean slate to expose you to reading cases. After exams, I will figure out a few good ones to suggest.

As for exam talk, great suggestion, but few will practice. You just can't let it get to you.

I have one more paper and an open note test. Then I get to finish my bar application and job interview. Yippee

I am surprised the Bar does not want a blood sample or my first born child. They pretty much ask for everything else.

We were pretty good about not talking about the test after the fact, just a couple what the hells on a few of the questions here and there. Glad to have criminal law out of the way that class wasn't my favorite. I've got Torts tomorrow hope it goes well .

Pending grades, I am contemplating transferring. Has anyone done this? or know of anyone who has done this? I was curious as to the number of transfers a school will typically take. I was thinking that it would be the number of students they lost.

What are yalls thoughts on transferring from an ABA approved out-of-state school to a non-ABA approved in-state school? Assuming I want to practice in NC.

i assume, in that case, you're talking about goin from App to Elon.

i wouldn't. App's not great, but a non-ABA approved school might hurt you in the case that you ever DO decide to practice outside of NC.

Ultimately, it's up to you. I only know one person who transferred from our school down to a non-ABA school, and so far she enjoys it, but realizes the risks she's taking.

Yeah, I got good grades, but I don't know if they are good enough to transfer to the aba approved schools that I was considering in NC. I don't feel that the non-aba approved schools in NC would be worth transferring to.

^if you're really thinking about working in NC, i've always thought NCCU is a good deal if you can come out near the top of the class. but that's not always the easiest thing to do.

What is the grading curve like at other schools? Here at App. there is a mandatory grading curve, which for all 1L courses the course GPA can't exceed a 2.5, and for 2L/3L courses a 2.667.

NCCU = 1.67

but that makes my GPA look remarkably good

^ those GPA's are based on the curves they grade on. NCCU grades on a C curve, which is one of the lowest. That is why it appears so low, but if it is below 2.0 at the end of the year, they let you go. That's how we lose 25% of our incoming class on average every year.

No doubt, I really can't stand people with their not so subtle questions just trying to find out if they did better than you.

You pretty much know what the average is, just judge your grades based on that.

I just wish that they would publish the Dean's List already. I know that I am going to be close to the cut off and it would be nice to be able to put that on a resume before sending them out.

thats more or less a doomsday scenario.

that chick is trying to make it in the Northeast... and well, if you didn't go to a top 10 school, you're wasting time and money up there.

its all about the area.

This quote should be on all law school applications, although 40k will get you a lot farther in NC than NYC. From Partial's link:

Quote :
"I’m on a one-woman mission to talk people out of law school. Lots of people go to law school as a default. They don’t know what else to do, like I did. It seems like a good idea. People say a law degree will always be worth something even if you don’t practice. But they don’t consider what that debt is going to look like after law school. It affects my life in every way. And the jobs that you think are going to be there won’t necessarily be there at all. Most people I know that are practicing attorneys don’t make the kind of money they think lawyers make. They’re making $40,000 a year, not $160,000. Plus, you’re going to be struggling to do something you might not even enjoy. A few people have a calling to be a lawyer, but most don’t."

its a great idea

tell everyone NOT to go to law school

because there's only so many jobs to go around

and right now employments isn't great

so the more that are discourage, the safer we are.

ASL is currently thinking about going to a pass/fail 1L year for next years incoming class because there are too many people transferring out. It would be tough to transfer without grades or a class rank.

I really do not understand the concern of students transferring out. There are seriously only a handful of slots available at different schools to transfer into.

What percentage actually transfers out?

I think UNC does something similar, but for competition purposes. They do not rank the students until after the second semester. I could be wrong.

At Campbell, 10-15 kids fail out, but only one or two kids are allowed to transfer in. We do have several visiting students, but they are mostly military spouses.

Supposedly, the 2L class last year had 35 people either fail out or transfer. If an accordance, 15-20 failed and 15-20 transferred, that's a hunk of change lost by the school.
