The Renaissance was decent in Asheville. Think our rate was $99/night. It's a 4-star hotel so it's nice. If anyone is still looking for a place to stay.

^ I like that place, but good luck sniffing that rate when the weather is decent+, especially on a weekend.

Yeah no idea how we got that. It was two years ago and the AAA rates.

haha yeah a lot changes in two years. I stayed at the Downtown Asheville Inn or whatever. It's a total dump but it's the best price you can get to actually walk to bars downtown. For what it is, it's worth it, but it was like $130 a night (although this was in July when I was up for a wedding with a military/federal/aaa discount).

You could just stay somewhere like Brevard or Hendersonville and then drive the 20 minutes to get to downtown asheville and save yourself a shitload of money. Also, super close to some great wilderness areas like Mt. Pisgah.

Or just stay somewhere along Tunnel Rd. I used to do that in my younger & on a budget days.

I stayed at Renaissance two weeks ago. I was on the Government rate of roughly $65 during the week, then it was about $179 for Fri & Sat nights.

We've done Hendersonville, Renaissance, and somewhere on Tunnel Rd in our trips to Asheville in the past. I wouldn't say one is better than another without knowing what your trip's plans are. You don't need to stay downtown if you're going to do a lot of driving anyway.

We're limiting everything to downtown for this upcoming weekend so we found an Airbnb for around $100/night. The description (and comments support it) says it's a 5 minutes walk from downtown.

I did that earlier this month via Priceline for ~$70/month. Pretty dumpy part of town though.

Sweet Peas Hostel has private rooms for $60/month. Nice place, and you can't beat the location.

That's usually a good option, as long as they keep fees to a minimum.

What kind of gov't rate? Fed lodging rate in that county is $102, and I can't imagine state gov't is that cheap. If so that's mighty impressive!

Yeah, I don't know how that worked out that way. I'm in local govt, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not (or the time of year).

Definitely check out Grove Park Inn. It's hella expensive, but try to catch a deal there and maybe spend one night there. Incredible golf courses, really top end spa, and there's usually something really cool or interesting happening there on the weekends.

I used to stay there a lot...you could catch e-specials (sign up for all that on their site) for less than $200/night with that really good buffet breakfast upstairs included. Now that Omni bought it, I think it's more like $300/night.

Asheville is so awesome when the weather is good.

We checked out the south slope breweries - Green Man, Twinleaf, Hi-Wire, Burial, and the WW Funkatorium. Twinleaf was probably my favorite place out of all of them inside. Green Man's new rooftop area will be pretty cool when it's done. Didn't do much in the way of eating other than small appetizers like cheese/crackers at the Battery Park Bookstore (my wife is obsessed with that place) when we were drinking. Only real meals we ate were at Laughing Seed and the White Duck Taco spot downtown.

I, too, had my favorite beers at Twinleaf.

I just meant the vibe inside but beers were really good too. The tripel they have there was delicious.

I'll probably skip Hi Wire next time I go back and spend more time at Wicked Weed and Twinleaf.

Anybody have recommendations on things to do Saturday night that don't involve bars/breweries/drinking? The Mrs. is pregnant and that's not our scene anyways.

you could look into the music venues and see if a show is playing. downtown also has nightly ghost tours. Or you could grab a nice dinner at the many restaurants recommended ITT and just call it an early night.

While Asheville isn't a rowdy late-night scene downtown most of the nighttime activities do revolve around the bars and breweries.

Realize a lot of us are getting too grown up for this, but if you're OK with a hostel, Asheville Hostel & Guest House is pretty unbeatable. Block and a half from Patton right between Orange Peel and Asheville Brewing with private rooms for ~$54/night after the Facebook booking discount they've had for forever.

It's relatively small with no dorm rooms so it's not too crazy and parking is guaranteed. Think they have some larger rooms if you have a bigger party and a bungalow with private bath for slightly more. Stayed there a couple months ago on the way to Nashville as well as few times for shows and stuff and it's been solid every time.

I did March of last year. It is a shit hole. I was in a rush to see us play Syracuse in the tourney and they had no parking in the lot at the hotel so I missed a good chunk of the game parking and carrying our shit to the room. Our heat did not work so I went to tell the dude in the lobby but he shrugged and said there was nothing he could do tonight. Our room stunk of smoke too.

This year we got a cottage on airbnb. I couldn't walk to Wicked Weed but it worked out way better.
