the "blue eyed" bad guys in the northern forest on that trailer weren't like I had imagined from reading the books... the rest looks great though

I'm pretty excited about the happenings on the Wall. the Jon Snow arc was my favorite one to read, pretty badass shit going on there when the rest of the kingdom was bitching about the throne.

did anyone else imagine the blue eyed beings to look more like burnes when he was radioactive and on pain pills wondering through the forest of springfield than what they portrayed in the show?

Spoiler Alert

Don't know if this has been posted or not:

http://www.salon.com/entertainment/tv/feature/2011/04/09/game_of_thrones_primer/index.html

Good guide if you've already read the books and want to catch back up without re-reading them.

I imagined the white walkers looking kind of like the movie version of Voldemort but with blue eyes and even paler/less human.

And BTW that was never how I pictured Voldemort.

Voldermort would've been a lot more scary looking if they weren't catering to a PG audience

I'm talking super scary, like a pig snout for a nose and human assholes for eyes

I imagined them having deader eyes, not just blue contacts... more like the bodies in the dead marshes in lotr, just with a blue tint instead of white

Quote :
"HBO put the "It's not TV. It's HBO." slogan into semi-retirement a couple of years ago. It had been around for nearly 13 years, and it was taken out of circulation (or occasionally shortened to just "It's HBO.") during a fallow creative period for the pay cable giant, when it was very hard to argue that the post-"Sopranos" version of HBO was really any different from any other channel.

But at HBO's early '00s creative peak, the slogan wasn't pretentious, but uncannily accurate. Shows like "The Sopranos," "The Wire" and "Deadwood" took stories and worlds that audiences knew to death and made them into something more - something grander in ambition, something richer in execution, something guaranteed to stick with you far longer than previous TV versions of that story had. "The Wire" was a cop show, and "Deadwood" a Western, but both were so much more.

The slogan's gone, but HBO has been mounting a comeback over the last year thanks to new blood like "Treme" and "Boardwalk Empire." Now comes "Game of Thrones" (it debuts Sunday night at 9), the expensive adaptation of George R.R. Martin's fantasy novel series "A Song of Ice and Fire," which is trying to do for the fantasy genre what the classic HBO dramas did for cops, cowboys and wiseguys.

And for the most part, it works - stunningly well. "

good link. I actually just finished reading that a few minutes ago. I'm interested to gauge the reactions here after the first few episodes. Mainly I'll be interested to see difference in opinion from readers of the series vs non-readers. I know the non-readers posting here are fewer in number but I know there are a couple.

Heard good things about this series, books 1-4 are on the way. Should I read all 4 before I watch or are they only focusing on the first book?

The scope of season 1 = book 1. The scope of the entire show (should it run the full course) is to cover ~1 book per season. (ie season 2 = book 2, season 3 = book 3). Realistically there will be some overlapping or an extra season or two being added or some brushing over/cutting out of certain aspects as needed due to the long narrative to complete it that way though. Who knows if they'll get that far though. One can hope.

The name of the show is confusing since it shares its name with the first book, but that was just a change of style (and a good one) to downplay the fantasy and promote the political aspect.

Seriously though, are they going to change the name of the show every season? Or will it be like multiple "separate" miniseries?

How can you say it has nothing to do with the plot? Stating how an episode starts, especially when it involves two characters interacting with one another in a certain way, sure as hell gives away the plot.

HBO has put up an interactive map (you have to zoom all the way in to interact with the cities) as well as a guide to the different major houses so far:

Jesus christ, ads for this are blowing up everywhere. They certainly aren't taking the Fox approach to handling nerd shows.

How does HBO even determine whether a show is profitable or worth renewing?

yeah check out deadwood if you think hbo dumbs anything down, I'd argue deadwood was actually more violent and evil than most of the movie westerns
