Airplane Hour (Weds., December 12 at 9 PM ET/PT) Adam and Jamie find out if either of them can safely land a Boeing 747-400 on a runway in varying weather conditions. Meanwhile, Kari, Tory and Grant risk life and limb to investigate skydiving myths regularly featured in Hollywood action films. Is it possible to catch up with someone in freefall if that person jumps out a plane before you do? Can you really hold a conversation during freefall? And would you survive if you opened your parachute only a few feet off the ground? Finally, Adam and Jamie carefully navigate their way through a myth that has baffled everyone from web bloggers to pilots. If a plane is traveling at takeoff speed on a conveyor belt, and the belt is matching that speed in the opposite direction, can the plane take off? Extensive small-scale testing with a super treadmill and a nearly uncontrollable model airplane don't completely resolve the myth, so our flight cadets supersize the myth with help from a willing pilot and his Ultralight flying machine. you sir need a lesson in physics. since the propulsion of the jet is provide by the jet engine and not the wheels, the plane will move relative to the air around it...not the ground that the wheels are rolling on. all the treadmill will do is make the wheels spin faster.10/26/2007 5:27:23 PM |

this "myth" depends on how the myth is "read"...
the propulsion is provided by the jet engine, sure..i'll give you that. but when the jet is on ground, the wheels move as the jet is propelled along... if the treadmill matches the speed of said wheels, then the jet is still just sitting in one area...i dont' care how much the jet engine is putting out....the total displacement of the jet is still 0... unless it is a harrier, it is just sitting in one spot with jets going full force. 10/26/2007 6:28:31 PM |
stowaway All American 11770 Posts user info edit post |
but the wheels turning is a byproduct of being pushed by the engine. The engine (jet or prop) isn't acting directly on the wheels. The wheels are turning due to friction against the runway. You can put a plane on skids or pontoons and it'll still take off. 10/26/2007 6:32:40 PM |

wings need air moving over them to produce lift, you can hold a plane still with little force on a treadmill, just enough to overcome friction in the wheel bearings, thats all the force the engine has to produce, its no different than flipping it upside down and spinning the tires 10/26/2007 6:41:15 PM |
BDubLS1 All American 10406 Posts user info edit post |
i understand that...but the thing says the belt is matching the speed. . that's the part that you have to watch. if it is matching the speed of the wheels, then there is no forward movement...skidding isn't allowed, sliding isn't allowed. 10/26/2007 6:42:06 PM |

its really no different than if its sitting on a hill and the engine is holding it still, there is thrust, but no forward motion and no lift 10/26/2007 6:44:29 PM |

This 5 year old says the plane would take off, and of course he's right. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EopVDgSPAk
The only difference the treadmill makes is a small amount of friction on the wheel bearings due to the weight of the plane. As the engine quickly overcomes this, the plane will move forward, lift will be produced, and soon even this minute friction will be eliminated. As someone said, the wheels will be rotating at twice the normal speed, but they could roll at any speed and it wouldn't matter as long as the bearings didn't fail.
Another example would be a seaplane taking off upstream. Sure, a weak engine would cause a failure, but airplane engines have plenty of power to overcome the drag produced by the water skids. Even a raging reverse water current wouldn't increase the drag by a significant amount, since the skids are designed to slice through the water with little resistance just as wheels are designed to roll with negligible resistance. 10/26/2007 7:17:16 PM |

shit i had the myth all confused, yeah it would be able to move forward on a treadmill, groundspeed is irrelevant to airspeed 10/26/2007 7:22:32 PM |
BDubLS1 All American 10406 Posts user info edit post |
it wouldn't move forward if the treadmill matched the wheel speed which is driven by the propulsion of the jets 10/26/2007 8:24:34 PM |

the jet/prop would be the equivalent of someone pushing/pulling the plane forward on the treadmill. so yes, it will go
imagine the treadmill going 200mph, but the plane is attached to some tow trucks or something NOT on the treadmill. The plane WILL be pulled forward. 10/26/2007 11:07:37 PM |
simonn best gottfriend 28968 Posts user info edit post |
i'm pretty sure the point of this myth is not to see whether or not the plane will move forward on the treadmill. 10/26/2007 11:13:05 PM |
tchenku midshipman 18586 Posts user info edit post |
well you need to move to achieve lift
unless you umm.. start hovering at a given speed, as has been suggested on TWW before 10/26/2007 11:17:33 PM |
