ben94gt and I mined my engagement emerald in hiddenite, NC. We had the lapidary cut and set it. I couldn't have asked for anything more!

How long were you dating to get to "about damn time" I was almost 7 years in before popping the question. Wedding is on June 26.

^ may I ask how old yall were when you started dating? I'm assuming (and please correct me if I'm wrong) that yall were in college probably 20 or so in which case waiting 7 years to propose would make sense.

I met my boyfriend when we were 27 and have been dating for 2 years. Obviously we're not in a huge rush but I'm also not wanting to wait until I'm 40 start trying to have kids. More like 32/33 for me.

I think it definitely varies depending on age. I know if we met when we were younger he would definitely hold out more to get engaged. But since we'll both be 30 next year we're planning on getting the ball rolling soon.

yea we were 20/21 when we started dating so 26/27 now. next year i'll be 28 (vomit. i think i just vomited haha...too oldddd)

luckily the kid clock thing isn't really a problem for me as i am pretty undecided about kids and don't feel the time crunch for having them. i don't care if i am 35 when i have kids. and i also (i know this will get me bad looks) don't really necessarily 100% believe that marriage MUST be a precursor to kids. but really, i don't care if i am an "old" mom. i mean if i decide on kids i'd like to have them before 40. but i don't care if it is in my mid-30s.

i actually don't really care that much about marriage...in the traditional sense anyway. i mean "marriage" in that it denotes commitment and a shared life together, yea. but "marriage" as in a wedding and the whole shebang...could take it or leave it. i mean, yes both would be fun and great but i'm really looking for the first, not the second. so basically, some sort of token of commitment (not meaning a ring or a wedding or anything, but something...living together, planning for/discussing the future, words, actions, etc - a shared life...a marriage, in my eyes) is definitely something i'd like to have!!

^^ hahah i thought so - most of my friends who waited 5+ years to get engaged were normally were young when they met and wanted to make sure they started their career/was settled, etc. that's awesome though that yall have been together so long. congrats!

^ the older i get, the less i want a big, traditional wedding. i wouldn't mind doing something destination and keeping it on the smaller scale. it's my father who wants the big party.

^ gf and I have been dating for 5 years (since 18) and she is pretty understanding that it will be after grad school and at least a year of work before she gets a rock. So, we'll be at about 7-8 years.

i agree. in theory a big party sounds fantastic, but then when you witness other people's weddings and people planning theirs you realize that sometimes they are more of a hassle and that you don't really get to fully enjoy them. i mean some work out for sure, but i've just heard horror stories. i like the idea of destination weddings (though they come with complications of their own). i know a couple that did a cruise (not really my style UNLESS it was an Alaskan or Mediterranean cruise hehe). and another one did a cruise and a lot of their guests went to the wedding on the ship, reception after while regular passengers were boarding, then deboarded before the ship embarked....and their close friends/fam cruised with them. that is kinda neat, too. you have the opportunity to do coupley things and then if you wanna party with your fam/friends they are right there!

i swore up and down to my dad that i'd wear my HUGE poofy ballgown deb dress as my wedding dress. now i look at it like "meeehhhhhh." it is still a beautiful dress, but its just an example of how my fairytale ending has changed. at first it was the cinderella story wedding. now i'm like, i just wanna be with the people i love and have fun - and i don't care if that is in my backyard eating fried chicken.

/THREAD HIGH JACK OVER we can now go back to discussing rings

I know this thread is about wedding rings, which my question is not about, but hear me out...

I've narrowed down my choices to two rings... Ruby and Sapphire. I don't know which one to get (I'd get both if I was a baller, lol).

Of these two, which is your preference? I'm more curious what the "general" population thinks of these... Thanks

i love the blue sapphire but it looks identical to Princess Di's engagement ring/now Kate's engagement ring.

i would go with the ruby only because i like the balance of the red against the white diamonds.

Who do all of you have your rings insured through?

I need to get insurance on this ring ASAP in the Raleigh/Durham area.

Thx!

Buy used, tell her you got it from a jewelry store if she asks.

Or just completely skip the thing. Ring pop FTW.

I personally love vintage engagement rings and would love to have one that has a story attached to it. Maybe I am in the minority in this case...

Have you checked out Joint Venture Jewelry out of Cary? I always see beautiful things on there and they have have a pretty good testimonial site.

Ask a woman to marry you, then lie about where the ring came from if she asks?

If she is the type of woman that would have an issue with getting a ring that somebody else has worn, then don't get her a pre-owned ring. But many women will not be bothered by it and will actually like the idea. If you think she might be creeped out because it's an estate piece or something, then try asking some of her close relatives/friends if they agree.

But definitely, definitely do NOT outright lie to her about where it came from. Sure, she may never find out, but it's a crappy way to begin an engagement and marriage. I would say I'm surprised it was even suggested (multiple times...) but this is the wolfweb.

We talked about this a while back and she mentioned that she wants a square-ish cut aquamarine in a silver-colored setting. I've seen that several of the sites have wonderful selections of diamonds, but is there a site or store better suited to less-rare gemstones?

Example, though it's out of my price-range for sure.
