Im able to enter the the EMS from editing the pif file, but no matter what I set the value to, I always get 0 EMS. Do I actually need an EMS allocated block, or can it be emulated? ideas?

I've kinda run dry on helpful searches. Maybe Im searching for the wrong thing(?)

Yeah, I was pretty sure you'd find it in a few minutes anways. Dosbox is pretty much the first thing to attempt using when running old games. By default XMS and EMS should be set to "true" and that should work fine for many games. check the list of supported games to see if the one you want to use is on it and how well it's supported.

My DOS Box has the following:
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE 16384 HIGHSCAN I=B000-B7FF

YMMV. I haven't tested it against all my old games yet.

Im trying to get the old game Ultima Underworld: the Stygian Abyss to work.

1) Ive got it playing after solving the EMS memory allocation problem {the most common problem}via dosbox.

2) Upon solving that, I thought I had it made till the game crashed when I tried to talk to someone {the second most common problem}.

3)found a patch that fixed this ( http://www.sircabirus.com/ultimaunderworld/pages/index.html Dont mind the ghey music), and now I have no sound {the third most common problem}.

this is becoming more trouble than its worth.

tomorrow Im going to play with it some more and see if I cant get the audio back. I found some helpful stuff on google, but I'm tired of fucking with it for tonight.

Ill keep updates posted

you may just want to find an old pc and use it as an actual dos-box.
