supposedly this site is reporting that we are going to hire kruger:
http://prephoopsonline.com/fan-access/breaking-news-north-carolina-state-to-hire
i don't have an account there so i can't post the article.
if you search "lon kruger" in the search bar, you can find the following quote from the entry:
Quote : | "Current UNLV coach Lon Kruger should be named as the Wolfpack head coach soon. " |
looks to be a done deal. more sites will probably pick this up by morning sometime.4/18/2006 1:40:42 AM |

from the greensboro news and record (18 mins ago):
Published: Apr 18, 2006 12:30 AM Modified: Apr 18, 2006 02:31 AM
Day 17: News of the day High school results Chip Alexander, Staff Writer Coaches close to Texas A&M's Billy Gillispie said Monday he'll likely stay with the Aggies. Gillispie's team went 22-9, losing in the NCAA Tournament second round to LSU. Four starters return, including Joseph Jones, a high-scoring 6-foot-9 sophomore, and junior guard Acie Law.
BUZZ OF THE DAY
While UNLV coach Lon Kruger's name has popped up as a potential candidate, UNLV athletics director Mike Hamrick says Kruger is staying put. Hamrick, the former AD at East Carolina, also noted that Kruger has a buyout clause in his contract. So does West Virginia coach John Beilein, and it's a big one: $3 million.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"No one from N.C. State has contacted me, and I'm sure Lee Fowler would call me first if he wanted to talk to my coach. Lee is very professional and does things the right way." -- UNLV athletics director Mike Hamrick.

Quote : | "New names surfacing
In recent days, several new names have surfaced as potential candidates for the job. That list of new prospects may be headlined by UNLV’s Lon Kruger. Kruger was once thought to be a prime candidate for the job at Arizona State, where his son, Kevin, led the Sun Devils in scoring last season. But when former N.C. State coach Herb Sendek accepted that position earlier this month, Kruger stayed put in Las Vegas.
The Runnin’ Rebels coach certainly isn’t low on college experience, having been a head coach for 20 seasons at five universities. But for Wolfpack fans hoping their new coach brings more charisma and ambition to the table than Sendek, Kruger would not fit the bill.
While he has been to the Final Four, taking Florida there in 1994, he has notched only seven NCAA tournament wins in his other 19 seasons on the college level. In four seasons at Illinois, Kruger averaged 20 wins but never reached the Sweet 16.
He later compiled a 69-122 record in two-plus seasons as the coach of the Atlanta Hawks and since returning to the college ranks in 2004, he has a record of 34-27 at UNLV." |

UNLV signs 25-year-old forward
ASSOCIATED PRESS
LAS VEGAS (AP) - University of Nevada, Las Vegas basketball coach Lon Kruger has signed 6-foot-5-inch forward Cory Bailey.
Bailey, 25, averaged 17.7 points as a sophomore at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan. The Tampa, Fla. native was the Rebels' lone addition Wednesday, the first day of the spring signing period.
High school seniors Marcus Lawrence and Troy Cage signed in November. The Rebels have one scholarship open and the spring period runs through May 17.
Kruger said Bailey will add versatility and athleticism to his team's offense. He said Bailey is on track to be eligible in the fall. " |

Subpar? Are you serious?
I cant believe I have to do this.
Coaching Stops:
1) Looks like good work at Pan American. There's no need to look too closely at this. What he did at Pan American was ~25 years ago, it was his first coaching experience, and their situation is not the same as ours. But he did win there, so thats a good sign.
2) Very good results at Kansas State. I have no idea what the program was like when he took over but I doubt they were making elite 8 appearances before him. He made the tournament all four years so that's a very good sign.
3) His Florida experience is pretty impressive. He put up solid conference results in the SEC (a major conference) at fucking Florida. He made a FINAL FOUR at a school with no previous success in basketball.
4) His Illinois experience is solid. He posted good overall and conference records in the Big 10. I cant remember exactly what shape Illinois was in when he took over, but I know they were nowhere near elite status... I'm not sure what happened in the '98-99 season, but they bounced back strong the next season so it looks like an outlier.
5) Atlanta Hawks. Who cares. Pitino, Montgomery, and many others have failed in the NBA. The Hawks fielded lousy rosters while he was there because their management sucks. College success/Pro Success are pretty independent anyway.
6) UNLV. Only coached one season. No conclusions to draw since I didnt see the season.
I'm sold. He doesnt make us instant title contenders or anything, but he looks like a solid hire.

You guys are fucking stupid.
You are looking at ONE meaningless stat.
Career wins/losses.
When you evaluate Coach K, how much emphasis do you put on his career record at Army?
This guy has much better results than Herb Sendek, that you can not argue.
I mean he got results at shit schools like Kansas State and Florida. There is a huge difference between taking a perennial doormat like Florida to the Final Four and taking a 2nd tier program like NC State to the Sweet 16.
Not to mention Kruger's Florida team played Duke tough in the Final four while Herb's team shit the bed against Wisconsin(!!!!)
