However, the deal was overshadowed by a crisis over the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier and opposition to the deal voiced by Islamic Jihad, a small militant group that has carried out numerous attacks against Israel. "In today's meeting, we announced we reject some of the articles of this document and we have reservations about other articles," said Khaled al-Batch, spokesman for Islamic Jihad. The plan calls for a Palestinian state alongside Israel, in effect recognizing Israel. It also calls on militants to limit attacks to areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast War and calls for formation of a coalition Palestinian government. Hamas and Fatah have been locked in a bloody power struggle since Hamas won legislative elections in January. Hamas controls the parliament and Cabinet. Abbas, a political moderate, was elected separately last year. Israel has said the document is an internal Palestinian matter, but said it falls short of international demands that Hamas renounce violence and formally recognize the Jewish state. With Hamas-linked militants holding a captured Israeli soldier, the Palestinian agreement is even less likely to reduce tensions. Israel has massed troops along its border with Gaza, promising a broad offensive into the area."

Iran is anti-anything foreign. The only thing that unites them (besides religion, and that is even split down the sides) is an invasion from a foreign force.

See Afghanistan as an historical example. Many tribes and rough terrain. Sedendary people always get invaded in that country. The real population stays on the move and fight each other until they come together to expel a common enemy

but, israel has a free hand to violate a sovereign nation's airspace for no reason at all, and that's ok. imagine if an arab country did that. or imagine the fury if it happened to the US.

they have destroyed the central power station in gaza, and fuel supply lines. the city is in darkness, and water and sewage will be cut in a couple of days because of power and fuel stations having been destroyed. that's specifically against the geneva conventions. oh, but it is israel, so that is ok.

of course, in response, some idiots are going to say, but look at the palestinian militants, they don't care about the conventions, so why should the israelis/americans?

but that's the whole essence of the thing. the terrorists, whether they are palestinian, taliban, al-qaeda, or whatever, are seen as terrorists. but america and israel, they have to decide, whether they are sovereign democratic countries, or terrorist combatants.

of course, all their retaliatory actions point to them being just the same as the terrorists.

^ Very true! As soon as that guy is killed, the bulldozers are going to fucking erase any sign of rebuilding that was happening in Gaza, to say nothing of what they'll do with their tanks and artillery units. Many people will die as a result, probably including many people behind the Hamas leadership (including the prime minister who they threatened to assassinate once).

On both sides, there are people who don't give any sort of damn about the people who will die. Just as long as they make it look like they could justify it to their followers and maybe make everyone who died look like martyrs in the meantime, they'll perceive it as a "win" for their side.
