Post here when you almost wreck in the Hillsborough St./campus area roundabouts
I was in the circle going straight onto oberlin, guy on Hillsborough didn't even stop and almost creamed me.
This thread will blow up when they make the roundabouts 2 lanes. 6/14/2010 5:12:41 PM |

I didn't think it'd ever be a big deal until I heard about the 2 lane traffic circles. That sounds ridiculous. 6/14/2010 5:16:27 PM |

Sorry, but the whole idea of a two lane traffic circle seems a lil counter intuitive. Everyone gets in it, is going the same direction. It seems the only point of an inner lane would be to get in the traffic circle, then drive around in it while you're trying to figure out where to get out? Someone, please. Explain this. 6/14/2010 5:28:32 PM |

in large traffic circles if part of the outside lane is blocked off by a backup at one exit you can pass them to get to the next. also if the traffic circle is around a destination of some sort there are usually parking spots on the inside rim and the inside lane is for them to get in and out. 6/14/2010 5:31:21 PM |

Also, in multiple lane roundabouts(not traffic circles, traffic circles are obsolete and only seen in rural towns) sometimes the outer lanes are designated as turn lanes. You would stay in the left lane if you want to go straight through the roundabout and come out on the other side(or you could continue on around and make a left or u-turn from the left lane)
It's pretty simple really:

so what keeps that car that's turning out of the roundabout from the inside lane from causing a wreck when he crosses the outside lane? 6/14/2010 5:56:17 PM |

They are the bus/truck curtain. Not for pedestrians.

The right lane can only go right. It's like a free-flow right turn lane. The left lane can all the way around the circle and you exit where ever. It's that easy.

those are made specifically for exposing yourself to motorists, the logic being that it both provides a better view for the drivers as well as making it more difficult for the arresting officers to reach you6/14/2010 10:07:20 PM |

Traffic circles should not be confused with roundabouts, in which entering traffic must always yield to traffic already in the circle, and generally operate at much lower speeds.
the pinehurst one is a traffic circle.
the 2?3? near ncsu are roundabouts, there is one in durham that is very well placed it handles the left handed turning traffic really well. 6/14/2010 10:34:33 PM |

I disagree. Roundabouts > traffic lights anyday. They keep traffic moving, and people will figure them out. 7/19/2010 8:43:17 AM |
