^^ when you take a stride and your foot hits the ground, it has a tendency to roll inward (overpornation) or outward (underpornation)

I chose running. Despite the unnecessary amount of sweat and the increasing shin splint pains, it was actually pretty enjoyable.

I also recommend Brooks. I have moderate flat fleet so overpronation is a problem, I loved my Trance XNS and just order The Beast.

you might have seen my gf at lake johnson. she's the hot one.

i love running at the lake. plenty of running space, lots to look at, but the bird poop can go.

i can only run about 200 ft.

i think it is about time for new shoes...

i went up to 6 days/40 minute or so runs, used to do just 5, last Sunday i made up for 3 missed days.

I went out last night at about 10. It was so much more enjoyable with the sun down and a decent breeze. If I hadn't eaten so much food an hour before I might have attempted to go for more, but my stomach was yelling at me.

quick tip= try not to slow down during the end of a run, in fact pick up the pace the last hundred yards or so. This will train your body to get used to power at the end, and you will get faster this way. It may suck doing this for the first few times, but this trick is great. You feel really good afterwards too.

I walk 3-5 miles a day to or from work (metro back sometimes). Fuck running though, i'd get hit by a car.

anyone know of that site that was in the NANO the other day that gives you music with a steady beat to run 2?

it was like http://www.dj____.com i cant remember the rest.

but im about to go to footaction here soon to buy some new shoes, im in a run conditioning class and its killin me but its fun...I wouldnt run otherwise so why not.

^DON'T GO TO FOOTACTION FOR RUNNING SHOES!

The only reason you should go there is if you want to buy oversized baggy thug wear. Go to Athlete's Foot, Raleigh Run Outfitters or some other place where the people actually know something about running. They'll look at your stride and tell you what you need. Also, Athlete's Foot in Cameron Village gives 10% off to State students.

well footaction gives 70% off on their shoes

and im pretty sure the pumas, new balances, or nike shoes they have there should be the same as any other place.

why cant i just go to raleigh runners figure out my foot fall pattern and then go get 70% off and save a ton of cash?

Exactly. If you find what you need there, more power to you. But those phat Nikes that look just like the ones Ludacris wears are not what you need for running. Nikes might look cool (to some people) but they don't specialize in quality running shoes. Good luck finding any selection of Brooks, Asics and Saucony at the ghetto thug wear outlet. Heck, you'd probably have better luck at Omega Sports than Footaction.

So, I went to Foot Solutions. I have a medium arch, normal gait, and the lady would only suggestion motion control shoes (looked them up after I went). Wouldn't I want stability or cushioned?

I did mention I've sprained my one ankle a few times if that has anything to do with it..

^ You could always go to another store and get a second opinion. But there's no shame in running with motion control shoes if thats what you need. I run with them.

Ah yeah. I mean I'm fine with whatever. I just thought those were for overpronators. I kind of got the feeling she was telling me to get the only one they had in stock.

I'm going on my 5th week after a 16 or so year lapse. I can't run very long without having to stop and walk... I run maybe a staggered 60% of the 5k. Building up endurance isn't easy for me.

So far I've lost about 15 lbs, and I wasn't fat to begin with. Trying to get the waistline down by 2" but so far I've only lost weigh. No difference in waistline. I guess it just takes more time?

I've also got knee problems to overcome. My right knee hurts at the very beginning each time I start to run (even after the walking bouts) but the pain goes away after a bit. It never hurts just walking around, but I've had some sharp pains when going up/down stairs. Any advice for a beginner?

That basically matches exactly the symptoms I had that was diagnosed by a chiro/sport medicine guy (I think he was more chiro than sports med) as patellar tendinitis.

I cycle in addition to running (triathlete) and he claimed that the cycling had caused the vastus medialis (the 'teardrop' quad muscle on your inner thigh) to get much much stronger than the vastus lateralis (the one opposite one on the outside of your thigh) and was pulling on the patellar tendon causing it to rub wrong while flexing my knee and irritating it. I could walk straight no problem, but if I twisted a little (like walking around a corner) I'd get this ultra sharp pain for a second, then it would go away.

The active massage seemed to really get it worked out, but after I went back to running and started upping my mileage again, it came back.


I have various theories as to why this has happened to me. Last year, I trained even more than I had this year up until my knee started hurting, and never had any knee issues, never. The year before, I had just come off a long period of being solely a weight lifter. As a lifter, I kept up with most all my muscles, and always went through the full range of motion. This kept me limber and flexible. Last year, to start the year I was careful to warm up and then stretch, no matter if it was a 4 hr ride or a 30 minute run. As the year progressed, I got away from stretching as a warmup, and I slowly weaned off the weights because they kinda got in the way of endurance training (I think because I was doing too heavy weight on too specific groups). Through the winter I didn't get back in the gym solidly, didn't really train regularly, and combined with raising my seat height too much on my bike, and possibly shoes that aren't right (arch support, but I am now not sure if I actually have a high arch) I developed tendinitis.

So, my plan from now is to get back in the gym and get the the muscle strength/balance back. I'm going to add in pilates/yoga hopefully for flexibility, and go back to stretching before workouts and after them as well.

So just like ^ mentioned, you should probably consider adding some strength work in, maybe some calisthenics (I hope to work this in eventually myself), etc.

This describes it as well. If I were to stand, keep my feet planted and twist such that my shoulders were perpendicular to my feet I can get it to fire up. Most notably walking around tight corners like going up staircases, just like you mentioned.

anyone have severe side pain occasionally?

today is the first time it has been as bad as it was today...normally its on the other side and i get runners cramps that I can breath out.


today its my right side and was unbearable, normally whatever pain i feel i keep running this i couldnt take.

when i push on it, tends to make it less painful but still hurts.
even noticed it tonight 4 hours after the run when i was walking around...
hernia maybe??? hope not.

8 miles on the treadmill at Planet Fitness, when I got off I was a little dizzy. JUST put a lot of new mus is on my mp3 player to pull me through the last couple of miles.


People were looking at me like WTF how could you be on a treadmill for 1:20

Yeah, I would get really really bored running for that long on a treadmill. I prefer running outdoors if I can.
