I thought I had mentioned this, but maybe not. I had jury duty a few weeks ago and had the opportunity to convict a very guilty drunk driver. Turns out it was his 3rd offense, and he didn't even have a license. He's going to jail soon.

Yeah way to make all the witnesses run and not cooperate with investigators......I would think catching the murderer would be a higher priority than writing drinking tickets.

anyone remember that one chick sitting under that tent all covered in blood

i bet she's still fucked up in the head

ps the cops probably pulled the DUI guy because he was driving off from a crime scene, and i can only assume he was driving fast (based on his own story)

anyways who cares, innocent until proven guilty. you got away with it.

was hoping I wasn't gonna see my picture in this thread, not the type of thing I wanted to be remembered for, thanks Eric.
But there is no excuse for driving drunk, buzzed, or with any of your senses impaired. Although we all think, 'hey, I'm ok, I'm sure I can get home without getting caught/hurt.' it's fucking stupid. We never think about the what if's, and the people on the road that are following the rules, who's lives we're putting in danger. I didn't hurt anyone, nor destroy any property, thank god, but that doesn't make it anymore excusable.
Perhaps a better public transportation system would help, or friends and fellow citizens that could help by taking away someone's keys, or whatever it takes to keep that person off the road, perhaps stricter punishments...in some countries, they shoot you, others they drive you and your spouse 20 miles out of town and force you to walk back. I don't know what would help, but hopefully all of you don't have to learn your lesson the hard way.

Or perhaps if people were driving, maybe they just shouldnt have that drink in the first place. It makes me angry that most people think of it from the wrong end of the timeline. Most people drive themselves somewhere, decide to drink a little, and then make the decision if they should drive or not. How about people making the decision before hand.

"Im going to drive tonight, so I cant have a drink at all. If I want to drink, I need to leave my car at home and take a cab to and from the place or go with a driver who wont be drinking."

I am not saying you are wrong. I am just saying that is what people have been saying as long as I have been alive and drunk driving continues to be a huge problem.

Why does campus not offer night wolfline or shuttle service for responsible students who choose not drink in drive to get back to their dorms.

oh wait they do; but police are more concerned about cracking down on "underage drinking" than discouraging drunken driving. I have heard stories of NCSU cops (bored probably on a friday) raiding the werewolf line and stories of the shuttle drivers being "required" to take druken students to the NCSU campus police station to get alcohol tickets.

I think the skin BAC tester in cars would make a much better and less costly impact than adding public transportation, especially in NC.

Yeah, i totally agree with you, unfortunately.

What's a real shame is that people who do make the right decision about not driving drunk aren't safe from the people who don't make the right decision.

well we can't seem to get people to stop driving drunk, so by offering them increased options, we can lessen the number of alcohol related crimes/fatalities. Living in the city I've got the subway to take me everywhere, not to mention parking is either costly or non-existant around here, and gas is outrageous, so taxis and the subway are just easier and cheaper.

I hear you on that but most of NC is way too rural for public transportation, hell most of NC probably has very limited taxi service. A city needs a certain density to offset the cost of building public transportation and enough riders to actually use it.

"LEXINGTON - Tommy Lee Carter had been trying to make it up to Raleigh for a N.C. State football game with his friends for four years, but never could find the right weekend.

Carter, a 21-year-old Bessemer City resident, finally made the long-awaited trip last week for the Wolfpack's game against Florida State, but he never made it home, his mother Arhonda Carter said Sunday night.

He decided to drive back to Bessemer City early Saturday morning and was 4.6 miles south of Lexington on Interstate 85, when he lost control of his Chevy S-10 pickup truck and drove off of an interstate bridge to his death."

Doesn't say in the article that he was drunk, but multiple friends told me that he was hammered prior to leaving for home at 2am. What i'm surprised at (and i say this without joke) is that he made it all the way to lexington in his condition without a problem.

Be careful. I did the same thing one time. then I was told that had a cop checked on me, and could tell I was driving, being in the drivers seat with the keys would have been enough to screw me. I dont know if this is true, someone else will have to confirm.

Officer Terry Cozad has been on paid administrative leave since his arrest Sunday night by a Mills County sheriff's deputy. Authorities say he refused to take an alcohol breath test.

Cozad has been with the Council Bluffs police department since 1999. He was named officer of the year earlier this year.

Cozad's attorney declined to comment on the case Thursday. "

"DALLAS — A car driven by a drunk driving suspect with four previous DWI arrests raced away from a sheriff's deputy, ran a red light then went airborne after a wreck and landed on top of an SUV, killing a newlywed couple inside, authorities said.

Second-grade teacher Erika Clouet, 24, and her husband of a little over a month, construction worker and aspiring musician German Clouet, 23, of Irving, were killed in the accident early Monday.

The driver, Uriel Perez Palacios, 22, of Dallas, remained in the hospital Tuesday. His passenger had to be cut from the vehicle and was also hospitalized.

Officials on Tuesday charged Palacios with two counts of murder and three counts of intoxication assault. A phone listing for Palacios could not be found.

Palacios was arrested as recently as June for driving while intoxicated and was released after paying a $500 fine. He was also involved in two police chases and had four outstanding drug and DWI warrants, officials said.

A Dallas County sheriff's deputy pulled over Palacios around 2 a.m. Monday after spotting him weaving through traffic, authorities said. As the deputy approached the car on foot, Palacios sped off with his lights off and drove through a red light, striking a sport utility vehicle carrying five Southern Methodist University students.

Palacios' car went airborne and crashed into the Clouets' SUV, crushing it and killing them at the scene, authorities said. The couple was returning from a date at the movies.

"She was a wonderful teacher and will be greatly missed," said Irma Vega-Zadeh, the principal at the elementary school where Clouet taught.

At least three others were injured, including two SMU students who were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

"Many deputies said it was one of the worst accidents that they ever saw," Dallas County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Kimberlee Leach said in a story on The Dallas Morning News' Web site. "You couldn't make out what kinds of vehicles were involved."

Santa Ana police say the naked man was pulled over by police Wednesday night after his van hit a car.

Police Commander Stephen Colon says a driver alerted officers to the van that had just hit his car. He says the driver was fumbling in the front seat and refused to put his hands up.

Policed used a stun gun on his head and neck and then saw he was completely naked.

Colon says the man, whose name was not released, was being tested for drugs or alcohol."

technically alcohol impairs your judgement ability, therefore any kind of consequence designed to prevent drinking and driving will be overlooked due to impairment.

"RENO, Nev. — The Nevada Highway Patrol says a drunken driving suspect in Reno was gassed in more ways than one. A 40-year-old Reno woman was arrested early Tuesday after an ambulance crew saw her driving on U.S. Highway 395 with a fuel hose and nozzle sticking out of her gas tank.

Patrol spokesman Chuck Allen said the crew tried to signal the woman after they spotted the unusual appendage to her green Subaru wagon about 4:30 a.m. but couldn't get her attention.

He said the crew eventually initiated a traffic stop and radioed the state troopers. Upon their arrival, the woman failed a sobriety test and was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Allen said they are still trying to find the service station that is missing the nozzle and about 6 feet of fuel hose."

Jason Scott Cardenas, 33, of 325 Bond Lake Drive, faces charges of speeding to elude arrest.

According to an arrest warrant, an Apex officer tried to pull over Cardenas because he appeared to be an impaired driver.

Instead of stopping, Cardenas sped away and drove carelessly and recklessly, the warrant says. He ran stop signs and red lights and drove left of center before the officer could stop and arrest him.

Cardenas had a 6-year-old and 10-year-old child in his vehicle, according to the arrest warrant."

"Judge's daughter sues driver she ran into during crash

Convicted last year of intoxication manslaughter for the death of her boyfriend, the 21-year-old daughter of a state district judge is suing the truck driver she ran into during a drunken driving crash.

Elizabeth Shelton, the daughter of juvenile judge Pat Shelton, is accusing truck driver Lance Bennett of negligence in the Oct. 23, 2007, wreck that killed her boyfriend Matthew McNiece.

Shelton had a blood alcohol concentration more than three times the legal limit, two tests showed. She was sentenced to eight years' probation and had to serve four months in jail.

Shelton, her family and the family of the boyfriend who was killed are suing for $20,000 for the destruction of the Lexus SUV she was driving and an undetermined amount for mental anguish, pain and suffering.

Bennett was driving the box truck that Shelton rear-ended on the Southwest Freeway near Kirby around 2 a.m.

Bennett's attorney, John Havins, said the lawsuit, filed in October, was the last chance to make a claim before the statute of limitations ran out.

He noted that Shelton named 16 defendants, including insurance companies and banks. "They're just throwing everything against the wall to see if anything sticks," Havins said.

During Shelton's trial, an expert for the defense testified there was evidence that Bennett swerved into Shelton's lane. An expert for the prosecution, however, said there wasn't evidence that Bennett got in her way.

Testimony also showed that the company Bennett was working for let the insurance on the truck lapse.

"The injuries and property damage sustained by (Shelton and her family) were not the result of intentional acts, but were accidental and caused by the negligence of the uninsured/underinsured driver," Shelton's attorney Mark Sandoval wrote in the lawsuit.

Former Pack sub charged with DWI
The Associated Press Comment on this story

Former N.C. State basketball player Brian Keeter was in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center on Tuesday and has been charged with driving while impaired in connection with a wreck in Charlotte, according to court records.

Police records show that Keeter, 29, was driving a southbound car that skidded off Providence Road and hit a utility pole just before 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

He previously pleaded guilty to driving while impaired in connection with a 2004 incident in Wake County, court records show.

At N.C. State, Keeter was a non-scholarship player who played rarely from 1999 through 2002. He gained popularity with fans, however, for his prolific scoring in the closing minutes of blowout games where N.C. State had an insurmountable lead."

One of my friends in high school pulled out in front of a drunk driver on his way to school one morning. From what he said there was nothing the guy could have done to avoid the collision and it was all his fault, but his insurance didn't pay the guy for the damages and the guy got a DUI conviction out of the deal. They basically shared the fault or something since the other guy was drunk. It's just another reason not to drive drunk. You might be able to control your car, but you'll still go to jail as soon as some dumbass high school kid pulls out in front of you, you smack a deer, or another drunk side swipes you.
