If wins are being vacated from 08-09, then why not stats?

I *think* they are referring only to their internal school records. Of course they want their 'all time receiving/passing/whatever' stats to be as high as possible. I don't care what they do with their own records.

Should they put an asterisk on Yates UNC yards record too? He was throwing to ineligible players, and hell he might have been in AFAM himself

"Finally, Tom Ross, president of the UNC system, should not tolerate the kind of games the university is playing with what should be public records, and he may well have to intervene to make that point clear to UNC-CH administrators.

I'd love to see Tom Ross lay down the law, but I'm not holding my breath that a UNC Law School grad will step in and shake things up.

From another article:

Quote :
"UNC President Tom Ross said Friday that the UNC system and UNC-CH have been transparent in disclosing the details of academic fraud.

He defended the decision to create the four-person board committee to oversee the university’s investigation instead of bringing in an outside group. An outside group isn’t needed since the State Bureau of Investigation is doing its own criminal investigation, Ross said.

“We have brought in a third party called the SBI, and they’re doing an independent investigation right now, and their practice is such that we don’t want to interfere,” he said. “I don’t think they want another investigation going on.”

The board committee will meet next week to review its charge and will begin work soon, Ross said. He said he didn’t know when the committee’s report might be released.

“[They’re] going to look at everything that’s been done to assure our board and assure the public that everything that needs to be done has been done.”"

Sounds more like a whitewash to me. He's already made up his mind and he just wants this to go away. Move along folks, nothing to see here.

great comment on N&O article

Hakeem Nicks is the UNC player that scored a 10 or 11 on the NFL's Wonderlic test, which menas he is barely literate, but somehow he managed to get through 3 years at UNC. We now know how all these UNC guys like that, and there were many others of questionable intelligence, were able to stay eligible enough to play. UNC clearly put a system in place to shuffle these guys through and keep them "eligible". The question now is who put this system in place and how many people knew about it. It is clear the players knew about it because Marvin Austin signed up for one of the 400 level classes as his first class ever at UNC. Clearly someone steered him into that class. Was it a tutor, a coach, or an administrator? More evidence that it was a known cheating system and that higher ups were organizing it is the fact that some of the classes were added a few days prior to class beginning and then all the sudden it fills up in a day with all football players. Obviously someone was directing those players to go to that class and more than likely set the class up for them to go register for it. Who was behind that? It is obvious that UNC had an institutional cheating system and operated it for years so that they would have an advantage against all their peers on the football field and basketball court and make huge dollars for their athletic department. This broad cheating from agents to academic fraud on the institutional level is far worse than anything college athletics has seen before...way worse than UNLV and that is saying something. Thorpe needs to be fired. He has totally stonewalled and tried to sweep the facts under the rug. Who is he protecting and why should he protect the individuals that were clearly cheating? Maybe he was part of it? There needs to be a thorough independent investigation to shine the light on this massive fraud that has tarnished UNC and the entire state. The public deserves to know who was involved so that we know the system has been purged and all the cheaters are fired and flushed out of the UNC system. Afterall, we pay the salaries of all these professors and administrators like Holden Thorpe, Julius Ngaroo, etc., etc. and we don't appreciate the lack of transparency. Just like Penn State tried to cover up their transgressions, UNC is trying to cover up their cheating and academic fraud scandal. Who else was involved in the cheating? Who else knew about it? How high did the scandal go? There's obviously a reason UNC is stonewalling and fighting so hard.

I think it is pretty clear at this point that basketball is implicated. I find it hard to believe UNC would go to this trouble to establish and protect this system just for a shitty football team.

"This is a head fake, designed to fool and distract us. The real problem at UNC is it has become a leftist hotbed where kids come in, ready to learn and enjoy the college experience, and are sent out as budding communists. The N&O loves this aspect of UNC and sees sports as taking resources from this main mission.

There is no way this doesnt stretch all the way to basketball.

If anything it appears that this system was in place strictly for basketball and in the past regime Butch found out about it and started to exploit it with football players.

I wouldnt mind seeing a list of players who left UNC early and if any of them took these classes strictly or had a majority of these classes on their schedule.

that would mean they didnt even go to class, just there for basketball.

I feel like this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Not all of them, but half the roster had AFAM as a major. Some of them switched late, like Sean Mays, who switched from communications and specifically stated in an Indiana paper because he didn't have to go to class as much.

I haven't seen this posted anywhere here, but thought you guys might appreciate this tidbit from The Daily Tarheel's write up on the hearing yesterday.

Quote :
"Jon Sasser, an attorney representing former football coach Butch Davis, spoke first, arguing that the subpoena for Davis’ personal phone records should be dismissed. He said it was questionable whether Davis should be considered a public official and that the records contained no content.
Sasser also said the release of Davis’ phone records would make him vulnerable to public ridicule from fans of N.C. State University."

"And there is the ongoing academic stink at North Carolina, where even amid the NCAA investigation last year football players were being herded into no-show summer classes. Sources told Yahoo! Sports last week that the NCAA has said to UNC it will not revisit the most recent revelations of academic misconduct, labeling them a university issue and not an NCAA issue. But that was before the Penn State ruling.
If president Mark Emmert was able to ignore the rules manual and standard enforcement protocol in the Penn State case, might he be tempted to cowboy up on a school that seems to be exhibiting persistent academic fraud?"

There is precedent. Michigan had a similar situation where one professor had taught like 300 independent study classes over a 3 year period, with the vast majority being athletes. The "classes" were obviously a joke, and athletes were getting steered into them by academic advisors. Because the classes were technically available for other students, the NCAA called it an "academic issue" and gave them a slap on the wrist.

"Was Nyang'oro in Africa during last summer's no-show class at UNC?

The first clue of no-show classes at UNC-Chapel Hill came when rival N.C. State fans in early July 2011 found plagiarism in a Swahili paper by a former football player. The paper listed Julius Nyang'oro as the professor.
We thought it was newsworthy, and sought to find Nyang'oro for a story we published on the Swahili paper on July 17. We contacted his office and the department, and ultimately, we got this emailed comment from Kim Weaver Spurr, who is a spokeswoman for the College of Arts and Sciences:
"He is traveling in Africa right now. His unc email account is the best way to reach him while he is traveling."
The date of the email is July 14.
