Yes, this subject matter comes up daily on every message board, and I'm doing it today.

I was over there checking out Statefans and read this comment:

On the surface, this seems fine. But it seems like every minute positive thing that ever happens to either the football or basketball team is justification for having the highest hopes possible, regardless of the situation and without comprehending.

Sure, our bball team has been a pleasant surprise.....and this is the key to this whole post....[b]thus far[b]. But that doesn't say dick about where we are headed, and the reality of the situation is, seeing what Sidney has done in few games isn't enough to make any predictions about the future.

Yet half of Wolfpack nation already has the guy on the pedestal; already has the bar set stupidly high. They already think were going to be UNC and Duke killers in 2 years with this recruiting class that has verbaled so far (never mind the fact that UNC and Duke continue to recruit). Without trying to be political about it, NCSU bball and football fans are the George Bush of college athletics. We create a reality for ourselves, and then get pissed off and refuse to believe that reality.


My advice? Just be patient for a bit. Yea, it's nice the team has a couple early wins, but will you be saying that in 4 weeks when our exceedingly thin amount of depth is already run down barely into the meat of the ACC schedule? Or will you be stuck in the reality you created for yourself when you saw one or two positive things happen on the court?

The problem is holding the bar up to UNC and Duke. UNC and Duke should be ignored and never used as a barometer for NC State. If we are on their level or better we are the best program in the nation. That is asking too much. We can be a great program without being on Duke and UNC's level.

You are the exact people I am talking about. It's still way too early to make a prediction based on the 5-0 start thus far.

The same people that have him on the pedestal are the same ones that will throw him under the bus. I'm not saying he isn't going to be successful. Not at all. I'm just saying it is way too early to tell.

The same people that acted like God descended from heaven and touch NCSU football when D. Evans threw up that miracle. It just looks stupid to be so blind to the reality that "hey, there is a reason he was the backup QB, there is a reason our O Line still sucks" etc etc..

I think that he is attempting to say that some of the fanbase is so high on an unrealistic expectation that Grant is going to be able to compete with Singletary and that after tomorrow when we lose, maybe, and then a couple of other ACC shut downs, then this fan base which is creating a fantasy world will come crashing down from their endorphin high and start hating Lowe.

Sid has done better than anyone expected so far in terms of both sideline coaching and recruiting. The players are playing harder than they ever did under Herb and he already has two good recruiting classes lined up (and I sort of doubt they'll decommit if JJ Hickson said Sid was like a father figure to him aftert 5 weeks, it sounds like he knows what he's doing). I don't think anybody's expecting a national championship at this point, only that maybe this thing will turn out better than we all expected.

Blind Hate makes some good points, but NC State hasn't won an ACC Championship since 1987. You can't blame the fans for dreaming. We are so desperate for hope that we can't help ourselves.

I don't agree with the thread title but a lot of what he is actually saying is true. I guarantee that when we do lose a game or two in a row (which WILL happen this year with our depth) people will be outraged because they are basing their expectations off of 5 games against mediocre to bad teams. Not everyone of course but there will be quite a few people.

I'm taking every win this year as just that. A win. I think Sidney will do a great job here but we are not far enough along to guage how good a coach he is and it is unfair to predict and expect certain barometers of success...
