so silly question,

is it a good idea to start with the first diablo and play the 2nd as well before playing diablo 3?

I don't game that often and this game looks great, but don't want to miss out on half the plot/game play if I didn't play the first 2...

There are plenty of sources online. If you're in a real mood you can buy the Book of Cain. It has everything you need to know.

Don't redownload, you can download a full client from the website that won't fuck up. People have apparently been having a problem with the pre-downloader. Also it took less time to download the full client downloader, than it did to download just the 7gb installer

Read the thing while it installs, that should get you up to speed. I believe the tab that starts it is like "Stay a while and listen to my story" or something. It cycles all the way around so if you don't pay attention you wouldn't know which tab to go back to

Basic story of first game: church in town starts spawning evil shit, hero goes in finds a crack in the basement leading into Hell. You take out Diablo but the soulstone binding him to this world remains so that anyone could possibly bring it back. Believing that you're the only one with the strength to contain Diablo, you shove the soulstone into your forehead to wrestle with the demon in perpetuity.

Second game: The hero from the first game is a loser can couldn't contain Diablo. He's waging an internal battle with himself and for some reason is heading "to the East" leaving a trail of death and destruction in his wake. Following this trail, you encounter Deckard Cain, a sage from the first game who fills you in on Diablo and his two brothers, Mephisto and Baal. Baal was imprisoned by the Arch-Mage Tal Rasha in the same manner that the hero for the first game did, but then was sealed in a tomb. Baal escapes, and you defeats Mephisto, claiming (but not using) his soulstone then goes through a portal into Hell to defeat Diablo (who has fully won the battle with the original hero and has manifested in his big red scariness) and destroy both his and Mephisto's Soulstones on the Hellforge (which for some arbitrary reason is the only way they can be destroyed). Baal remains at large.

Expansion: Baal attacks the Worldstone for some reason or another and you stop it. I forget what happens to his soulstone or if he even dropped one when you defeat him.

All along the way you're aided by Tyriel, an archangel. Hell and Heaven have been fighting a war for eternity and you're part of it now.

There is no difference between the installer for the collectors edition and the standard copy.

You can install the downloadable version, attach your CE key to your bnet account when you get it, and be on your way without losing or missing anything.
