in college football according to SI.com collumnist Stewart Mandel...

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/stewart_mandel/06/28/mandel.mailbag/index.html

I don't think he is one of the 5 worst but he is a shitty coach. He couldn't do anything better than 6-5 regular season with all that talent? And just look at all those stupid ass penalties. And 38 yards of offense in a half? I almost puked.

from dave glenn's blog:

Quote :
" Chuck Amato With DG

At a summer banquet, N.C. State football coach Chuck Amato was asked what word he would like to see banished from the English language.

Amato offered two: "media" and "referees."

Everybody laughed, and the coach smiled. The Q&A was part of a friendly, funny Triangle Pigskin Preview event, so nobody took the answers too seriously. But Amato often has said that he thinks the media doesn't always give his Wolfpack a fair shake.

My first question in a one-on-one interview with Amato this week came with his skepticism in mind (paraphrasing): "Coach, if YOU are the one who gets to write the article about your first six seasons as the head coach at N.C. State, what would YOU write?"

I have written countless articles about Wolfpack football in recent years. I offer my opinions on ACC sports via the ACC Sports Journal, this WRAL.com blog, my Saturday morning show on 850 The Buzz in Raleigh, more than 300 other radio appearances per year throughout the East Coast, etc. Like many journalists, I have plenty of landing places for my opinions. I wanted the coach to have the platform all to himself, without interruption, so he could tell his side of the story.

Rather than sidestepping the question, as coaches often do, Amato offered one of the longest single-question responses of my 20-year journalism career. His answer lasted almost five minutes, which is an eternity in radio, and was filled with passion, exasperation and statistics. Below is Amato's answer to my first question, with the only (minor) editing marked within the coach's quotes.

"Just look at the records. Just look at the statistics. When I came here, everything was compared with the teams in the state; compare us with the other four (Division I-A) teams in the state in the last six years. Compare us. That's the beginning.

"We have been to five bowls in six years, and our record is 4-1. That's a fact. I mean, I didn't make that up. The other four schools have been to five bowls combined in that same time frame, and their record is 1-4. That's a fact. The most number of wins at the other four schools in the last six years is 30, and that's an average of five a year. We've won 46, and that's two shy of eight (victories) a year. I could go on and on. ...

"Somebody told me down in Jacksonville, Fla., that I am the fourth-ranked coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference history in the number of wins after six years. Where we came from, and where we're at? You write the story! I mean, some people won't. You write the story. Write the things that are going on. Obviously, we know what we're doing in recruiting. (Sometimes) we're recruiting too good, because we have an underclassman (Mario Williams) go out and be the No. 1 player picked in America. It goes on and on and on and on.

"I'm not doing that to toot my own horn. You asked me (the question). Why doesn't somebody write what's out there? We were the only team in the entire state of North Carolina last year that went to a bowl game, and we won it! We've been beaten bad probably two times in six years. We've beaten a perennial champion (Florida State) in this league three out of the last five years. We've made steps.

"Now the next step is the tough step. I saw it happen (as an FSU assistant) down in Tallahassee. The next one is the tough one. ... (Talks about last year's close loss to Virginia Tech as an example of being close to the next step.) ... We've accomplished an awful lot. Is it where I want to be yet? No! Absolutely not. It really isn't.

"I don't look up all of that statistical stuff. People tell it to me. I didn't realize the thing about, when they ranked after six years, the winningest coaches in the Atlantic Coast Conference. There's (only) three that won more in (their first) six years than North Carolina State has (won) in the last six years.

"There's an awful lot of positive, positive, positive things that are going on here. I wish some people would write it and talk about it, but sometimes that doesn't happen.""

That was a great response. However it makes me ask this: When he came to NC State, did he say "We are going to be the best in the state" or did he say "We are going to win NC's" or did he say both?

Yeah a little too late now. We ran off a good coach already. If Chuck wouldn't have went to NC State, he would probably already be gone as well.

^If you don't think the fact that Chuck graduated from here is helping his job security you better look again.

Chuck's BEST ACC record is 5-3. Herb had winning ACC seasons 4 out of his last 5 years.

i don't think it has a thing to do with him attending ncsu. i think that may have helped him land the job, but the talent he has brought in and the renewed interest in our football program is what is keeping him his job.

i just wish he'd add some on-field accomplishments to that list as well.

i am seriously tired of hearing the "we ran off Herb" bullshit

yeah our fans gave him a hard time, but ultimately he chose a deal that was best for him financially and suited his value proposition as a "rebuilding coach"

older folks from Duke tell me that K faced the same if not worse criticism during his early years, and he didn't run off

i think the chips have fallen where they were supposed to

Chuck will not be run off in the next year or two because he will outperform expectations. And yes, being an alum has quite a bit to do with how much leeway he gets.

Amato is the third best coach the Wolfpack have had. He's not amazingly great or anything, but to run him off and think we could get someone better(short of Cowher the pipedream) is silly.

Great recruiter and program promoter, relates to fans and alumni and students and generally gets people excited. Needs to keep assistants longer. Needs to improve gameday coaching somewhat.

He's better than the other ACC coaches with the exception of Bowden, Coker, and Beamer.

Then why can't he beat JIM GROBE and fucking Wake Forest?

I don't want Chuck to be gone, but damn he needs to win the games we are suppossed to.

This used to mean something, but today it's not worth jack, especially when you consider you're allowed to count a win against a I-AA team toward your record, and the out-of-conference schedule is usually not difficult. Heck, Troy and Northern Illinois played each other in a bowl game two years ago as at-large teams.

Corso coached when my dad played at Louisville.

He was a goober and nobody took him seriously. He sent recruits to frat parties and could not discipline shit. He was a good recruiter and poor X's and O's coach.

Except when compared to the rest of the coaches in NC, their only claim to be greater than Amato is that they've beaten him. Well who gives a shit when you beat an OK team.... yet they go to a bowl game and you dont. They cant argue schedules, because they can schedule easy teams also OOC, plus UNC gets d00k every year....along with the fact that we've been screwed out of some good OOC opponents.

We'd be bitching if we werent going to bowl games and our only comment about our football team was "well we beat UNC"....cause who gives a shit...they arent a bowl team.

Untill the other teams in the state start winning as many games as CTC, we are going to be the best team in the state. Sure it matters if we lose to Wake and UNC, but if they beat us thats just one leg up they have on going to a bowl, and they still cant manage to make it into one (and there are SOOOO many and they dont mean shit according to some people...so what does it say about your program if you're not making bowl games?)

The point of CTC's rant I think was to point out that the media is puting him on the hot seat and pretending that Bunting doesnt have problems at UNC, when all Bunting has done over the last two years is beat State twice and Miami once, while we're going to bowl games even after losing to UNC and Wake. (Grobe wont be on the hot seat as long as he's competitive at Wake because they just dont have anything to offer to recruits except pt.)

My dad was at Louisville when Corso was there.

He was a great recruiter and was considered a "young and vibrant" replacement to legendary Louisville coach, Frank Camp.

However, he played cupcake teams and therefore "looked good" to the school, but failed to get national respect they deserved. One interesting thing he did was put American flags on the helmets during Vietnam.
