I'm curious to see how stuff like that holds up over the years. That sort of style is more and more popular, but i've read that some tattoo artists don't like it because it won't hold together right over time.

That being said, I'm not a tattoo artist. So I don't know. But I like that style too and have read about that concern some in tattoo magazines, so I'm a little weary.

it has to do with the amount of blacks/darks. From what I've read and talked to tattoo artists about, those dark, heavy lines are important for reasons I don't entirely understand. The gist of it that I've gathered is that the ink sort of spreads out over the years, and that the dark borders (it doesn't necessarily have to be traditional line-work) keep the colors together.

And that may not matter as much in this style because the colors all blend together and are not meant to be tightly contained within the outline. I would just look into it, talk to people etc, before diving right in.


But I love the style and coloring. Do a google image search for "ondrash", I think you'll like his work too.

I mean that doesn't sound like a big deal to me. before I saw this tattoo it's kind of how I wanted my future one to look like. I'm calling it a watercolor pen style, b/c thats what it reminds me of. Idk what it's actually called but.... whatever. I'm hoping the girl I'm seeing will be able to grasp the image I have in my head of what I want. Showing her this style might at least help communicate that.

I'll talk to her about it and see what she says

yeah, it looks like watercolor over an ink drawing.

And I agree that if that is the reasoning, then it's not too big of a deal with this style. It's far more important for tattoo that have a more solid outline.

But yeah, I would just talk to a few different tattoo artists about it and see what they say. I'd also try to find someone who has worked in that style to some extent. Not all tattoo artists (or artists period) can easily work in any style. The professional artists will be up front about it and may even recommend someone else. But worst case scenario, someone says "yeah, I can do that" and then they don't pull it off.

yea true that. I have an appointment with lacie at phoenix in july and she's really good (i know a bunch of people who've had her work on them) but I didn't really see this style in her portfolio. I'll see what she says and if she recommends someone else.

the tattoo is Maya's name and the three stars represent Orion like the belt. I have to do something that represents joel. I might do a nebula for him.
