He was a stray my mother-in-law started taking care of, but couldn't keep. At some point, he has been abused So, two? Three? days after my husband said "NO MORE ANIMALS!", we came home with this fella.

He was just fine...once we got him in there. The only way we were able to get him to go in the car on his own was to put my MIL's (female) dog in there. He's not neutered yet Otherwise, we have to lift him in there, and then he's ALL over the place, looking for a way to get out. Once he realizes there's not one, he just sits down calmly in the back. He's going to be a good dog to take camping

I kind of assumed he was a mix, since
1) he's SO much smaller than a regular husky
2) he just looks different - more like a wolf (btw, he's black and white...with a red collar and harness GO PACK)
3) what you said, about who gives one up?

When we stopped at the shelter to have him scanned for a microchip, I asked their input on his mix, and they thought he was a purebred - ditto for the mobile groomer (open house at the shelter), who has owned multiple huskies.

I'll be asking at the vet.

If he is a full husky, my guess is that he was a runt?

A husky of any kind is not hte kind of breed I'd have ever pictured myself owning...not that that matters any more
--

He's super scared of cars. That would explain why we had such a hard time getting him into the car today. Took him for a walk after dinner, and when cars would approach, he started pulling and hauling ass off to the side of the road. It's a fear that served him well, though

PS: dog people
give me training pointers, and shit: my first dog never, ever got trained. He just lived in his yard, and was happy, and would pull my arm out whenever I took him on walks.

Then the second dog in my life ever is my husband's, who was mature, and very, very well-trained - to the point we think he may have been a show dog at some point.

So, by the time I recognized the importance and value of training a dog, my dog had lived with no training or manners for...ever.

This one craves attention so much I don't think it'll be overly difficult to train him...but I have no idea what one is supposed to train a dog to do. He's (hopefully) going to be an inside/outside dog, so housebreaking is a given.

I'd buy that. I've chalked up his flanking tendencies to the skittishness, and then the tendency to try to follow us (especially Z), to submissive behavior - but if he's a herding mix, that'd make perfect sense.

In case we were somehow unsure of whether he likes us:

He got out of the backyard (squeezed through a hole in the fencing on the gate)...

And went nowhere. Just sitting outside of it, waiting for us.

My German Shepard is a scared little bitch when he rides in a car, but he's not at all afraid of cars. He'll run up and try to sniff the wheels while I'm trying to move if he can get near the car.

My dog does that kind of shit all the time when he gets loose. He'll just walk over to a different part of the property that he normally can't get to and lay down and sleep. I think he went swimming and came back one day.

Penny and I are in advanced classes working towards canine good citizen certification. If you want to know where to start with your dog, I can loan you or let you copy the handouts from the beginner classes.

You start with targeting: getting the dog to follow a treat because you'll use that to lure the dog to start teaching things like watch, sit, down, belly, etc.

I came home to a note that said 'somehow, glacier got in our yard. he was playing, so I left him there. Maybe you'll be home when I get back from the dentist.'

I found the hole (aha! )

I'm almost of the opinion that maybe we should talk with the neighbors and see about connecting the two yards somehow. They've got a lab and a husky, and glacier is fiendin' hard for a playmate. Yall should see him try to get the 15+ yr old homo dog my husband's decrepit cocker spaniel to play.
