I second the westinghouse. It retails for 1,999.99$, but newegg.com has it on sale for 1,399.99$.
1080p 47" with great reviews. 1200:1 contrast is a plus too, unless you can find a 1600:1 lcd.

^vizio is a great brand too. Although i think that model is discontinued because thier website doesn't have any lcds bigger than 47". Or is it a model to be released?

I just got a look at the Westinghouse today, and while it's not a terrible TV, the picture quality is obviously below the Samsung/Toshiba/Philips in its price range (which are smaller TVs).

Samsung has their 40" 1080p on sale this week for 1799 or 1999 (for the glossy finish).

I've not seen the Vizio, but I would imagine they're in the same class as the Westinghouse.

after adjust the settings to what avsforum showed... it has incredible quality. looks the same as any of the high-end tv's and it doesn't put a huge dent in my pocket.

I am interested in getting a thin profile TV (to go on the wall/take up as little space as possible) as an upgrade from my super old 27" tube. I was leaning towards a 42" 720p/1080i plasma and I am now wondering how the picture quality of this 42" 1080p Vizio compares to a good 42" Sammy plasma or equivalent in the near 1 grand price range?

I'm not an overly critical image quality person, just wanting something that will make football/bball season nicer so I can have peeps over to my place instead of being forced out to bars anytime we want to watch the game on a decent screen.

^^Hd is only broadcast as 720p/1080i so you shouldn't have an image issue there. If you have a blueray/hd-dvd and want 1080p, then i'd get the 1080p 42" instead. Just depends on how much you want to spend.

go to a bookstore and read the consumer reports magazine on plasma and lcd tvs. they recommended panasonic or plasma and sony for lcd over all others and to stay away from westinghouse. i'm in the market for a new plasma tv too.

they also said that in a 42" tv, you cannot tell the difference in the picture between 720/1080i and 1080p. there's a pretty big price jump b/w the 2 and unless you go bigger than 46" you can't tell a difference anyway.

^ Consumer Reports often doesn't know what they're talking about, and this is one of those cases.

You can tell a difference between 720 and 1080 42" TVs, and Pioneer makes the best plasma (and they are clearance now, so the prices are very good).

Panasonic does have a well-priced 1080 plasma though that's pretty good.

AT WHAT VIEWING DISTANCE?! Christ, neodata. Sure, standing at 5 ft while the salesman treats you like an idiot, you definitely can tell a difference in 1080p and 1080i or 720p. But at 10ft, which is what a more typical viewing distance is, at 42" contrast ratio is a lot more important than resolution.

I mean, maybe you're that guy that sits 4 ft away from his screen as he yells at the faggot on the other end of the mike during Halo, but that isn't me.

The listed contrast ratio of any video display is a poor metric for determining image quality. The only way to know whether something is good or not is to see it for yourself (or have someone you trust see it).

It's IMPOSSIBLE to know if a display looks good based just on its resolution/contrast ratio/brightness measurements.

im for westinghouse TX-47F430S because:

1) the prices are reasonable - not rock-bottom like the vizios, but great for what you're getting
2) the 4 HDMI inputs and VGA input are all 1080p capable (most competitors are not)
3) 1 to 1 pixel mapping - this is primarily useful for those who plan on connecting a PC
4) Uses the Trident processing chip (SOC)
5) has a USB port for firmware upgrades

unless you're the fucking 6 million dollar man, 1080p won't make much of a difference to you on a 40-46" tv from 8-10ft away.

also, Vizio is not a good brand. The picture looks alright, esp. for the price, but those fucking things run hotter than an '88 camaro. Don't know about you guys, but I wouldn't want that to be the case for a $1000+ purchase.

Consumer reports doesn't know what they're talking about a lot of times, as they rate Panny as the best plasmas. Go to a CC or BB and look at the detail in the panny vs. samsung or hitachi. Pan gets its as handed to it.

I don't know about the plasmas but I bought a 50" Panasonic LCD THREE YEARS ago and still think my picture is better than most of the tv's i'm seeing in the show rooms today. It's a great set with a beautiful, crisp picture...even with the technology still being relatively new. Personally, I think LCD blows plasma out of the water anyway, but to each his own
