The Padres GM Towers was quoted as saying he is very confident Alfonso Soriano will sign in SD. This pretty much dispels any Peavy trade rumors and also makes more sense of the Barfield for Kouzmanoff deal.

The Mets are working on acquiring the pieces for a Dontrelle Willis trade. They have the pitching prospects but are working on possibly acquiring one more outfield prospect to attempt it..

$3M is like pocket change with the revenue stream the Mets now have. I have no problem with that.

They also signed El Duque for 2 years @ $3M each. A bargain if you ask me and he stays healthy...

Ramirez stats over the last 3 years:

.318 avg / 36 HR / 103 RBI
.302 avg / 31 HR / 92 RBI
.291 avg / 38 HR / 119 RBI

Plus he plays a better than average 3B. This puts him among the premier 3B in baseball, I'd say top 5, if not better. Compare that to what the other top guys are getting paid and he's a bargain, considering the huge lack of free agent depth this year. He probably would have gotten at least 20 if not 30 million more in the open market

I wouldn't say his average is really declining. The year he hit .318 was more of an outlier compared to his career average of .279. And compared to that average he hit above it last year anyways. Plus, the difference in hits between the last few years isn't really a whole lot when you use the same AB. See below (let's just use 550 AB as an even number)

2004: .318 avg - 175 hits
2005: .302 avg - 166 hits
2006: .291 avg - 160 hits

I don't think you can really look at those numbers and claim that he is significantly declining. I mean 6 extra hits is just 1 hot week. 15 hits is maybe 1 less slump or a good hot month. Yeah it makes a bit of a difference, but not one that makes you that much less valuable.

Also, he had a career year in walks last year w/ 50. Yeah, he had a few more at bats than he's normally had, but if we break that down similar to above, there's really no difference, and no way you can legitimately say he's walking less.

Red Sox are set to sign Drew to a 4 year $48M contract. So $12M a year? That works out to about 500k for every game he'll be healthy enough to play.

** oh and for those who remember it last year metsblog.com is doing the Hot Stove thing again and he has good connections at the Winter Meetings (start Dec. 4th).. it's obviously going to be Mets heavy but I think people liked the way he covered the other teams too last year.

As for the JD Drew pickup, I think the Sox are paying way too much for him. Plus I think he is a crappy fit for what the Red Sox really need (i.e. speed, defense, and reliability). He is a high OBP guy though when he plays so if he stays healthy, he can certainly help, but I think they could have done better at 12 M a year than him.

Love the idea of that deal for Peavy, but I wonder who the Braves will use/get for 2B. I guess they can give Tony Pena Jr a shot there or maybe Aybar, but I don't know.

HoRam sucks because he is just a change speeds pitcher who doesn't change speeds very well, gets hurts alot, and can't strike anyone out. Saltamacchia sucked this year, but was still considered a future star and had no place with the Braves since LaRoche and McCann both proved their worth.

TORONTO (AP) -- Frank Thomas and the Toronto Blue Jays finalized a two-year, $18 million contract on Friday.

The Blue Jays reached a tentative deal with the 38-year-old designated hitter Wednesday night and spent Thursday wrapping up the details.

The contract includes a $10 million option for the 2009 season.

Thomas led the Oakland Athletics with 39 homers and 114 RBIs last season, batting .270. In 17 big league seasons, he has hit .305 with 487 home runs and 1,579 RBIs.

A couple things coming out of the winter meetings.

Jason Schmidt has reportedly signed a 3 year $47MM deal with the Dodgers.

The Mets are in discussions about acquiring recently turned 25 year old Rich Harden from the A's. The names being discussed include Lastings Milledge, Aaron Heilman, and/or Oliver Perez. This would take the Mets out of the Zito sweepstakes likely.

Rumor out here is Mike Piazza will sign with the A's for a 1 year $8-9MM deal to be DH and fill in at C when Kendall needs a rest.

A few more things (some are a bit old, but never showed up in this thread, and there are others, but I don't feel like scouring to find them all):

1) Greg Maddux and the San Diego Padres neared agreement Tuesday night on a $10 million, one-year contract.

The deal for the four-time Cy Young Award winner would contain a $6 million player option for 2008. The price of the option would increase incrementally up to $10 million if Maddux pitches 200 innings.

2) The Boston Red Sox reached a preliminary agreement Tuesday with shortstop Julio Lugo that would pay him $36 million over the next four years.

3) The Red Sox reached a preliminary agreement Tuesday with Drew on a contract that could bring him $70 million over the next five years. Although Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein stressed that Drew has not yet taken a physical, he told reporters that Drew is earmarked for the No. 5 spot in the batting order behind David Ortiz and Ramirez.

4) The Rangers crossed off the first of their two biggest must-dos on their list when right-hander Vicente Padilla agreed to a three-year contract worth $33-$34 million with a club option for a fourth year and $15 million, sources said late Monday.
