RALEIGH -- On Sunday night, someone sneaked into Jim Cayton's home and swiped his video gaming systems, television and computer.
Not five feet away, Stella, Cayton's brown-and-white whippet confined to a crate, likely whined to come out and play.
She died there, inhaling smoke from a fire that erupted soon after the robbery. Cayton blames the robbers, thinking they torched his rental home to cover the tracks of their robbery.
Raleigh police are investigating the fire. Firefighters initially blamed it on a faulty electrical outlet in the bedroom.
Cayton is convinced that the intruders left his dog to die.
"With a flick of a wrist, they could have let her loose," Cayton said. "Why didn't they give Stella a fighting chance?"
Cayton thinks someone watched him leave his West Raleigh home on Kaplan Drive just after 7p.m. He'd gone over to a buddy's house to play cards. An hour later, his landlord called his cell phone to alert him that the house was in flames. Cayton rushed home, hoping that somehow, some way, Stella had broken free.
"That was the longest 10-minute drive of my life," Cayton said.
By the time Cayton arrived, firetrucks and police cars lined his street. He pulled his car onto a curb and raced toward the house. Firefighters had pulled Stella's crate from the house. She was already dead, likely killed from smoke inhalation. Firefighters covered her cage with a blanket, and Cayton's brother drove her to their native New Bern to bury her beside another family pet.
When firefighters gave Cayton the OK to go inside the house, he immediately noticed something amiss.
Where his entertainment center once stood, nothing but a tangle of cords remained. Even the cable box and remote were gone.
The timing seemed too coincidental to Cayton.
"It's really perplexing otherwise," he said. "It all happened in an hour."
Cayton is visiting his parents in New Bern, where he lived before moving to Raleigh to attend N.C. State University. He is picking up new clothes and household items. He is already thinking of adopting a rescue dog to help him cope with the loss of Stella.
Friends and coworkers at the State Employees Credit Union have offered him dishes and clothes and a place to stay.
Within a week, Cayton says, he has witnessed both the worst in people and the best.

I am pretty sure this house is in my neighborhood, there is a burned one right at the corner of Kent and Kaplan. I did not know the fire was following a burglary. 1/8/2010 9:28:04 AM
