I installed in on my workstation for testing purposes and it doesn't seem any less crashy than normal. (IE and Outlook both love to randomly crap out) 3/29/2008 9:59:49 AM |

I went back to Vista from XP thinking it would be decent with SP1 and maybe more drivers worked with it now. Less than a week later I had to format because Vista just sucks so bad.
On a different note, the new beta Ubuntu is the most stable linux for non-linuxy people I have ever used, I can't wait til the final release comes out, I might stay with it for a while this time. 3/29/2008 7:27:27 PM |

so far i haven't had anything major to occur. however, i am a vista noob - i have 'played with it' but not explored it. it seems like at least for me its going to last and do pretty good, at least for the moment it feels that way. 3/29/2008 7:46:46 PM |

i'm gonna throw vista on my Home Theater PC for the new media center... see how that goes with sp1. 3/29/2008 9:19:57 PM |

its going good here. also i was a bit disgruntled that activesync would not install on vista, sure enough the mobile device manager that is pretty much built into to vista quickly got ms's face back almost instantly. 3/29/2008 9:25:41 PM |

^^one thing you'll instantly notice is the constant updates.
a) turn mediaPC on b) put in DVD c) start movie d) 5 min. into movie, windows dialog box asking you to update e) click on update later f) 10 min. into movie, Vista AUTOMATICALLY installs updates, shuts down computer g) start movie again from the beginning b/c Vista didn't save the spot. h) curse at M$ 3/31/2008 2:59:42 PM |

apparently vista sp1 is very secure.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/29/linux-becomes-only-os-to-escape-pwn-2-own-unscathed/
Took them 2 minutes to hack a mac book air, but i think the guy had been working on it for a while. Took them a whole 2 days to hack vista sp1. The only reason they were able to hack it was they finally allowed them to install java and find an exploit through that, which is technically 3rd party.
The only big change i noticed in SP1 was network transfer times seemed to be decreased. Pre-sp1 sometimes transfering large files over the network (+4gigs) would not correctly show the estimated time, but now it works fine.

I love Ubuntu/Kbuntu, if only it was easier to run autocad/solidworks and DX10 games on it without going through a bunch of shit. 3/31/2008 3:22:59 PM |

^time required to crack doesn't necessarily equate to "how secure" something is.... Charlie Miller came prepared and came with his exploit code done already...
just because linux wasn't hacked doesn't necessarily equate to it being secure:
Quote : | "In the end, it was reported that some folks on hand had discovered bugs in the Linux OS, but many of them "didn't want to put the work into developing the exploit code that would be required to win the contest."" |
BUT it does sound that SP1 fixed a lot of exploits known... and those who knew of them found them to be closed on the laptop with the newer SP1 installed

i assume i can turn updates OFF, which I will.3/31/2008 3:30:53 PM |
Prospero All American 11662 Posts user info edit post |
of course you can, heck you can leave them on and turn off auto restart upon updates as well.
i'm just saying that there's some wacky things i'd never expect an OS to do in the middle of displaying a movie... i just think it's a terrible oversight
i mean who on earth would program something to check for updates while showing a movie? that's like the first thing i'd check for... it's just messed up.

Actually, almost all secure devices, both virtual and physical, in the world, are rated by the time it would take to compromise the system. Safes, locks, encryption schemes, et al are rated by time to crack by field experts.3/31/2008 6:35:42 PM |

dude you didn't even read the rest of my post. *sheesh*
my point is this... someone obviously came prepared.... some people came prepared but didn't get what was expected... others knew how to hack it but chose to be lazy and not do it.... hence you can't make a direct correlation in this case between how secure something is and how long it took to be hacked.
and i said "necessarily"...

the vulnerablity that was used to crack vista was in flash and the guy that wrote it said it would be pretty easy to re-write it to work on osx or linux.
Also, he wrote his exploit against flash on stock vista, and it didn't work on sp1 until he wrote another workarround.

Quote : | "Shane Macaulay, who played a hand bringing down a Mac during last year's Pwn2Own contest, defeated the Vista machine using a previously unknown vulnerability in Adobe Flash. " |
Quote : | "Initially thwarting Macaulay's efforts was the recently released Service Pack 1 for Vista, which he had neglected to install when testing the Flash exploit in the days leading up to the contest. Per the contest rules, each target machine had to be fully patched, and when the researcher first ran the code during the competition, new page protections added by Microsoft's security team prevented the exploit from properly executing." |

well then they better notify engadget: http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/29/linux-becomes-only-os-to-escape-pwn-2-own-unscathed/

it does seem to be flash... from tipping point: http://dvlabs.tippingpoint.com/blog/2008/03/28/pwn-to-own-final-day-and-wrap-up
Quote : | "Congratulations to Shane Macaulay from Security Objectives - he has just won the Fujitsu U810 laptop running Vista Ultimate SP1 after it was installed with the latest version of Adobe Flash. Not only is he the official winner of the Fujitsu laptop, but also $5,000 from us. Shane received some assistance from his friends Derek Callaway (also from Security Objectives) and Alexander Sotirov. If you'll also remember, Shane Macaulay was Dino Dai Zovi's on-site team member at last year's PWN to OWN event in which they ultimately took the top prize.
The new Adobe Flash 0day vulnerability that Shane exploited has been acquired by the Zero Day Initiative, and has been responsibly disclosed to Adobe who is now working on the issue. Until Adobe releases a patch for this issue, neither we nor the contestants will be giving out any additional information about the vulnerability. You can track the status of the vulnerability on the Zero Day Initiative upcoming advisories page under ZDI-CAN-306. " |
