so i attempted a 3mi run today at the gym in preparation for my tri... and im reminded why i dont like running as much as other activities

however, i should be able to run 3mi a lot faster than i did (or didnt) today. i gave myself 30min and i still couldn't hack it. oh well, gotta keep trying!

I was absolutely assaulted by horseflies at Umstead tonight.

One chick was freaking out, and a number of people were carrying branches with leaves to constantly swat at them.

I'll be avoiding Umstead for a while.

^there's a facebook app for iphones etc. that i hear is pretty cool. It posts a status update when you start your run that says how long your run is planned to be, and the app reads out the comments through the headphones whenever anyone posts on the status.

haven't used it myself though.

Thanks for the suggestions. Mostly I'm interested in the mapping feature where you can plot a route and determine distance.

I don't normally carry my phone while running--I don't want it to become sweat-salt encrusted like my MP3 player

I'm going crazy not being able to run or play basketball, or do anything that requires ankles. I still have my bike, but this twisted ankle is such a pain in the ass.

i meant to get up early this morning to go for a run, but then i heard my parents (i'm visiting them) talking shit about me so i just slipped further under the covers and stayed there. now i'm pissed, but i'm even more pissed i didn't run. i'll go when it's a little cooler out this evening.

i ran 6.5 miles this morning w/ my dad's galloway group and HOLY CRAP i love galloway

why didn't i discover this sooner?

my TNT training schedule was only for 5 miles this week which about killed me last week but this week i did 6.5 and it wasn't horrible. i like the run/walk thing. run 1 min walk 1 min. one of the coaches there said i could probably (when i do it on my own cause this is totally how i'm running now) do 2:1. and i'm down with that - the walking every minute was ALMOST too much walking for me. so i think 2 or 3 to 1 minute of walking will be perfect.

i went with the 13 min mile group of course we were actually doing 12 min miles and kept catching up to the group in front of us.

i THINK it was better on my shins too. i can see one has started bruising already BUT the bruise (right now) is small and my shin doesn't hurt TOO bad. and the other shin doesn't look bruised yet.

and i could totally have run with a faster group but this run was actually kinda fun because i wasn't dying the whole time. maybe i was just pushing myself too hard when i was running on my own. and i said that before - i SUCK a jogging and pacing myself. i just start off sprinting and then by the end i'm like dead. i honestly felt like i could have run 6 more miles when we were finished.

i know for all the hardcore people this is like nothing and galloway probably seems cheesy but i feel proud of myself. i'm following my dad's training schedule from now on so next weekend we're running 8 miles at the OBX. which will be flat as shit. hell yea.

I have a couple training partners that used the galloway method to qualify for the Boston marathon so it is not too cheesy. Whatever works and gets people running is a good thing. If I had to guess, the lack of pain and being able to run longer had more to do with the slower pacing via group training than anything.

It sounds alot like you started going too hard for too long when you first started training and that's why the injuries started popping up. I'd bet that even if you didn't use the galloway method, but continued to build up nice and easy with long and slow runs, you would be fine.

Yeah I'm just getting back into running. After 2 weeks of running 2 miles 3 days each week, I just bumped up this morning's run to 3 miles. Wanted to do it in less than 30min (I know I'm slow right now, just tryin to get my legs back) and I did it in 29. I'm happy today.

^^ yea you're probably right. the slow pace is probably what is helping the most but i still really like it. my left shin still bruises a LITTLE when i run slow like that but it barely hurts and the bruise is small so i might just mention it to my doctor and see what she says. otherwise i feel good.

8+ this weekend

but i'll be in nags head so it will be flat! yay flat! haha.

^ good job

same. i used to run a mile in under 7. whoops. now i'm a fatass TRYING TO CHANGE THAT.

my goal right now is to run my 1/2 in sept in around 3 hours. i mean i'll be happy with like 3:15, i guess. the time limit on the course is 4 hours and i know i can do it under 4 but i figure a 12 minute pace will let me finish in 3.

then i'm going to run the city of oaks rex healthcare 1/2 with my dad in nov and that has a 3.5 hour time limit i think so my goal for that might be to try and see if i can get under 3. even if it is just like 2:59 haha.

^last year's city of oaks half was my first. fell in love with marathons/half marathons in spite of it being cold and rainy. at about mile 9, i hit a huge water puddle, soaking my shoes. it was brutal to finish, but its addictive to finish. starting from there, you start working down your times.

thinking i might do the city of oaks half again, and shoot for the full at the tobacco road in march. any other half marathons that others would recommend?

i pulled off a 2:02. wanted to break the 2 hour mark, but had to wait until the tobacco road half in march, where i pulled a 1:52. (weather was much, much nicer.)

really want to get back into the training again. when i signed up last year, the training was easier when i had the race in mind and planned. need to get signed up again so that the race gives me some incentive to get out and push it again.

anyone run out at falls lake? i'm not too far from there, and i've heard they've got some decent trails, but i dont know if they are decent running trails. (love the off road type of runs, but i dont want to get knocked over by perpetual bike riders.

^good job!!

I think I probably could have had a better time if I wasn't having to use the "facilities" at each checkpoint. My fiancée said "you just 6 2 mile sprints!!" and promptly lol'd at me.

I'm at brier creek, good running there. We're thinking about doing the OBX marathon this year. It'll be my first full.

haha, i totally understand. my twin sister had a nice set of "pitstops" too that allowed me to keep in front of her.

when is the full at obx? would love to try that one out, but that would depend on when it is if i can get into full marathon shape. it would be my first too.

this running stuff gets expensive. this $80.00-$100.00 makes my head spin sometimes.... at least (most of the time) it goes to a good cause.

anyone willing to travel for races...

the rock & roll series is FUN, i have done 2 of those and they're very well done, worth the price & you get a sweet medal

also the san francisco marathon is incredible. the views are spectacular!! you also get a medal on that one and the tech shirt that you get with the race has turned into my fav workout shirt bc its QUALITY

and for kicks, the 8k turkey trot in raleigh is fun. i have done it the last 2 years and ive started sort of a family tradition of going out for it. it doesnt take long & it makes you feel good about that big meal later!

i have also done the city of oaks 5k (march i think?) and that was fun. real short but they gave away oak saplings & we brought them back to houston to plant!

My knees put a limit on how far I can run, and it keeps me from doing marathons or Ironmans. After a half marathon, my knees are toast for a day or two.

^^ I thought about doing the Rock n Roll in Va Beach.

Also do any of you use the Nike + Ipod? I don't have Nike's, because personally I think they make an awful running shoe, but I got the Nike+ sensor and a shoe pocket to put it in.... I am really doubting the accuracy of it though, even after I calibrated it on a 400m track. It says I am running just under 6 min miles, when I feel like I'm running closer to 7min miles. I looked up the route I am running on Google maps and it differs by a little but I'm not sure how accurate that is either...

18 miles seems to be my limit in this heat. I felt weak as shit, legs like noodles. Anyone use GU in the middle of long runs/marathons? I've read you have to consume a considerable amount of water and I hate running with an ocean in my stomach.

^my fiance used GU when he ran his marathon in Nashville last year. He said it was actually good, and worked very well for him. He never trained with it before the race though.

As for my reason to come in here... I used to LOVE running. Last year, you had to tie me to something to keep me from going out. I figured it was because it's Charleston, and who doesn't love running there? But since moving to the NYC area, I can't find any motivation to go. I've gone a couple times recently for little 2 or 3 mile jogs, and the area is gorgeous (right on the Hudson), but I just don't feel up to it most of the time these days. I miss it a lot, but apparently not enough to change anything. :fail:

^^ Yep, I use Hammer Gel (have used GU, accel gels and powegels too, but I prefer the taste of Hammer) for any workout longer than 2 hrs as that is about the amount of fuel the average body has stored. In this heat, I would probably also supplement gels with some sort of electrolyte replacement like gatorade or e-caps as you will be sweating out alot of sodium and potassium and your body needs that to function well.

i used nike+ ipod in the past. its kind of accurate. its nice to be able to estimate distance while you're out

as far as water + gu, i think its a personal preference. i also like the gummies & energy beans. and if anyone is new to gu, make sure you sample some flavors before buying a bunch of one kind

my most favorites are vanilla & mint chocoalte chip. oh nomma nomma!

They feel awkward, but that's because they're unlike most running shoes. They're supposed to emulate a barefoot feel (like Vibrams) but still have basic padding.

They're also designed for neutral runners, so if you're an over/under pronator they might feel weird.

^ Yes, and I am not impressed.

It does not work well in the woods. I ran a 15k trail race, and the distance was off by over 2 miles.

Also, it does not like to get wet. It's impossible for me to do anything on the bezel after running for a couple of miles because of the sweat on my hands.

That's disappointing to hear. I like the fact that I can double it as a watch, I'm not a big fan of the other models as they're bulky as hell and I'd only wear them when running. So I'm guessing I won't be able to swim with it either.

I suppose I'll just stick to my old iron man.

^^ I actually like the Suunto watches. I don't like the fact that you have to buy the GPS pod in addition to the watch and clip it to a belt or to your arm. At least with the 405 Forerunner everything is built into the wrist unit.

my buddies dont use the GPS. They just use the foot pod (like a pedometer) and then they both have the bike pods as well. Amazingly, the foot pod has been pretty accurate.

I like the feature of the garmin 405 with the little runner that helps you keep on pace. That's exactly what I'm looking for in a trainer. The heart rate monitor is also a nice touch. I might give the 405 a try. Anyone on here trying for a Marathon in the fall shooting for sub 3 hour?
