Here is a fun fact that leads into a question:

Toy Story, as a trilogy now and not just the first film, constantly and intentionally uses and combines themes and nostalgia from both Star Wars and Star Trek into each of the films. Pretty freaky, right?

So, are there any other examples of this out there? Usually people are too afraid to mix the two because that is a faux-pas, but are there any other examples that I am not aware of?

Man, I never liked that movie, and it always fucks me in the ass when it comes to trivia because I just don't like that type of humor.

Spaceballs is probably Mel Brooks' worst movie, with some of the best jokes. There is some pure gold in between all the absolute shit.

i married a girl whose family members are all trekkies (trekkers even?) and go to the convention in Las Vegas most years.

So my wife and i were walking around the convention a couple years ago and i saw a Gene Roddenberry poster and i was like "Who the fuck is Gene Roddenberry?!" (i was a little hangry) and like a dozen people snapped their heads to look at me and my wife almost passed out.

I've learned a lot about Star Trek since then, let me tell ya.

been watching DS9 on Netflix, and i'm coming to realize how much better TNG was. I'm on Season 5 of DS9 and the writing/acting is nowhere near TNG level.

It has always been explained to me that DS9 had the superior crew, Sisko was the better Captain, and the Defiant makes the NCC-1701D look like a big fat galactic commune with warp nacelles and a phaser.

I want to know how everyone in starfleet seems to have unlimited Latinum to spend at quarks, etc., when earth has no currency and the federation doesn't pay salaries.

Is the 2nd season premiere the worst episode in the series (where Troi gets knocked up by a tiny ball of light)?

If not, I don't think I can go through with my plan to rewatcg all of TNG any more.

Well the age old internet question about the holodeck is if you bang a hologram and cum inside, when you end the program does your jizz just drop to the floor of the holodeck? Or can it de materialize it along with the photons. If not, is their a jizz mopper job on the enterprise or are you expected to clean up after yourself?

I think Quark actually pimped out his holosuite for this. There was an episode where he was trying to sell an erotic adventure with one of the officers and got caught.

So I confess to knowing next to nothing about Star Trek, outside of a few episodes of The Next Generation that our Philosophy teacher used to show us (and which did, I confess, sometimes cover some excellent points)

But I've never quite understood the point of all the exploration that these guys are doing.

Like...the Earth doesn't really have an economy. They have machines that can create whatever they want. So they don't need to explore to find resources, as best I can tell.

The Federation doesn't seem to be out looking for things to conquer, so they're not doing recon.

And as I understand the Prime Directive, they're not allowed to interfere with the civilizations they find, so it's not like they're trying to spread technology and civilization.

So are they just flying around to look at stuff? Someone help me out. No doubt this is explained at some point, I just never caught it.

I have a question. In Star Trek into Darkness, the Enterprise is being chased, in a warp, by another Federation ship (Dreadnaught?). The bigger federation ship shoots several holes in the Enterprise while warping. And we see bodies fly out of the holes, as if they were flying from an airplane.

Is this a plot hole? How were those bodies not instantly vaporaized?

Don't answer questions about JJ Abrams Star Trek because it is awful.

GrumpyGOP i think they explore because it's a basic human trait. People have been exploring for a long time. Also the show would be pretty boring if they just replicated everything.

I don't know, seems getting ejected at warp speed might be problematic.

I guess since there's no atmosphere, it wouldn't matter.

Well, sure, but the Federation isn't 100% human. And basic though the trait may be, I can't see forming a vast military apparatus to pursue it.

I get that they need to explore for the show to be worth watching, I just want to know the in-universe explanation.

They're being ejected at warp speed, but they still have the momentum of warp speed. As soon as they get thrown from the ship, they basically drop out of subspace as soon as the ship is farther away all while dying of being exposed to vacuum.

But yeah, Abramsverse was terrible in general with the SCIENCE part of Sci-Fi. Things like magic blood, infinite range transporters, etc

^^^

Deep space nine goes into that in depth.

The stated reason really is exploration and first contact with other warp capable species. It's the "continuing mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and civilization".

But exploration is inherently risky and conflict prone. If you're going to explore, and you bump into a hornets nest, you'll need to defend yourself.

So in the federation, the politicians are all about peace. But there are still secretive, black ops, shadow organizations funneling resources to keep a military edge or trying to influence policy to be more militant, and it's up to the virtuous characters to decide when they've crossed the line and reel them in, or to just shut them down completely.
