The old dude is getting some well deserved credit but there no respect for Cullen and the other guy.

Hell, Phelps didn't even swim in the qualifier for the medal round with the relay team.

Did he not have the slowest time? Seriously, his job was simply not to mess up. It is like that for every relay team.

I don't care...I am so proud of Cullen for this amazing accomplishment, I know it almost cost Phelps's his Olympic record but this was such an amazing race and I was so proud that Cullen proved his way into the final and helped win the Gold. If something beats this out as the best moment of the Olympics then it will have truly deserved it.

phelps did by almost a full second. i'm not a swimming expert, but i don't think that being the first leg puts you at a disadvantage like in running. someone correct me if i'm wrong though.

He swam the slowest time, and as he jumped into the pool the announcer said "Here's cullen Jones, who is probably the slowest leg of this relay, but he earned his way in here with his performance earlier today..."

Cullen still swam a sub 48 second 100m, which is freakin fast. He was just doing it against the best relay team in the world.

Fortunately, they got the gold medal so that is all anyone cares about. He swam the fastest leg in the previous round. I'm sure everyone would say it was lost in the third leg if the French won, but you don't have to worry about that. The US was behind after Phelps' first leg as well, but noone is talking about that either.

Yeah for real. Chipper is hitting like 350, but nobody cares because the Braves suck.

Oh shit I thought this thread was about baseball.

Seriously though I am happy for Cullen Jones regardless if he was the slowest leg. That fucker has a gold medal now.

Dude swims a sub 48 second 100m leg next to the fastest swimmers in the world and people are talking shit about a gold medal winner because he "ALMOST" lost it for them.

They knew before he got in the pool that he was probably the slowest leg and he kept them close enough to win. Damn some people are negative.

I just saw a piece on Cullen Jones and Micheal Phelps on Extra the celebrity channel...it doesnt look like he's lacking any coverage to me. I had never heard Cullen speak, but they interviewed him and he seems like a very humble guy!

He stated that he's started these programs across the country to teach more minority kids to swim b/c he said that minority kids are 3 times more likely to die from drowning then white kids...so he apparently has like a couple of these programs across the country. It's nice to see a high profile athlete putting his money where his mouth is!

Keep up the good work Cullen and Team USA!!

It's actually like 25 points higher. see, if the media just did their job and let us know about the MLBs highest average, we'd all know these things.

seriously i thought this was about chipper.. carry on

yes, Cullen had the slowest time, but not by much, hell Phelps wasn't much faster and also didn't have the lead.

I think it was at least on the world record pace, remember they beat the world record by 4 full seconds.

Phelps got his 3rd gold, but it was so boring to watch compared to that relay. These 4 set the bar somewhere unreachable.

in a relay you have to consider time lost on the start...the USA coach was saying that you can't just compare the times straight up...either way, awesome race all around

i re-watched the video and laughed at that too. He looks like he's trying not to die, then he stands up to look at the times, lets out one "fuck yeah" probably, then collapses again.
