WHAT: Student Walk Out Against the War
WHO: Raleigh students from Green Hope High School, Enloe High, Raleigh Charter, Cary High School and NC State University already organizing to walk-out.
WHEN: Tuesday, March 20th, 11am
WHERE: Walk-Out then Converge at NC State Univ. Bell Tower on Hillsborough St.

March leaves Bell Tower 11:30. March down Hillsborough St through Brickyard at 11:45. Permitted Rally at Free Expression Tunnel starting at 12noon.

Over 70 colleges and high schools are participating in the SDS call to Walk-out to Stop War this coming Tuesday. Please join us!

Read the SDS call:
The war in Iraq is entering its fifth year. Despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of citizens want the war to end, despite the fact that U.S. forces are being defeated by the Iraqi resistance, Bush recently announced plans to send 21,500 more troops to Iraq. These troops are being committed to fight and die in an unjust war based on lies and greed. Four years is four years too many. The Iraqi people want the foreign occupiers out. They know the U.S. government is not a "liberator," but whose presence means only continued violence, death, and destruction.

We, students and young people here in the U.S., support the right of the Iraqi people to self-determination. We refuse to accept this new strategy to "expand the military," and reject any means the government may use to make these new troops materialize - whether through the implementation of a draft or the continued use of manipulative and deceptive recruitment techniques. We refuse to be subtle in our outcry against this war, we refuse to do nothing and be silent while people are killed in our name for profit for the rich and we refuse to be sent overseas in a war for oil.

This past November, 100 students from twenty different college campuses came together at a Students for a Democratic Society meeting in Ft.Benning, GA and unanimously decided that March 20th be declared a national day of student and youth resistance against the war! SDS is calling on all students and youth to get out in the streets, get involved and get organized against this war! We, the students and youth of this country, are taking an active stand against US imperialism and fighting for a better world. We reject this war of greed and profit, and are walking out of our classes and taking to the streets in protest!

FIGHT THE WAR MACHINE - GET ORGANIZED, GET INVOLVED, AND GET IN THE STREETS!

For fliers or more info about participating schools please visit http://raleighfist.wordpress.com

We are hoping to kick of the formation of a new SDS chapter at NC State!

I was talking to coworkers who went to those highschools about this. It is the dumbest idea ever. How is it convincing to someone that you care about an issue when you stop yourself from doing something you don't like doing anyway? That's the equivalent of me saying I'll stop doing my chores or my homework until the soldiers come home. What a sacrifice!!!

Thats a pretty blatant ruse to get minorities involved in your anti-war effort.

Now let me get this straight - you're opposed to capitalism?

What is capitalist about taxing the rich to kill the poor? Don't they understand the rich need the poor to work in the factories for low wages?

how bout instead of marching for something with a negative connotation to it, you march for something with a positive one such as a march to support the troops? and don't say that those against the war are also those who support the troops cause in most cases that is completely wrong.

I'd be very interested in how it is that "true liberation" can only come from government enforced collectivism.

Nothing shows the war-mongering-powers-that-be how you feel like skipping Calculus.

^^ There will also be picket signs, and hopefully some sort of rhyming anti-war slogan that can be chanted after an ill informed college student makes a mediocre speech about imperialism.

Punch and pie.

So, back when I was in ROTC-- these guys did their part in protesting the war by staging a "sit in" or something in the brickyard where we were doing our marching practice.

Basically they just sprawled themselves all over the place like fools so we couldn't march. (We were teaching the younger cadets how to call commands, etc.)

I don't really care about their views on 'the war' but they're too dumb to realize that the troops don't decide to fight the war; they just protect America and carry out the orders of the President. WE AS AMERICANS elect the President, so if they could figure out how that works, maybe they'd just go pester people at the polls or something.

Mindless protesting worse than mindless voting.

[Edited on March 19, 2007 at 9:20 PM. Reason : ps I'm not in ROTC anymore, nor currently associated with the military in any way]

This reminds me of the don't go to work or school day for immigrants last year....but a lot worse. I'm not a fan of the war, but don't want to go anywhere near a socialist organization. But you should definitely stop by the brickyard. I'm sure you would get along great with the folks doing agricultural awareness week.

how about everyone instead of walking out of class, take 30 minutes and write your state and federal representatives a letter expressing your feelings about the war and how he/she is addressing them in their respective legislative bodies.

^^Because that would take time and actual effort. On the other hand, anybody can just walk out of some boring-ass class or job, bob signs with rhetorical slogans up and down, and shout out buzz words that have something to do with equality and peach and love.

Besides, do most people even know who their state senators/representatives are?

Considering that this is the fourth anniversary, then, yes, we are going into the fifth year, as the post states...

I am glad that you all have yet to make one argument that discredits my post. The homophobia really exposes your political and philosophical maturity.

for those who say we are contradictory, why did you not state what it was that we said that was contradictory.

and no, I do not just sit at the coffee shop and on the internet all day (which it appears that most of you might) but rather I am in the streets, talking to people. visiting workers on their job and ORGANIZING.

wake up, yall. this system is not built for us, students/workers. it is built for the rich to keep getting richer off our labor and the labor and resources of people all over the world. that is what this war is really about. this war is about profit. it is not about protecting you.

by the way, we completely support active, reserve and retired military personel in their relationship to the system. you are not being taken care of and we fight to defend your life and so that you ge tthe medical and all benefits you deserve. why is it that veterans are such a huge portion of the homeless population? because Bush, the democrats and the rest of the political class, does not take care of veterans or active duty soldiers. y'all heard of post-traumatic distress? when has this ever been treated?

ps. I am not a democrat. they are a party of the rich also.

and, joshua, yes liberation came from self determination and freedom of choice, as we support.

pps. The people did not elect George Bush. I cannot believe you still think this.

Your problem is that you are looking at the world through the same rich/poor dichotomy that existed during the progressive era and spawned such outdated notions as socialism. Look at your last post - the entire thing is attempting to create two category world of "the rich" and "workers." College is accessible to everyone and scholarships are available to everyone. No matter how much you hate to admit it, social mobility is a ubiquitous part of the modern capitalist nation. The easy accessibility of white collar jobs is one of the key factors in the decline of socialism in western europe in the 60s and 70s.

Find me one successful socialist country. I'll point out that social security, America's largest socialist project, threatens to bankrupt the nation in the next 30 years. While it may work on paper internet blogs, the simple fact is that socialism does not work in a world ruled by chaos theory. More people have died of famine under socialism than fascists or capitalists could ever dream of killing.

If you want to be anti-war, then by all means, be anti-war. Of course, thats a contradiction in itself. If "the system" is not built for you and serves only the rich, how do you expect skipping class to convince the powers that be that the war is unjust?

Quote :
"and, joshua, yes liberation came from self determination and freedom of choice, as we support."

You're advocating socialism, which you want to paint as both freedom of choice and government enforced collectivism. You can go start a little socialist community somewhere, but don't try to take away my freedom of choice and tell me that I should live under your rules.

I'll say it again: after looking over your rhetoric its impossible for me to think of you as anything more than some dumb shit college kid who thinks that he knows more than jack shit about the real world.

hahahaha i love it

socialists don't seem to realize that RICH PEOPLE GET RICH BY WORKING THEIR ASSES OFF.

Why should HARD workers be "brought down" while the lazy, unambitious sheep in our society get reap the benefits of those who WANT to excel?

The overwhelming number of "rich" people get there through hard work, dedication, experience and good budgeting/investing.

no way man

the rich are just fortunate

the poor are poor because of bad fortune

like they scratched off a lottery ticket that said, "too bad, you're gonna suck at life now no matter what decisions you make"

has nothing to do with the fact that they've continually made bad decisions that put them where they are

but socialists like pushing these little key words like that into everyones vocabulary

I wouldn't bet on that. Socialists have a bit of an edge in overall deaths I bet, but the fascist-capitalist alliance deserves respect. Hitler's government alone killed many, many millions by some accounts. Capitalist imperialism in Africa probably killed tens of millions. King Leopold's Congo alone likely killed ten million. The same for Shiang Kai-shek's China.
