i didnt want to make a brand new guitar thread for a simple question but all hte other ones were too old to bump :/. maybe people can keep this one bumped, or use it for other guitar questions so this thread isnt wasting space.

Right now im running an '83 Ibanez Roadstar(that ive put a decent bit of money into) through a Mesa. I love the sound for what i normally play and what my band writes/plays. However, I have the guitar set up for C(everything just dropped 2 whole steps) and thus it does not like to be in standard tuning.

ive played for 5 years or so but without any lessons. Im starting lessons tonight after work on some theory, scales, arpgeggios yadda yadda yadda, however at work I realized they might want me to have a guitar in standard tuning for lessons. I didnt even think of this until just now because my guitar is always in C 24/7 for the band.

Basically, to make a long story short, im looking for suggestions on a decent guitar to have around to keep in standard. Probably a strat. Looking for something with a decent rock sound (think smashing pumpkins). Note tho, that this guitar is not going to be a show guitar or a serious one, i already have my main guitar. Im looking for something for like 200 bucks tops maybe, but something that is not a piece of crap. any suggestions that i can keep in the back of my mind while looking around would be helpful.

I'd say to go ahead and drop $400 for a Mexican Strat or Tele. I think the cheapest ones are kind of assy, but I've seriously had and played my cheapass Mexican Stratocaster for 13 years and it still kicks ass.

^^ good deal ill look into what i can afford soon

^ no i dont think it would be hard in the least. i mean think of tuners, it takes like what 10 bucks (retail value not at cost) worth of simple electronics to read exactly what note you are playing? thats the only recognition you need too really. i think they just feel it would have a much more limited audience

make it "Guitar Hero Extreme: Gonna Kick Your Ass Up and Down the Stage" thing or something

I would totally buy a system, game, and guitar just for the opportunity to learn how to rock out while playing a video game

i would pay...

$700-1000 whatever, if I could get all that action going down

man you may be onto something for sure, id patent this if theres still room for a patent for something like this (this may be out there for computers or something i really dont know)..itd be an awesome way to teach kids to play guitar. instead of videos where you just play along or readings tabs..combine it into one with a metronome and such and it scores the kid and decides when he is ready to move onto the next scale, chord, etc. At the end of each lesson/level whatever after the student has learned a set of scales/chords etc. it could unlock song riffs that use those things you learned to play along to

find a $ backer and we'll work something out

I've never liked the looks of the beveled Rics for some reason, but I really like the 330. I've played a bunch, though, and they just feel too fragile for me to play on a regular basis.

If you are looking for pumpkins sound, I know the Billy Corgan's main guitars are Strat's so...but I think that is kinda strange for straight ahead rock. He plays them through all kinds of fuzz effects (Fender Blender, etc..)...stats are awesome guitars though...I just think most straight up rock is like..tele's or les paul's or something..

anyone own a 335??

I had a 335, but it was too cumbersome, which is why I switched to the Thinline with humbuckers. I've since sworn off humbuckers, but it's a nice compromise other than the scale length (and since it's a Tele, I suppose getting a 24 3/4 neck for it would be pretty simple).

Maybe, but I'd sacrafice sturdiness for the range of sounds you could produce with a stereo signal.

Really, the only thing you need for a basic SP sound is a Big Muff. You can get Strats with Lace sensors and Bogner amps and all that shit, but the Big Muff is the heart of the early '90s SP sound.

The stereo on a Ric is cool and all, but I'm a simple guy. Give me a big hunk of wood (Tele or Junior) with a single coil pickup in it and I'm good to go.

Got one. that and a Vox wah. most of the time, i just use amp overdrive.

have a BOSS processor (floor type), but i don't use it much.

i've got a '91 Gibson Firebird, an old Gretsch Corvette, and a Mexi-Strat. Amp is a 60W, 3 channel Peavey Triumph...but I'm selling it and getting a Hot Rod Deluxe.

[Edited on July 27, 2007 at 1:17 AM. Reason : or maybe hot-rodding the Peavey...i don't know]

^ If you get a Deluxe, make sure you find one with the Jensens. It's about $150 more, but it's worth it.

Just curious, are you doing any gigging? 40W is a still a ton if you're not. There are some nice choice available in that price range that are 18/32W switchable or, in the case of the Orange Tiny Terror (it's a head, though), 7/15W switchable. If you want an amp with awesome drive that won't blow your ears out, there's always the AC15.

if anyone is looking for a crate gx-212+ dual speaker 120W amp, i'm getting ready to put mine up for sale. this thing is a monster for jamming and makes a great amp for small-venue gigs

I'm also going to sell my old epiphone sg and pick up a schecter omen or 006 diamond series.

yea i need a new cab too unfortunately now. im looking at either a marshal or a matching mesa, this might have to take priority over getting a second guitar atm :/

my peavey cab (that i kept when i traded my 5150 head in for credit on the mesa) just had a caster break and it also has been buzzing really bad with the new mesa head (i borrowed other people's cabs the last 2 shows and didnt have a problem with any buzzing, and it doesnt buzz using our other guitarist's mesa cab at the practice space).

besides having to spend the money, a mesa or marshall cab would sound much better, so i guess thats a plus side to it.

They have really great bass response because of the way they're built and Celestion Vintage 30s just like the Mesa cabinets...so I dunno.

One of my buddies has an Edwards LP, and it's a nice guitar, but not my thing. Definitely better than an Epiphone LP, but I'm not sure if it's $300-400 better.

Still have my '97 G&L Legacy running through a Peavey Classic 30.

Question--who would y'all recommend for getting work on a guitar done? I've noticed recently that a couple of the springs on the bridge of the G&L are kind of corroded, and I figure while getting those replaced it would be a good idea to get a "checkup" done, make sure that things like truss rod adjustment and whatnot are still in good shape. I've heard good things about Harry's on Glenwood, opinions or alternatives?

bah http://greenville.craigslist.org/msg/385641264.html

i wish i made even a little bit more money haha. that guitar is a HUGE steal if it is in good playing condition. that guitar is generally about 700+ from any music store new with 250 worth of pickup work put into it for only 550 bucks.

still got a couple hundred left to pay on my head and looking for a cab tho >.< i have a little bit of money in savings but eh not worth it for a guitar

oh and btw http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-RG1570-Electric-Guitar?sku=519965
thats the MF item info

Go to Harry's. They'll take care of you.

It's finally time for me to do a little restoration job on my '66 Mustang...it needs new pickup selector switches, new pots, and a new whammy bar (because the strings go under the tailpiece, you basically need the whammy bar to even change them). StewMac to the rescue!

BTW, is anyone interested in a set of Sperzel in-line tuners that are polished chrome instead of brushed? I've never seen a set like them, but they were put on my old Alvarez Strat copy when I was in eighth grade.

using new strings for the first time in awhile. ive used standard elixirs for a long time, even in C-standard tuning. But ive heard a lot about the Zack Wylde GHS strings for awhile now. Picked up a pack this weekend and tested em back to back with a full set of my normal elixirs and a full set of slinkys: they really sounded beast. They are 10-13-17-36-52-60 gauge.

I didnt like the feel of the .60 for my 'E' (C) string so i messed around and ended up with what i thought was my best sounding setup which wound up being the .52 gauge 'A' (F) string from the Zack Wylde set as my 'E' String, the elixir 'E' as my 'A', then from there on out it was the 36-17-13-10 from the zack wylde set.

the playability is down a little bit from using standard gauge as can be expected...but these strings are also brand new and not worn in. They sound REALLLY full. pretty stoked to see how they sound at our next show.
