The two cities in the world with the most skyscrapers are Hong Kong and New York (specifically Manhattan). Guess what those two have in common...

Hint, it's not plenty of space.

You are right. Actually, I do, but I am careless about it.

ITT ssclark doesn't know the difference between 0 and O

OK, obviously there has been miscommunication here.

Str8BacardiL posted "Why the fuck build a skyscraper in a barren desert???" immediately after my post where I posted a link to a pic of the shadow of the world's tallest building which is in Dubai, UAE. That country is densely populated, and has gold plated supercars.

But now you and Crede are re-posting one of the earlier pics I posted in September as a rebuttal to my rant from earlier in the day.

Well, that's not UAE. That's Saudi Arabia. Completely different country. Unless you use carats, the default is that a given post commenting on another is commenting on the one just before it. Not my fault here.

Yes, their population density is very low. Why are they building one? Refer to my earlier argument:

Countries which have money will build skyscrapers, regardless of whether they are deserts or any other kind of geographical classification.

When completed, it will become the world's tallest building at around a km, but of course, that's not their first skyscraper. They already have the world's 3rd tallest building, as well as four more in the 135 tallest buildings.

In summary, people/countries will build skyscrapers because there is a need (high population density) and they have the resources, or because they have the money, regardless of need. Dubai is kind of a mix of both reasons (much more so the latter), but they also did it for the artificial purpose of creating an entertainment/service-based economy so that the world can flock to them. Saudi Arabia has no need due to all the empty space they have, but definitely has the money and the urge to show off a bit, and that's why they are starting to build more and more tall buildings.

^ Of course I know that; that was a rhetorical question. I already touched upon population density, or just read the paragraph above.

Q: "Why are they building one?"

A: "Because they can."

----

You don't really think the density is so real that these are "needed", do you? Because if only rich people are living in these you're going to run out of rich people. Those density numbers aren't "density numbers of super wealthy people living in Qatar".

^ In this case, yes!!! I am glad you get it, hope Str8BacardiL gets it too.

Why do people buy expensive homes, watches, and cars? Because they can, not because they need them.

DUDE

CAN YOU make yourself clear? What country are you referring to now? UAE, or Saudi Arabia? Either way, I explained the reasons for both of them. Did you even read my summary paragraph at the end? I made it very clear that for SA it is because they have money but not the need, and Dubai is a mix of the two, but availability of money is the bigger reason than the need.

People/countries will build skyscrapers because they have money, period. If they didn't have money, would they still build immensely tall skyscrapers? NO.

Are you even sure these skyscrapers effectively handle the population density? Or rather, is the density high BECAUSE of the skyscrapers?

I don't know; ask HK, Manhattan, Singapore, and Shanghai. I never claimed to know anything about that subject. The two examples of Dubai and Saudi Arabia are not applicable here -- for the nth time -- as they are doing it just because they have money and want to show of. They do have a demand, though, demand of super-expensive condos due to all the rich people. And so skyscrapers make good business sense there.

As for the rest of your post, I clearly said if there is a need and they have the money, they will build, implying if there is a need but they don't have the money (Nigeria, Bangladesh, Congo, Ethiopia...), they can't. Or, they will build even if they don't have the need but have the money.

It is important to differentiate between the two reasons.

When I get rich I am going to build a skyscraper in Wake Forest or Fuquay!!! I will not put it downtown WF or FV though I will put it on a farm near the county line for all the filthy rich. There will be nearby amenities like being able to milk the cows, skip rocks by the pond, and piss in the woods!!!!

Why have I never heard until today about the Raleigh rule and how high buildings can be?
What is that nonsense?
